The Lodge That No Other Kenya Safari Has
Salt Lick Safari Lodge is built on stilts. Not metaphorically - literally on concrete legs above a permanent floodlit waterhole in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. At night, after dinner, you walk along the elevated walkways that connect the rondavel rooms above the bush and look down. Below you, in the floodlight, the animals come.
Elephant families. Buffalo herds. Warthog. Waterbuck. Occasionally, a lion.
This happens because the waterhole is the only permanent water for a significant radius. Everything that lives in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary comes to it. The lodge was designed around that single fact. You are positioned directly above the point of maximum wildlife activity, at night, in a landscape that almost nobody on the Nairobi social calendar has ever visited.
This is the Madaraka Day long weekend getaway that requires explanation to every friend who asks where you are going — and becomes the story you are still telling six months later.
Why the Madaraka Day Long Weekend 2026
June 1 is Madaraka Day - Kenya's internal self-governance holiday, marking June 1, 1963. It is a public holiday. Combined with the Friday and weekend before, the Madaraka Day long weekend 2026 gives you three nights away from Nairobi on what is otherwise a standard work week.
Most Nairobi residents spend it on the Mombasa road. You board the Madaraka Express SGR at Nairobi Terminus and arrive at Voi in approximately 2.5 hours. Our vehicle is waiting. You are at Salt Lick or Taita Hills Lodge in time for lunch, a game drive, and a sundowner above the waterhole — all before most of your colleagues have cleared the Mlolongo traffic.

The Two Lodges - Choose Your Experience
🦁 Salt Lick Safari Lodge - Built Over a Waterhole
Salt Lick Safari Lodge sits within the private Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary - a 28,000-acre private conservancy managed by Sarova Hotels adjacent to the Tsavo West ecosystem. The sanctuary functions as a wildlife corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West, meaning animals move freely through it.
The lodge itself is the feature. Nineteen rondavel rooms on stilts, connected by elevated walkways, positioned directly above the most active waterhole in the sanctuary. Two room types:
Waterhole Rooms - directly overlooking the main waterhole. Floor-to-ceiling windows. The animals are below you. At night, the floodlights illuminate everything. This is the specific reason people book Salt Lick.
Park View Rooms - overlook the surrounding bushland rather than the waterhole directly. Lower rate, same lodge facilities.
No children under 5 are permitted at Salt Lick Safari Lodge — Sarova group child safety policy.
🌿 Taita Hills Safari Resort — The Gateway Lodge
Taita Hills Safari Resort sits at the sanctuary entrance, adjacent to the Taita Hills forest zone. More accessible for families with younger children. The resort uses the same game drive circuits as Salt Lick and has a full pool, restaurant, and conference facilities.
WWI Taita Hills Museum - a Heritage Tour of the World War One battlefield at the Taita Hills is included free in your package. The Battle of Salaita Hill, January 1916 — one of the first major East African campaign engagements - was fought on the slopes of the hills surrounding this resort. The museum context gives the Taita Hills a historical depth that most Kenya safari destinations cannot match.

Itinerary - Day by Day 🗓️
Day 1 - Friday, May 29: Board the SGR · Arrive Taita Hills · First Game Drive
Morning - Nairobi Terminus, Syokimau
Board the Madaraka Express from Nairobi Terminus at 08:00. The train arrives at Voi Station at approximately 12:05 PM. Our vehicle is waiting at the platform - no fumbling for transport at an unfamiliar station.
The transfer from Voi to the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is itself a game drive en-route. You enter the Tsavo ecosystem from Voi, and the vehicle moves through the corridor. Red elephants, Maasai giraffe, and plains zebra are regularly visible on the 45-minute drive to the lodge.
Lunch at the lodge. Check in. If you have chosen Salt Lick, walk the elevated boardwalk before your first game drive and identify your waterhole animals.
Afternoon game drive - 16:00 to 18:30. The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary covers 28,000 acres of varied terrain — savannah, rocky escarpment, acacia woodland. The Tsavo red elephants move freely through the corridor. Lion prides are resident. The late afternoon drive in the dry season positions the vehicle at waterholes as the wildlife concentrates for the evening.
Return to the lodge. Welcome drink. Full-board dinner. Night at Salt Lick — above the waterhole. If buffalo arrive at 23:00 and the floodlight catches them, you will hear them before you see them.
🍽️ Meals: Lunch · Dinner
Day 2 - Saturday, May 30: Full Day Sanctuary · WWI Museum · Night Waterhole
Early morning game drive — 06:00
Predator activity peaks before the heat rises. The lion prides that spent the night following the waterhole circuit begin their morning rest. Leopard are regularly sighted in the acacia zone in early morning. Your guide reads the previous night's waterhole activity and positions accordingly.
Return to the lodge for a full breakfast.
Midday - WWI Taita Hills Heritage Museum (Free, Included)
The Taita Hills Museum documents the Battle of Salaita Hill (January 12, 1916) — the British East Africa Campaign's most costly early engagement. South African troops under Brigadier-General Wienholt Napier attempted to take the fortified hill position and were repulsed by the German Schutztruppe. The landscape around the lodge is the battlefield. The museum contextualises it. This is the only WWI battlefield experience on any Kenya safari package, and it is included in your price.
Afternoon game drive - 15:30 to 18:30
The extended afternoon circuit runs through the full sanctuary perimeter. Cheetahs are active on the open grassland sections. Buffalo herds of 200 to 400 animals gather at the main waterhole from approximately 16:30. Position there at dusk.
Full-board dinner. Second night at the lodge. The waterhole does not sleep.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner
Day 3 - Madaraka Day, June 1: Final Drive · Voi Station · Nairobi
Early breakfast by 07:00
Short morning game drive - 07:30 to 09:00 - if your train schedule allows. Your guide confirms based on Voi departure time.
Depart lodge at 09:30 for Voi Station. The return transfer is again via the game drive corridor — a final pass through the Tsavo ecosystem before the train.
Board at Voi Station approximately 12:05 PM. Arrive in Nairobi early afternoon.
It is Madaraka Day. Kenya's self-governance anniversary. You have spent the Madaraka holiday weekend in a piece of Kenya that most Kenyans describe, but few have stood in.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast
Wildlife You Will Encounter 🦁
The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary functions as a critical wildlife corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West, two of the largest national parks on Earth. Species move freely through the corridor seasonally.

