Why the Marangu Waterfalls and Chagga Caves Tour?
The Marangu Waterfalls and Chagga Caves tour is a day trip from Moshi to the Chagga village on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro that most climbers only pass through on their way to the gate. It is about 40 km from Moshi, roughly an hour's drive, and the village sits about 9 km below Marangu Gate. This day stays outside the national park, so no park fee applies; entry fees for the sites on this itinerary are included. It is about the people who farm these slopes — bananas, vegetables, coffee, and mbege, the banana beer that is still brewed here — and about what they built underground when their neighbours came for their cattle.
Two stops. A waterfall. Marangu has several within reach of the village; the walk on this page is to Ndoro Falls. It is 4 km there and back, an hour and a half to two hours, with a steep descent to the pool and a cold swim at the bottom if you want one. And the caves — officially the Marangu Defences Historic Site, looked after by Tanzania's Antiquities Division — a network of hand-dug chambers and passages you enter with the guide and a torch. The Chagga Live Museum is next to the caves; if you would like it added, tell us when you book.
The Chagga dug these chambers — by most accounts in the 1700s, well before colonial rule — as refuges from Maasai cattle raids and from wars between neighbouring Chagga chiefdoms. Women, children, elders and cattle sheltered below while the men fought outside. Some accounts say parts were extended in the late 1800s during resistance to the Germans. You will hear figures from the guides about how many people fitted inside and how far the tunnels run; we do not print them because we cannot verify them. What we can say is that it is low and narrow in places. If you dislike confined spaces, say so and stay at the entrance; the waterfall and the village are still a full day.

The order of the stops varies with the day. Below runs the waterfall first.
🚐 Pickup in Moshi and the drive to Marangu
Our guide collects you from your Moshi accommodation at the time confirmed with your booking. About 40 km and roughly an hour, on the same road climbers take to Marangu Gate, which is about 9 km above the village. The slopes get greener as you climb: Marangu gets around 800–1,000 mm of rain a year, and the banana and coffee plots show it.
🥾 The walk to Ndoro Falls
A muddy road at first, then single-track, then the descent: steep, with wooden poles to hold on to, down to the base of the falls. About 4 km there and back and an hour and a half to two hours, with roughly 200 m of descent and ascent altogether. The 100 m or so of stairs back up is the hardest part of the day.
🌊 At the falls
Swim if you want to; the water is cold. The rocks at the pool are slippery; your guide will show you where to stand. If the day allows, Monjo Falls is close by — small, but with a large swimming hole completely surrounded by ferns and vines, popular in the dry season. Adding Monjo makes the walk about 5.5 km.
🕳️ The caves
Officially the Marangu Defences Historic Site. You go in with the guide and a torch. The guides walk you through chambers they identify as a kitchen, sleeping space, a place for livestock and a mortuary, with ventilation shafts running upward and a narrow ambush chamber for anyone who did not know the entry signal. The earth they dug out was carried to the rivers so that nobody would see the work. It is low and narrow in places; you will crouch.

👍 Who This Trip Suits — and Who It Doesn't
It suits anyone who wants to know how people have lived on this mountain, not only how to climb it; climbers who have just come down the Marangu route and want to see the village they drove through; and families whose children can manage a long flight of steps.
It does not suit wheelchair users — the waterfall route is steps, mud and rock, and the caves are hand-dug passages. It is a poor choice for anyone whose knees cannot take a hundred metres of stairs down and up again. If you dislike confined spaces, the caves are not for you, though you can stay at the entrance and still have the rest of the day. Were the caves built for the colonial wars?
Mainly no. By most accounts the Chagga dug them in the 1700s, well before colonial rule, as refuges from Maasai cattle raids and from wars between neighbouring Chagga chiefdoms; the late-1800s German-era extension some accounts mention is a footnote, not the story.
How tight are the Chagga caves?
Low and narrow in places; you will crouch, and you go in with the guide and a torch. Nobody has to go in. If you dislike confined spaces, say so at the entrance and wait there.
Which waterfall do we visit?
Confirmed with your booking. Marangu has several within reach; the walk described on this page is to Ndoro Falls, with the smaller Monjo Falls close by if time allows. Tell us if you have a preference and we will say what is possible on your date.
Can I swim at the Marangu waterfalls?
Yes, at Ndoro and at Monjo. The water is cold and the rocks are slippery; your guide will show you where to get in. You don't have to go in.
How hard is the walk to Ndoro Falls?
Moderate, and short. About 4 km there and back, 1.5 to 2 hours, roughly 200 m of descent and ascent. The steep stairs down and back up are the whole difficulty; there are wooden poles to hold on the descent. Your own poles help if your knees dislike steps.
Is this inside Kilimanjaro National Park?
No. Marangu village is about 9 km below Marangu Gate and this day never enters the park, so no park fee applies. If you want the park, book the Mandara Huts day hike instead, or as well.
