9-Day Detailed Itinerary – Central Circuit Route
The Central Circuit Trail is the classic route to Margherita Peak. It allows proper acclimatization while showcasing the full ecological diversity of the Rwenzoris.
Day 1 – Nairobi to Kampala
Overnight bus transfer from Nairobi to Kampala. Comfortable coach travel with scheduled rest stops.
- Distance: Approx. 650 km
- Goal: Arrival and rest
Day 2 – Kampala to Nyakalengija (1,646 m)
Early transfer to Kasese and onward to Nyakalengija, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park headquarters.
- Registration and briefing

Day 3 – Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut (2,651 m)
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Terrain: Rainforest
You enter dense tropical forest alive with birds and primates. Expect mud, humidity, and your first taste of Rwenzori magic.
Day 4 – Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut (3,505 m)
- Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
- Vegetation transitions from forest to bamboo and giant heather
Cross the Bujuku River and begin feeling altitude gain.
Day 5 – John Matte to Elena Hut (4,541 m)
- Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
- High alpine terrain
Pass through the Bujuku Valley, surrounded by towering peaks and glacial lakes. This is serious mountain country now.

Day 6 – Margherita Peak Summit (5,109 m) & Descend to Kitandara Hut
Summit Day. The crown jewel.

Day 8 – Guy Yeoman to Nyabitaba & Exit
Long descent through bamboo and rainforest back to the park gate.
Transfer to Kasese for overnight rest.
Day 9 – Return to Nairobi
Bus transfer back to Nairobi.