Who This Madaraka Day Getaway Is For 🌍
This Salt Lick SGR safari suits couples and small friend groups who want a genuinely exclusive Kenya experience without a long road journey. The waterhole at night - animals below the boardwalk in the floodlight - is a completely different safari experience from a day-only game drive destination. If you have been to the Masai Mara and want something that feels nothing like it, you are in the right place.
Frequently Asked Questions ❓
What makes Salt Lick Safari Lodge different from other Kenya safari lodges?
Salt Lick is built on stilts over a permanent floodlit waterhole in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. The elevated walkways connecting the rooms position you directly above the waterhole where wildlife drinks throughout the day and night. Elephant families, buffalo herds, lion, and waterbuck visit the waterhole at night under floodlights — visible from your room window and from the elevated walkways. No other lodge in Kenya offers this specific experience.
Is the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary a national park?
No. The Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a 28,000-acre private conservancy managed by Sarova Hotels, adjacent to the Tsavo West National Park boundary. It functions as a wildlife corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The sanctuary fees are different from KWS national park fees — for EAC Citizens and Residents, sanctuary fees are included in this package. Non-residents pay a separate sanctuary fee reflected in the pricing table.
Do I book my own SGR train ticket?
Yes. SGR train tickets are booked independently at krc.co.ke. The package price includes everything from Voi Station onwards. Book your train tickets as soon as your safari is confirmed — Madaraka Day weekend trains fill up. Share your Voi arrival time with Wild Springs when confirming and we ensure the vehicle is at the platform.
Can children stay at Salt Lick Safari Lodge?
Children under 5 years are not permitted at Salt Lick Safari Lodge — this is a Sarova group safety policy due to the open walkways above the waterhole. Children aged 5 to 11 sharing with an adult pay 50% of the adult sharing rate. Children 5 to 11 in their own room pay 75% of the adult sharing rate. Taita Hills Safari Resort welcomes all ages.
What is the WWI Heritage Tour and is it really free?
Yes, it is free and included in both packages. The Taita Hills was the site of the Battle of Salaita Hill on January 12, 1916 — one of the first major engagements of the British East Africa Campaign of World War One. South African troops attempting to take the German-held hill position suffered significant losses. The museum at Taita Hills Safari Resort documents the campaign with artefacts, maps, and contextual history. It is the only WWI battlefield experience included in any Kenya safari package.
What is the difference between Waterhole and Park View rooms at Salt Lick?
Waterhole rooms at Salt Lick are positioned with direct overlooking views of the main floodlit waterhole. This is the prime position — the reason most people book Salt Lick specifically. Park View rooms overlook the surrounding bushland and are at a lower price point. Both room types are in the same elevated lodge structure on stilts, have the same access to the elevated walkways, and use the same dining and common facilities.
Is this the same as the other Madaraka Day Tsavo safari Wild Springs is running?
No. Wild Springs is running three separate Madaraka Day safari options in 2026. This package is the Salt Lick and Taita Hills Sanctuary experience — a private conservancy adjacent to Tsavo West, staying above a floodlit waterhole, with the WWI museum included. The Tsavo Madaraka Express package stays in Tsavo East public park lodges such as Man Eaters Camp and Voi Wildlife Lodge. The Samburu package goes north to the Samburu National Reserve entirely. Three different destinations, same long weekend.
How do I confirm my booking?
WhatsApp +254 729 257 317 with your chosen lodge (Salt Lick or Taita Hills), room type (Waterhole or Park View for Salt Lick), group size, residency category, and your SGR Voi arrival time. We confirm within 24 hours. A 30% deposit confirms your place. Balance due 7 days before departure. M-Pesa Paybill 4065921, account: your name plus Salt Lick.
