Labour Day Is Three Days.
Most people in Nairobi spend the Labour Day weekend doing exactly what they do every other weekend. Maybe a lunch. Maybe a road trip nowhere in particular.
This year, we are going north.
Wild Springs Adventures is driving to Samburu National Reserve on 1st May 2026 and driving back on 3rd May. Three days. Two nights at Samburu Sopa Lodge. Three wildlife parks in one circuit. And five animal species, the Special Five Animals.
The Samburu Special Five — the Reticulated Giraffe, the Grevy's Zebra, the Somali Ostrich, the Beisa Oryx, and the Gerenuk — exist only in Kenya's northern frontier. They cannot be seen in Masai Mara. They cannot be seen in Amboseli. This is the only part of the country where all five live.

This Is Not the Masai Mara. That Is the Point.
Samburu National Reserve sits 350km north of Nairobi at 900 metres above sea level. The landscape is red — volcanic, semi-arid, studded with acacia and Doum palms. The Ewaso Ng'iro River cuts through the reserve from west to east, providing a year-round water source that draws the entire ecosystem to a single green corridor.
The Ewaso Ng'iro is why Samburu's wildlife viewing is so reliable. Every animal comes to the river.
Leopard. The riverine forest along the Ewaso Ng'iro provides ideal leopard habitat. Several habituated individuals are regularly visible in the fig trees, which is why Africa Unpacked rates Samburu as Kenya's premier leopard destination among wildlife photographers.
Elephant. Samburu's elephants are large and unafraid of vehicles. They approach the river in family groups from late afternoon and have done so for decades without alarm.
Lion. Multiple prides use the riverine corridor. Lions in Samburu are typically easier to locate than in the broken terrain of the Masai Mara because the river concentrates movement to a predictable corridor.
Bird life. Over 450 bird species have been recorded across the Samburu-Buffalo Springs-Shaba ecosystem. The Martial eagle, Lilac-breasted roller, African fish eagle, and Grey-capped social weaver all reliably appear on a 3-day visit.
The Samburu Special Five — Why You Cannot See These Anywhere Else
The Samburu Special Five are five species found only in Kenya's northern arid zone, not in any southern or central park.
Reticulated Giraffe
A separate species from the Masai Giraffe. Taller. More boldly patterned, with clean white polygon lines dividing a rich chestnut coat. Found only in northern Kenya, southern Ethiopia, and Somalia. Samburu holds one of the strongest remaining populations. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation lists the Reticulated Giraffe as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
Grevy's Zebra
The largest wild equid on Earth. Dramatically different from the plains zebra — narrower stripes, rounded ears, and a white belly. Classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List. Fewer than 3,000 Grevy's Zebra remain globally. Samburu holds one of the most important remaining populations. The Grevy's Zebra Trust operates conservation work directly in this ecosystem.
Somali Ostrich
Reclassified as a separate species in 2014. The male's neck skin is blue-grey rather than the pink of the common ostrich. Range-restricted to the Horn of Africa region. You will see them on the open plains away from the river, typically in the early morning hours before the heat builds.
Beisa Oryx
Built for aridity. Long, rapier-straight horns reaching up to a metre in length. Grey coat with black and white facial markings and a white underbelly. Moves in small herds on the open scrubland away from the river. One of Africa's most striking large antelopes and a species that the African Wildlife Foundation identifies as a priority species for northern Kenya conservation.
Gerenuk
The giraffe-necked antelope. Long neck, disproportionately long legs, and enormous ears. What makes the Gerenuk unique among all African antelopes is its habit of browsing while standing fully upright on its hind legs - reaching tree foliage no other antelope can access. Watching a Gerenuk browse bipedally from your vehicle is one of the most remarkable wildlife moments in Kenya.
All five on one Labour Day weekend. That is why we are going to Samburu.
Full 3-Day Itinerary — Labour Day Samburu Safari 2026
Day 1 — Friday 1 May 2026: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
07:00 — Departure from Nairobi. Hotel or CBD pickup point — confirm with Wild Springs at booking.
The road north. The A2 highway heads through the Central Highlands — Thika Road, Meru Road, past the slopes of Mount Kenya. The landscape shifts progressively from highland agriculture to the drier, redder terrain of the north. At Nanyuki (2,005m above sea level), you cross the equator on the A2. Nanyuki town is your last major stop before the reserve.
Equator crossing at Nanyuki — approximately 3 hours from Nairobi. Photo stop. This is the same equator that runs through the Samburu ecosystem, making the reserve one of the few places on Earth where you are on the line between hemispheres while watching animals that exist nowhere else in the world.
12:00 — Arrive at Samburu Sopa Lodge. Check in. Lunch.
14:30 — First game drive. The Samburu afternoon light is warm and direct. The Grevy's Zebra is most active in the cooler afternoon hours. The Ewaso Ng'iro River elephant families begin their approach to the water from 15:00 onwards.
Special Five first sightings. Your guide targets the Reticulated Giraffe and Grevy's Zebra on the first circuit. Both are reliably located in the open scrubland east of the lodge. Gerenuk often appear near the acacia boundary in the late afternoon.
18:30 — Return to lodge. Sundowners. Samburu Sopa Lodge is the venue for the only outdoor planetarium inside any Kenya Wildlife Service-managed national reserve. Ask about the evening astro experience at check-in — available on selected evenings.
19:30 — Labour Day dinner at the lodge. Tonight you are 350km from Nairobi. The northern sky above Samburu is one of the darkest in East Africa.
Meals: Lunch and Dinner · Accommodation: Samburu Sopa Lodge
Day 2 — Saturday 2 May 2026: Full Day Three-Park Wildlife Circuit
06:00 — Pre-dawn departure. Samburu at dawn is worth the early alarm. The Ewaso Ng'iro River at first light — elephants at the water, fish eagles calling, the leopard in the riverside fig trees — is the Samburu experience at its most complete.
Morning circuit — Samburu National Reserve. Systematic Special Five tracking. The Somali Ostrich pair is reliably spotted on the open plains 4km south of the lodge. Beisa Oryx appear in mixed groups with Gerenuk near the reserve's eastern margin. Your guide has radio contact with other guides and knows where the leopard was located overnight.
Ewaso Ng'iro River crossing. The road crosses the river at the Buffalo Springs boundary — the moment you enter a different reserve ecosystem. Buffalo Springs National Reserve lies directly south of Samburu. The vegetation shifts slightly. Doum palms line the riverbank. Crocodiles on the sandbanks are larger and more numerous in Buffalo Springs.
Shaba National Reserve. The easternmost of the three. Different terrain — more volcanic, with rocky outcrops and natural springs. The springs at Chanler's Falls are worth the drive east. Shaba National Reserve is administered by the Kenya Wildlife Service and is the least visited of the three reserves, offering the most exclusive game drive experience of the circuit.
Optional — Mount Ololokwe rock hike. The sacred mountain of the Samburu people rises dramatically from the plain outside the reserve boundary. A guided ascent offers panoramic views across the entire northern frontier ecosystem. Ask Wild Springs at booking — this activity adds approximately 3 hours and is arranged with local community guides.
Afternoon — Return circuit targeting any Special Five species not yet confirmed. Grevy's Zebra are most visible in the late afternoon hours when they move from shade back to open ground.
Optional — Samburu warrior cultural walk. A guided evening walk with a Samburu community member near the lodge boundary. Cultural context for the landscape. The Samburu people are the namesake of the reserve and have coexisted with this wildlife for generations.
19:00 — Dinner at Samburu Sopa Lodge.
Evening — Planetarium experience. Samburu Sopa Lodge operates the only outdoor planetarium inside any Kenya Wildlife Service managed reserve. Ask at reception to confirm availability for this evening.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner · Accommodation: Samburu Sopa Lodge
Day 3 — Sunday 3 May 2026: Sunrise Drive and Return to Nairobi
06:00 — Final sunrise game drive. The Samburu morning — dawn light on the Ewaso Ng'iro, the elephant families beginning their morning river approach — is what you want to see one more time before the drive south.
Final Special Five check. Your guide circles the most reliable Gerenuk and Grevy's Zebra areas on this last morning. The Beisa Oryx are often in mixed herds with Reticulated Giraffe on the eastern scrubland.
08:30 — Return to lodge. Labour Day breakfast. Check out.
09:30 — Depart Samburu for Nairobi.
Return road. The drive south retraces the highland road — through Nanyuki, back across the equator, through the Central Highlands. Three days of wildlife in the northern frontier. You arrive back in Nairobi, not quite the same as you left.
15:30 — Arrive in Nairobi. Drop-off at hotel, residence, or airport.

