Rurimeria Hill Moorland Trek | Saturday 11 April 2025
Join a Group. Test Your Limits. Stand on the Third-Highest Point in the Aberdares.
The alarm will go off at 4:30 AM. You will question your life choices. But by 2:00 PM, standing on the summit of Rurimeria Hill at 3,860 meters, with Mount Kenya's glaciers to your left and the Great Rift Valley falling away to your right, you will know exactly why you came.
This is not a walk in Karura Forest. This is a proper mountain day. Seven to ten hours of steep climbing, false summits that break your spirit, boggy moorland that tries to steal your boots, and a final ridge where the wind hits so hard you lean into it. But you will also get the best single-day hike in Kenya. The kind that makes you eligible for Mount Kenya. The kind that turns strangers into people you trust with your life.
We are running one group departure on Saturday, 11th April. Transport from Nairobi, armed ranger, professional guide, park fees, all handled. You just need to show up fit and ready

The Itinerary
05:00 ? Meet in Nairobi. Sign waivers. Load into transport. Most people sleep the first hour.
08:00 ? Arrive Ndunyu Njeru. KWS registration. Meet your armed ranger. Final toilet stop.
08:30 ? Cross the electric fence at Gathuthi. Enter the bamboo zone. The warm-up ends here.
09:00 to 11:00 ? The Bamboo Climb. Three hundred meters of gain in thick forest. Heart rate stays high. This is where you learn if you trained enough.
11:00 to 12:00 ? Heather Zone. First views. Eat something. You will need it.
12:00 to 13:30 ? The Switchbacks. False summit after false summit. The mental section. If you have not reached 3,600m by 13:00, we turn you around. No exceptions.
13:30 to 14:30 ? The Moorland Push. Bog, tussock grass, giant groundsels like alien broccoli. Wind. Cold. Then suddenly, the cairn.
14:30 ? Summit. Thirty minutes for photos, food, and the view. Mount Kenya to the north. The Rift Valley to the east. On a clear day, you can see forever.
14:45 ? Mandatory descent. Afternoon fog is dangerous above 3,500m. We move fast.
17:30 ? Back at the vehicle. Dusty, exhausted, already laughing about the hard parts.
20:00 ? Nairobi. Drop-off at CBD. Hugs. Exchange numbers. You will be sore tomorrow. You will already want to do it again.

Why This Group Departure
Cheaper than private. Same trail, same safety, lower cost because we split transport.
Fixed date. No organizing. Just show up.
Curated group. We cap at 12 so you get attention from the guide, not lost in a crowd.
Guaranteed departure. Minimum four people. If we cancel, you get full refund.
The Honest Risks
Altitude sickness is real. Headache, nausea, dizziness above 3,000m. We watch for it. We turn people around if needed. No summit is worth your health.
The weather turns fast. Morning sun becomes afternoon whiteout. We have a hard 14:45 descent cutoff regardless of how close you feel to the top.
Wildlife is present. Elephants and buffalo in the bamboo zone. This is why the armed ranger is non-negotiable.
The bogs are treacherous. Ankle-deep mud that looks like grass. Gaiters save you. We have seen people lose boots.
