π² 2-Day Aberdare National Park Forest Safari | Treetops Lodge & Karuru Falls
Safari at a Glance
Sleep where queens are made. Stand before Kenya's tallest waterfall. Track elephants through misty forests.
There is a wooden lodge on stilts in the Aberdare forest. In 1952, a young woman sat there watching the waterhole below. Her name was Elizabeth. She climbed the ladder a princess. She descended a queen.
This is Treetops. It still stands. The elephants still come at dusk. The leopards still stalk the bamboo thickets. And two hours away, the Karuru Falls still drops 273 meters through three tiers of green moss and volcanic rockβthe tallest waterfall in Kenya, hidden in a forest most travelers never bother to see.
This is not the Mara. There are no wide-open plains here. The Aberdares are mist, and mud, and towering indigenous trees dripping with lichen. It is cold when Nairobi is hot. It is quiet when the city is loud. You come here to breathe, to stand under waterfalls, to watch forest elephants from a wooden deck with a whiskey in your hand.
Two days. One night. A different kind of safari.

πΊοΈ The Itinerary: What Happens
Day 1: Nairobi β Aberdare β Treetops Lodge
07:00 β Pickup from your Nairobi hotel or the airport. The city is already awake. You head north on the Thika Road, passing pineapple plantations and the blue silhouettes of the distant mountains.
09:30 β Brief stop at the Karatina market if you need supplies, then the road climbs. You feel the temperature drop as you gain altitude. The air smells of eucalyptus and rain.
11:00 β Enter Aberdare National Park through the Nyeri or Mutubio Gate. The forest closes in. Giant bamboo arches over the road. Cape buffalo stare from the undergrowth.
12:30 β Arrive at Treetops Lodge or The Ark. These are not normal hotels. Treetops is a wooden treehouse on stilts. The Ark looks like a ship perched on a hillside. Both have waterholes below where animals come to drink.
13:00 β Lunch with a view. From the deck, you might already see elephants or bushbucks at the salt lick.
14:30 β First game drive. The Aberdares are not about Big Five checklists. They are about finding things. Your guide knows the clearings where bongo antelopes feed, the ravines where black leopards have been spotted, and the muddy wallows where forest elephants bathe. The light filters green through the canopy.
18:00 β Return to the lodge. Shower, change, head to the deck.
19:00 β Dinner is served. Then the night watch begins. The lodges have floodlights over the waterholes. You sit with tea (or something stronger) and watch hyenas, genets, and occasionally rhinos emerge from the black forest. The barking of baboons signals a leopard nearby.
Overnight: Treetops Lodge or The Ark Lodge (full board).
Day 2: Karuru Falls β Chania Falls β Return to Nairobi
06:00 β Early coffee on the deck. The mist is thick this morning. You can hear elephants trumpeting somewhere in the valley.
07:00 β Depart for the waterfalls. The road to Karuru is roughβ4Γ4 only. You bounce through moorland where the trees stop, and the grass turns gold.
08:30 β Karuru Falls. The highest waterfall in Kenya is at 273 meters. It drops in three tiersβ117m, then 26m, then 130mβinto a gorge so deep you cannot see the bottom. The spray rises up to meet you. There are two viewing platforms. Stand on the second one. Feel the thunder in your chest. π€ Can you hike to the bottom? No. The ravine is impassable. But the view from the top is the money shot.
10:00 β Drive to Chania Falls. This one is differentβnarrower, hidden in a slick ravine with wooden stairs and ropes to help you down. You can stand at the plunge pool. The water is ice-cold and coffee-colored from the peat.
11:30 β Magura Falls and Queen's Cave. A short 800m walk. Behind this waterfall is a cave where Mau Mau fighters hid from colonial forces during the independence war. Princess Elizabeth had lunch near here in 1952 before she learned she was queen .
13:00 β Picnic lunch in the forest or back at the lodge.
14:30 β Depart Aberdare. The drive down is faster. You drop through the cloud layer into sunshine.
17:30 β Arrive in Nairobi. Drop-off at your hotel or airport.

β οΈ Important Travel Notes
π§οΈ Weather: This is a rainforest. Rain can happen anytime. Bring a raincoat and warm layers (fleece/down jacket). It gets cold at night (10Β°C).
π₯Ύ Fitness: The Karuru Falls walk is 4.5km downhill and back up. Moderate fitness required. Chania and Magura are short (800m) but steep with stairs.
π Roads: Inside the park are murram (dirt). A 2WD can manage in the dry season, but we use a 4Γ4 for comfort and safety.
π¦ Safety: Armed KWS ranger accompanies all waterfall walks. Buffaloes are dangerous. Stay close to your guide.
π± Connectivity: No phone signal in most of the park. Treetops has limited WiFi. Embrace the disconnection.
