The Madaraka Express SGR changes the calculation entirely. Instead of 4 to 5 hours on the A104 highway, you board at Nairobi Terminus and arrive at Voi in approximately 2.5 hours. The train crosses the Tsavo River on elevated bridges — elephants are regularly visible from the carriage on this section. Our vehicle collects you at Voi Station and drives you directly to your lodge.

This is the most comfortable way to reach Tsavo. It is also the fastest. And it leaves the Madaraka Day long weekend with maximum time inside the reserve rather than on the road.

Madaraka Day - What It Actually Means

On June 1, 1963, Kenya achieved internal self-governance — Madaraka, meaning self-rule in Swahili — while still technically a British territory. Independence came six months later on December 12. But June 1 was the day Kenyans took the wheel. It was the moment everything changed.

Spending this specific weekend inside Tsavo — Kenya's largest national park system, a landscape that played a role in the colonial-era railway story that defined the country's modern history — gives the 3-day Madaraka holiday safari a layer of meaning that a beach trip or city break cannot match.

The Uganda Railway that brought the British into the interior, and whose construction was famously disrupted by the man-eating lions of Tsavo in 1898, runs alongside the modern SGR track that now carries you here in comfort. Madaraka Express SGR operates the Nairobi–Mombasa route with stops at Mtito Andei and Voi. For this safari, you board at Nairobi Terminus (near Syokimau) and alight at Voi Station.

Itinerary - Day by Day 🗓️

Day 1 - Friday, May 29: Nairobi to Tsavo · First Game Drive

Morning — Board the Madaraka Express

Depart Nairobi Terminus, Syokimau. Settle in for a comfortable 2.5-hour ride through the Athi Plains, Kibwezi Forest, and the Tsavo scrubland. The train crosses the Tsavo River at elevation — keep your camera ready.

Voi Station arrival — Wild Springs vehicle is waiting. Transfer to your lodge (30 to 60 minutes depending on property). Lunch at the lodge. Check in. The lodge pool is open.

Afternoon game drive — 16:00 to 18:30

First entry into the reserve. Tsavo East's signature colours arrive immediately: the red laterite soil, the red-dust elephants that wade and dust-bathe in it, the Galana River with its hippo pods and Nile crocodile sandbanks. The maneless Tsavo male lions — genetically distinct from other Kenya populations — are most active in the late afternoon. Your guide has the current sighting intelligence.

Welcome drink at the lodge on return. Full-board dinner. Overnight.

Day 2 - Saturday, May 30: Full Day Tsavo · Mzima Springs or Mudanda Rock

05:45 — Dawn game drive

The finest game drive window of the safari. Tsavo East's enormous elephant herds — including family groups of 30 to 50 animals — descend to the Galana River at dawn. Cheetah are active on the open plains. The Maneless lion prides are finishing overnight movements. Your guide positions the vehicle before first light.

Mid-morning options (choose based on your lodge location):

If in Tsavo West: Mzima Springs — 227 million litres of crystal-clear fresh water emerging daily from a Kilimanjaro aquifer, with an underwater viewing chamber where you observe hippos through thick glass at waterline level. Nothing else in Kenya compares.

If in Tsavo East, Mudanda Rock is a 1.5km metamorphic inselberg with a natural elephant waterhole below it that concentrates wildlife throughout the year. Viewpoints allow vehicle exit at the rock face.

Midday — return to lodge. Pool, lunch, rest. The Tsavo midday heat is real.

Afternoon game drive — 15:30 to 18:30

An extended circuit through the reserve. The Yatta Plateau — the world's longest lava flow at approximately 290km — stretches along the northern boundary. Lugard Falls, where the Galana River narrows through volcanic rock. The light in the late afternoon on Tsavo is among the most photographic in Kenya.

Full-board dinner. Overnight.

Tsavo - The Park Behind the Safari 🐘

Tsavo is not one park. It is two — Tsavo East (13,747 km²) and Tsavo West (~9,000 km²) — separated by the Nairobi-Mombasa A109 highway. Together they form one of the largest protected wildlife areas on Earth. Your lodge determines which side you base from, and both have access to the other via the Manyani Gate crossing.

The red elephants are the defining Tsavo image. The iron-rich red laterite soil is the reason — the elephants dust-bathe in it as sunscreen and insect repellent. Every Tsavo photograph is immediately identifiable by this colour.

The maneless Tsavo lion is genetically distinct. Research suggests the combination of heat, thorny vegetation, and territorial ecology explains the reduced mane. A Tsavo male lion looks different from anything you will see in the Masai Mara or Amboseli.

The man-eaters — in 1898, two man-eating male lions disrupted construction of the Uganda Railway by killing workers over nine months. Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson eventually shot both. Their mounted skins are now at the Field Museum in Chicago. Their descendants still patrol this territory. Your guide knows where the current prides range.

Are park fees included in the price?

No. Tsavo East and Tsavo West park entry fees are paid separately at the gate using M-Pesa, Visa, or Mastercard. The 2026 non-resident rate is $80 per adult per 24 hours per park. Which park do I visit — Tsavo East or West?

Your lodge determines the primary circuit. Man Eaters Camp and Voi Wildlife Lodge are in Tsavo East. Salt Lick Safari Lodge and Taita Hills Safari Resort are adjacent to Tsavo West in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. Full-day circuits can cross between both parks via Manyani Gate — your guide plans according to your lodge position.

What is the man-eaters' story, and is it connected to this safari?

In 1898, two maneless male lions killed railway workers over nine months during the construction of the Uganda Railway through the Tsavo area. They were shot by Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson and are now at the Field Museum in Chicago. Man Eaters Camp is named after them and is built near their original territory. Their descendants — still maneless, still Tsavo — are the lions your guide tracks on the game drive circuits today.

Can I see the Mzima Springs underwater hippo viewing on this safari?

Yes, if you are lodging on the Tsavo West side (Salt Lick or Taita Hills). Mzima Springs in Tsavo West produces 227 million litres of fresh water daily from a Kilimanjaro aquifer and has a submerged viewing chamber where you observe hippos at waterline through thick glass. If your lodge is in Tsavo East, this can be included on the Day 2 circuit via the Manyani Gate crossing — advise us at booking.

Is this safari suitable for families?

Yes. The SGR train makes the journey genuinely comfortable for children. The lodge pool, fixed-position game drive vehicle, and wildlife sighting consistency of Tsavo East all work well for families. Children under 5 travel free. Children 5 to 17 pay half the non-resident park fee.

What if I cannot get a Madaraka Day SGR train ticket?

We can arrange private road transfer from Nairobi to Voi as an alternative. The road journey is approximately 4 to 5 hours. Contact us and we provide a road transfer quote as an add-on. The package price remains the same — the road transfer replaces the train independently.

Can I extend the safari beyond 3 days?

Yes. Additional nights at your chosen lodge can be arranged. Each extra day of game drives and accommodation is priced separately. Contact us with your preferred extension at booking.
