More Than a Beach Chair
- Most Mombasa packages sell you two nights on the sand and call it a holiday. This one gives you the whole coast — the white beaches of the North Coast, the 400-year-old walls of Fort Jesus, the spice-scented alleys of Old Town, and the reclaimed wilderness of Haller Park, all in three well-paced days.
- Mombasa is Kenya's oldest city and East Africa's gateway to the Indian Ocean. For over a thousand years, Swahili, Arab, Persian, Portuguese, Indian, and British traders have passed through its harbour, and every one of them left something behind — in the architecture, the food, the language, and the rhythm of coastal life. This trip is built to show you that layered history alongside the beach time, so you come home with more than a tan.
- Travel down by the Madaraka Express SGR through the Tsavo wilderness, or fly and be on the beach by lunch. Either way, this is the coast done properly.

🌅 Day 1 — Arrival & Coastal Serenity
- Arrive in Mombasa by SGR at the Mombasa Terminus or by flight at Moi International Airport. Our vehicle transfers you to your North Coast beach resort in Nyali or Bamburi. After a Swahili welcome and lunch, the afternoon is yours on the soft white sand of the North Coast — the Indian Ocean here is warm, calm inside the reef, and a completely different sea from the cold Atlantic most visitors know.
- As the sun drops, take a stroll along the shore. On the Kenyan coast the sunset happens over the land behind you, lighting the ocean in front in soft pinks and golds — a photographer's hour.
- 🍽️ Dinner and overnight at your resort.
🦒 Day 2 — Haller Park & Ocean Adventures
- After breakfast, visit Haller Park in Bamburi — one of the world's most celebrated ecological restoration projects. In 1971, Dr. René Haller began transforming an exhausted Bamburi Cement limestone quarry into a living forest. Today it is home to giraffe, hippo, buffalo, waterbuck, eland, crocodile, and giant tortoises — some over a century old. Time your visit for the 3:00pm to 4:00pm giraffe feeding, when you hand-feed the giraffes at the platform. This is also where the famous friendship between Owen the orphaned hippo and Mzee the giant tortoise unfolded.
- Spend the rest of the day on the water. Choose from a glass-bottom boat ride over the coral gardens of the Mombasa Marine National Park, snorkelling among the reef fish, or coastal water sports — jet skiing, parasailing, or a traditional dhow sail.
- 🍽️ Dinner and overnight at your resort.
🏰 Day 3 — Fort Jesus, Old Town & Departure
- Check out after breakfast and head into Mombasa Island for the coast's defining landmark: Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 and designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, the fort changed hands nine times between the Portuguese, Omani Arabs, and British — including the brutal 33-month Great Siege of Mombasa (1696–1698). Viewed from above, it is shaped like a human figure. Your guide walks you through the battlements, the Omani house, and the museum's Swahili and Portuguese artefacts.
- Then into Old Town — a maze of narrow streets lined with carved Zanzibari doors, coral-stone houses, ornate balconies, and spice shops. Visit the Mandhry Mosque area, browse for Swahili crafts and souvenirs, and taste coastal street food. A final transfer to the SGR station or airport completes your escape.
- 🍽️ Breakfast.
🌊 Want to extend? Add the South Coast — Diani Beach, or a Wasini Island and Kisite Marine Park dolphin-and-snorkel day. Ask us to build it in.
🏰 The Coast's Landmarks — In Depth
- Fort Jesus is one of the most historically significant buildings on the East African coast. Named Fortaleza de Jesus de Mombaça, it was the Portuguese Empire's key stronghold controlling the Indian Ocean spice and slave routes. Its walls still bear Portuguese and Omani inscriptions. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2011 as an outstanding example of 16th-century Portuguese military architecture. In the evenings the fort hosts a Sound and Light show.
- Old Town Mombasa is a living Swahili quarter where a thousand years of trade have blended Arab, Persian, Indian, Portuguese, and African influences into a single culture. The carved wooden doors, some centuries old, are the signature craft of the coast, each pattern telling something of the family behind it.
- Haller Park is proof that industrial land can be brought back to life. What Bamburi Cement quarried out, René Haller and his team rebuilt into a functioning forest ecosystem, now a model studied worldwide and one of the most family-friendly wildlife experiences on the coast.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I travel from Nairobi to Mombasa for this trip?
Two options. The Madaraka Express SGR runs from Nairobi Terminus to Mombasa Terminus through the Tsavo wilderness in about 5 to 6 hours, and is included in the SGR package. Or you can fly — a roughly one-hour flight to Moi International Airport, included in the flight package. Both packages include all transfers once you arrive. - How much does the 3-day Mombasa coast package cost?
From KES 18,500 per person for residents on the SGR package, or $290 for non-residents. The flight package is KES 32,000 for residents and $450 for non-residents. All rates are per person sharing and include return transport, two nights half-board accommodation on the North Coast, transfers, and a guided Fort Jesus and Old Town tour. Site entry fees are paid separately. - Is Fort Jesus worth visiting?
Yes. Fort Jesus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Portuguese in the 1590s and one of the most historically important buildings on the East African coast. It changed hands nine times between Portuguese, Omani, and British forces. The guided walk through its battlements and museum is one of the highlights of the Kenyan coast. - What can I see at Haller Park?
Haller Park is a nature sanctuary in Bamburi, restored from a limestone quarry, home to giraffe, hippo, buffalo, waterbuck, eland, crocodile, and giant tortoises. The 3:00pm to 4:00pm giraffe feeding, where you hand-feed the giraffes, is the standout experience and especially popular with families. - Can I go snorkelling or diving on this trip?
Yes. On Day 2 you can take a glass-bottom boat over the coral gardens of the Mombasa Marine National Park, snorkel among the reef fish, or arrange diving. Water sports such as jet skiing and parasailing are also available. These activities are paid separately from the package. - Is this trip suitable for families and couples?
Yes. The pace suits both. Families enjoy Haller Park and the calm reef-protected beaches, while couples appreciate the sunset strolls, the Old Town culture, and the resort time. The itinerary can be adjusted for either. - When is the best time to visit the Mombasa coast?
The coast is warm year-round. The drier, cooler months of June to October and January to February are the most comfortable, while the December holidays are lively but busier and pricier. We run the package throughout the year. - How do I book?
WhatsApp +254 729 257 317 with your dates, group size, and whether you prefer the SGR or flight package. We confirm availability within 24 hours. A deposit secures your booking. M-Pesa Paybill 4065921, account: your name + "Mombasa." 🌍 For Our International Guests
