How to get there?
You can use public means of transport from Nairobi by boarding Matatu bus station at Nyamakima area, off River Road. Make sure to board the ones using Old Naivasha Road. Mount National Park Gate is about 4km to the left.
you also hire a taxi to take you there or join group events, these trips usually factor in every element of the trip and they are cheaper since the cost is shared among participants.
do you need a guide to climb mount Longonot?
Yes and No.
If it is your first time to hike up Mount Longonot or rather if you are new to Kenya I would recommend a guide. At the entrance there is a club of Community guides which is approved by the custodian of Mount Longonot; the Kenya Wildlife Service. The community guides have information and knowledge about this area and the surrounding hence if keen on information they have much of that. The service is also a source of livelihood to these local guides, hiring them will be empowering them to secure their daily bread.
Mount Longonot is a well-marked path, from the entrance all the way up following the trail and you will make it to the rim of the crater. At the rim, you can take right or left, either will lead you to the summit and bring you back to the rim, where you descend down back to the starting point. additionally, the entry point is also the exit point