Why Samburu for Labour Day
Labour Day falls on Friday, 1 May in 2026. That gives you Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — three full days — before returning to work on Monday, 4 May.
The Masai Mara National Reserve drive is 5 to 6 hours each way. Samburu is also 5 to 7 hours. But Samburu offers five animal species you simply cannot see anywhere in southern Kenya. If you have already been to the Mara, Samburu is the correct next step. If you have never done either, Samburu is the more exclusive and less crowded experience.
This trip runs once. On this specific weekend. There is no next time on these exact dates.

This was my first safari with them, and they completely exceeded my expectations. Frequently Asked Questions
Is this trip only for Kenyan citizens?
No. The Labour Day Samburu safari is open to all nationalities. Kenyan citizens and East African residents pay KES 27,499 per person (Safari Van) or KES 29,900 per person (4x4 Land Cruiser). International non-residents pay $350 per person (Safari Van) or $390 per person (Land Cruiser). Non-resident KWS park fees are included in the USD pricing at the 2026 prevailing rate.
What vehicle should I choose — Safari Tour Van or Land Cruiser?
The Safari Tour Van is comfortable and costs less. The 4x4 Land Cruiser has better ground clearance for the rougher northern Kenya roads and a higher elevated pop-up roof position for game viewing and photography. For serious wildlife photography or maximum comfort, choose the Land Cruiser. For a cost-effective comfortable safari, the van delivers the full experience.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes — strongly recommended. Samburu is a remote reserve. The nearest major hospital is in Nanyuki, approximately 2 hours from the park. Wild Springs includes AMREF Flying Doctors cover for emergency air evacuation, but personal travel insurance provides broader protection including trip cancellation and medical expenses.
What is the Samburu Special Five?
Five animal species found only in Kenya's northern arid zone: Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx, and Gerenuk. None of these five can be seen in Masai Mara, Amboseli, or Tsavo. Samburu National Reserve is the only easily accessible destination in Kenya where all five are reliably visible on a single visit. The Grevy's Zebra Trust and African Wildlife Foundation both maintain active conservation programmes for these species in this ecosystem.
How do I book?
