What This Page Is

Kilimanjaro National Park charges in tiers, and citizens of East African Community states pay a fraction of what everyone else pays. Park fees are a large part of a climb's cost, so the gap is large. The prices on our thirteen route pages are non-resident prices; the citizen prices are here.

Before anything else, the sentence almost nobody else publishes: if you are a foreign national living in Kenya on a residence or work permit, you do not get the East African citizen rate in Tanzania. You pay the full non-resident rate. It catches people every year, including some who have lived in Nairobi for twenty years.

📋 The East African Citizen Rate, Per Person

The rate is flat per route: it does not rise for the longer version. Marangu is KES 75,000 for the five-day or the six-day; every other route is KES 95,000 whatever its length. All park fees are inside those figures, and we print no dollar equivalent.

Who Qualifies

The citizen rate is for citizens of East African Community Partner States. It is a question of citizenship, not of where you live, and you prove it at the park gate with your passport.

We do not publish a list of the qualifying states, and we would rather explain why than leave a silent gap. The Community has admitted a new Partner State since Tanzania National Parks last published its tariff, and the authority has not republished it since. The tariff names a list and adds a catch-all covering any state that later joins — so the printed list is out of date and the catch-all is untested at the gate. We could copy somebody else's list and look more helpful; it would be a list we cannot stand behind. If you hold an East African passport, ask us and we will confirm your rate in writing before you book.

The Residence Permit Trap

A foreign national holding a Kenyan residence permit pays the full non-resident rate on Kilimanjaro. Not the citizen rate, and not a resident rate either. The full one.

The reason is simple once you see it. A residence permit is valid only in the country that issued it. Tanzania's park tariff does have a middle tier for expatriates and residents living in Tanzania, and it lists which documents prove it: a Tanzanian residence permit Class A, B or C, a Tanzanian exemption certificate, a Tanzanian temporary pass, or a diplomatic passport. A Kenyan permit is not on that list and cannot be, and there is no reciprocity clause. The tier above is defined by citizenship, so that does not help either.

Concretely: a British, Indian, German or American national who has lived and worked in Nairobi for twenty years, whose children were born in Kenya, who holds a valid Kenyan work permit and pays Kenyan tax, is a non-resident at a Kilimanjaro gate and will be charged as one. So will their spouse and children, unless those family members hold East African citizenship themselves.

This is not our rule and we cannot bend it — park fees are set by the park authority and collected at the gate. It is the most expensive misunderstanding in this market, and you should hear it from us rather than from a ranger on the morning of your climb. If you do hold a Tanzanian residence permit or exemption certificate, tell us: that is the one permit that changes your park fees.

Proof at the Gate

Bring your passport. The park authority's published tariff says nationals of East African Community member states must produce their passport at the entry gate. It specifies a passport and nothing else. You will see it said online that an EAC identity card is enough; the tariff does not say so, and we will not send you to a gate on that assumption.

Citizenship is checked at the gate, in person, when your party registers. If you cannot prove it, you are charged the non-resident rate on the spot. That is a large sum, payable at the gate, and not something we can absorb or argue away afterwards. If your passport is at an embassy, has expired, or you planned to travel on an identity card, tell us before you book.

• Licensed mountain guide and full mountain crew
• All meals on the mountain
• Drinking water on the mountain
• Group equipment on the mountain — tents and camp kit on the eleven camping itineraries; on Marangu you sleep in the park huts and no tents are used
• Transfers to the start gate and back from the exit gate

• Getting to Tanzania and home again
• Whatever entry permission Tanzania requires of your passport — we do not publish visa rules, so confirm yours before you book
• Travel insurance — it must cover trekking to 6,000 m including helicopter evacuation
• Personal trekking gear and any gear hire
• Tips for the mountain crew

About tips. Tips are customary and in nobody's price. They are worked out for the group as a whole and shared among the guides, cook and porters, not charged per climber, so the cost per person falls sharply as the group grows: two climbers carry the whole tip between them, six carry the same tip between six. We put the figure in writing before you travel.

Because the rate is flat, route choice is about the climb you want rather than what you can afford, and the extra day costs nothing. Take the longer version: more days on the mountain is the one thing every source agrees improves your chances.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the citizen rate cheaper because something is cut out of the climb?

No. The itinerary, guide, crew, food, equipment and camps are identical. The difference is only what the park charges.

I am a Kenyan citizen living in Europe. Do I qualify?

Yes. The rate follows citizenship, not residence. With dual citizenship, register on the East African passport.

I hold a Kenyan permanent residence permit. Do I qualify?

No. A residence permit is valid only where it was issued, and Tanzania's resident tier is for holders of Tanzanian documents.

Can I pay in shillings, and is there a group discount?

Yes, by M-Pesa or bank transfer. There is no group discount: the rate is flat per person however many of you climb.

Do I still need a yellow fever certificate travelling from Kenya?

Generally yes, because you are travelling from Kenya. Tanzania requires one from travellers over a year old arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, or transiting more than 12 hours through an airport in one. Kenya is on the World Health Organization's risk list. Carry it even on a connection, where a delay can push you past 12 hours, and confirm requirements before you travel.

What if I cannot see my nationality confirmed anywhere?

Ask us and we will check before you book. We would rather tell you the position is unconfirmed than take a deposit on a rate we cannot guarantee at the gate.

A 50% deposit confirms the booking. The balance is due 14 days before departure. Booking inside 14 days: full payment confirms it. Cancel with 14 days' notice for a full refund, or reschedule within 12 months.

We accept M-Pesa and bank transfer. Payment details are sent with your written invoice.

We never request payment through social media, personal phone numbers, or any account or link not confirmed in writing by our office. If in doubt, call us before paying anyone.
