The Forest That Was Nearly Lost

In the late 1990s, Karura Forest was being stolen.

Connected developers, with backing from powerful interests, had fenced off large sections of the forest and were clearing them for private real estate. Nairobi was losing one of its most significant green spaces — 1,041 hectares of indigenous highland forest inside city limits — and almost nothing was being done about it.

Then Wangari Maathai showed up with the Green Belt Movement and planted trees on the stolen land. The response was violent — her team was beaten by hired guards while police watched. The images went around the world. The outrage that followed stopped the encroachment.

In 2004, Wangari Maathai became the first African woman and the first environmentalist to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Committee cited, among other things, her work to protect Karura Forest.

The forest you are walking in today exists because of that fight. It is worth knowing that before you enter.

Today Karura Forest is managed by the Kenya Forest Service in partnership with Friends of Karura Forest - the community trust that maintains the trails, runs the visitor centre, and has turned Nairobi's most contested green space into its most visited nature destination.

The caves inside Karura Forest were used during the 1952–1956 independence struggle as shelter and concealment points for Mau Mau fighters. The proximity of the forest to Nairobi — the colonial administrative centre — made it strategically important. Fighters could move between the forest and the city using the dense cover that the indigenous trees provided.

Your guide explains this history at the cave entrance. Not from a placard — from knowledge that has been passed down within the communities that lived alongside the forest. The connection between the colonial-era fight for Kenya's land and the modern fight to protect Karura from encroachment is not accidental. Both are the same argument, in different centuries.

Birdwatching at Karura 🦅

Karura Forest is a designated Important Bird Area (IBA) with over 200 recorded species. The forest's position within Nairobi creates a concentration effect — birds that would normally range across a much larger territory are compressed into 1,041 hectares, making sighting density unusually high.

Key species:

  • Hartlaub's Turaco — the forest's signature bird, crimson wing flash visible from the trail
  • African Crowned Eagle — nests in old-growth sections of the indigenous forest
  • Bar-tailed Trogon — present in dense understorey, often overlooked
  • Various Sunbird species — active in flowering sections along the river trail
  • African Fish Eagle — audible from the Lily Lake section

Serious birdwatchers should book the 06:30 AM early-morning session with a dedicated birding guide. The peak activity window before 09:00 is when the forest delivers its highest species count. Log your sightings at the Karura Forest eBird hotspot.
