Foreign visitors will need cover of at least <strong>US$50,000<\/strong> from a Kenya-licensed insurer. The start date and how proof will be checked have <strong>not yet been announced<\/strong> \u2014 your currently planned trip is not affected today, and we are monitoring official guidance daily.\n<\/div>\n<h2>What exactly has Kenya announced?<\/h2>\n<p>Through <strong>Gazette Notice No. 11492<\/strong>, published in a Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette on 30 July 2026 and signed by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Kenya has set out the minimum policy benefits for <em>mandatory inbound travel health insurance<\/em>. How foreign policies will be treated is one of the questions awaiting official clarification.<\/p>\n<h2>Who does this apply to?<\/h2>\n<p>The underlying law covers <strong>non-Kenyan nationals visiting Kenya for less than 12 months<\/strong>. The gazette notice itself does not list exemptions (for example for East African Community citizens or foreign residents), so we expect further guidance to spell this out.<\/p>\n<h2>What we don’t know yet \u2014 honestly<\/h2>\n<p>As of early August 2026, three big questions remain open, and any article that claims to answer them is guessing:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. When it starts.<\/strong> Authorities have not announced when insurance checks will begin.<br \/>\n<strong>2. How it will be verified.<\/strong> The official Kenya eTA portal does not yet list proof of insurance among its required documents, so it is unclear whether you’ll show proof at eTA application, at boarding, or on arrival.<br \/>\n<strong>3. What it will cost.<\/strong> No official pricing has been published. Kenya’s tourism industry has publicly urged the government to keep the requirement affordable so Kenya stays competitive as a destination.<\/p>\n<div class=\"note\"><strong>Our advice while we wait:<\/strong> don’t panic and don’t buy anything yet specifically for this rule. If you’re travelling soon, carry the comprehensive travel insurance you’d normally take on safari or a trek \u2014 most good policies already exceed several of these limits. We will update this article the moment the start date or verification process is announced.<\/div>\n<h2>What does it mean for your safari or Mount Kenya trek?<\/h2>\n<p>For most adventure travellers, very little changes in practice. If you’re climbing Mount Kenya, walking the tea farms of Tigoni, or heading into the Masai Mara with us, you should be travelling with medical and evacuation cover anyway \u2014 it has always been our strong recommendation, and for high-altitude treks it’s essential. The new rule mainly formalises, at a national level, what responsible travellers already do.
