Mount Kenya Climbing Cost - 2026 & 2027 Price Guide
Everything it costs to climb Mount Kenya to Point Lenana (4,985 m) with a licensed local operator - full per-person prices in US Dollars and Kenya Shillings, for 2-day up to 6-day treks on the Sirimon and Chogoria routes. All KWS park fees and government taxes are already included. Bookings for both the 2026 and 2027 seasons are open now.
How much does it cost to climb Mount Kenya? A guided Point Lenana climb costs from about US$430 per person on a budget public-transport trek, and up to US$1,200 for a fully private 6-day expedition with your own guide, cook and crew. Kenyan residents pay from about KES 25,000 per person. Every price already includes KWS park fees and government taxes. Your final figure depends on the route, the number of days, your group size, and whether you choose a private, group-joining or public-transport departure.

"solo" is one climber travelling alone. "pp 2+" is the price per person when two or more climb together. Group Joining is per person on a shared departure date and includes private, comfortable transport (not public matatu).

Prices are reviewed once a year and are tied to government taxes: if those taxes rise we adjust accordingly, and if they fall we revise our prices down. Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) park fees
KWS is the official custodian of Mount Kenya, and everyone entering the National Park pays a daily conservation fee. On our packages these fees are already included in your price - the table below is simply for your information (October 2025 rates).

Best time to climb Mount Kenya
You can climb Mount Kenya all year round, and our prices stay the same across every season. For the clearest skies, driest trails and best summit views, the two prime windows are January to early March and June to October. The wetter months still summit well with the right gear, and are quieter on the trail.
Gear you need, and hiring it
Group camping equipment is always provided. For your personal kit - boots, a warm sleeping bag, an insulated jacket, waterproofs, a headlamp and trekking poles - you do not need to buy expensive gear for a single climb. Wild Springs runs its own outdoor gear shop in Nairobi, so you can hire quality equipment and pick it up in one place before you set off. Ask us for the current hire list when you book.
Tipping your mountain crew
Tips are not included and are entirely at your discretion, but they are customary and hugely appreciated by the guides, cooks and porters who make your climb possible. As a rough guideline, many climbers budget around US$10 to US$15 per climber per day for the whole crew, pooled and shared at the end of the trek. Give what feels right for the service you receive.
What makes the price go up or down

Group size. The more people share the guide, cook, crew and vehicle, the lower the per-person price. A solo private climb is the most expensive per head; 2 or more climbers drop the rate immediately.

Number of days. Each extra day adds guiding, food, camping and park fees, but also better acclimatisation and a higher summit success rate. The 5-day is the sweet spot of cost versus success.

Route. Sirimon is the most economical; the scenic Chogoria and the Chogoria-Sirimon traverse cost a little more for the extra logistics and transfers.

Private vs. Group Joining vs. Public Transport. This is the biggest single lever - a private guaranteed departure with Nairobi transfers costs more than joining a set-date group or taking public transport to the base town.

Gear you already own. Bring your own boots, sleeping bag and layers and you save on hire. We rent quality gear from our Nairobi outdoor shop if you need it.

What is the difference between the Private, Group Joining and Public Transport prices?
Private gives you your own guide, cook and crew, a guaranteed departure even solo, and private transfers from Nairobi. Group Joining is cheaper, you share the trek and vehicle with other climbers on a set date. Public Transport is the most affordable, you take a matatu to the base town and guiding, meals and camping begin there.
Are KWS park fees included in the price?
Yes. All KWS conservation fees for the full trek, plus government taxes, the new gateway fee, park access fee and convenience fees, are already built into our Private and Group Joining package prices, so there are no surprises at the gate.
Which route is best, Sirimon or Chogoria?
Chogoria is the most scenic, with waterfalls, gorges and tarns, usually done as a Chogoria-up, Sirimon-down traverse over 4 to 5 days. Sirimon is drier, gentler and the most cost-effective for a 3 to 4-day climb. For the best acclimatisation and highest summit success we recommend the 5-day Chogoria-Sirimon traverse.
Can you climb Mount Kenya in 2 days?
Yes, a 2-day 1-night dash to Point Lenana on the Sirimon route is possible, but it is a hard, fast ascent with little acclimatisation, so it suits fit climbers already used to altitude. For most people a 4 or 5-day itinerary is far more comfortable and much more likely to summit.
When is the best time to climb Mount Kenya?
You can climb all year and our price stays the same across seasons. The driest, clearest windows are January to early March and June to October, which give the best trail conditions and summit views.
Do I need my own gear, or can I hire it?
You can hire everything from our own outdoor gear shop in Nairobi, from boots and sleeping bags to insulated jackets and trekking poles, so you do not have to buy costly kit for one climb. Group camping equipment is always provided.
