Masai Mara National Reserve ยท 3 to 6 Days ยท Fly-In from $1,800 Per Person ยท Big Five ยท Great Migration

45 Minutes, Not 6 Hours

That is the difference between flying and driving to the Masai Mara.

You leave Wilson Airport at 08:00. By 08:45 you are watching elephants drink at the Talek River from the window of a Land Cruiser. The road version of that morning involves leaving Nairobi at 06:00, sitting through Narok traffic, and arriving in time for lunch.

Wild Springs Adventures Masai Mara fly-in safari packages connect you from Wilson Airport โ€” Nairobi's domestic airport on Langata Road โ€” directly to the airstrip nearest your camp inside the reserve. Your KPSGA-certified driver-guide is waiting on the tarmac. The vehicle is loaded. The game drive starts.

This is the safari for people who fly business class and cannot understand why the last 270km should take 6 hours. It is also the safari for the traveler on a tight Kenya itinerary who wants 2 full days in the Mara without losing 2 days to the road.

Four routes. Multiple camp tiers. Daily departures on scheduled flights.

Why Fly to the Masai Mara

The honest calculation looks like this.

You save 3 to 4 real hours over road travel once you account for the Wilson Airport transfer (30 to 45 minutes from most Nairobi hotels), the 45-minute check-in requirement, and the flight itself. You do not save a full 5 to 6 hours. But the 3 to 4 hours you save are the good hours โ€” the ones where you would have been watching the same stretch of murram road between Narok and the gate.

More importantly, you land inside the reserve. Road safaris position you at camps outside the boundary. Fly-in camps sit on the Mara River, inside the Triangle, or deep inside the main reserve where the roads leading to the gate are behind you and the entire ecosystem is in front.

The flight makes sense when:

You have 3 days or fewer and cannot lose a day to the road on each end. You are travelling from Mombasa or Diani and want to reach the Mara without backtracking to Nairobi first. You are combining the Mara with Amboseli and want to fly between parks rather than drive. You simply prefer to land in the middle of something rather than work toward it.

The Four Routes Wild Springs Operates

Route 1 โ€” Nairobi to Mara Return (3 Days / 2 Nights)

For: Business travelers, short-stay international visitors, anyone with 3 days and no interest in the road.

Day 1: Transfer to Wilson Airport โ€” 07:00 hotel pickup. Check-in by 07:30 for the 08:00 departure. Flight 45 minutes. Land at your designated Mara airstrip โ€” Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, or Musiara depending on your camp. Driver-guide waiting. Game drive to camp. Afternoon drive.

Day 2: Full day in the reserve. Dawn game drive from 06:00. Breakfast at camp. Full day circuit โ€” Mara River, Musiara Marsh, open plains. Sunset drive.

Day 3: Morning drive from 06:30. Breakfast at camp. Transfer to the airstrip by 10:00 for the return flight. Land at Wilson Airport approximately 11:15. Transfer to your Nairobi hotel or JKIA for onward international connection.

Price from: $1,800 per person (2 sharing, mid-range camp) ยท See full pricing table below.

Route 2 โ€” Nairobi to Mara Return (4 Days / 3 Nights)

For: The recommended option. One extra night means one extra full day in the reserve.

The itinerary mirrors Route 1 but adds an additional full game drive day. By Day 3, your guide knows your preferences. They know which cheetah coalition you have not yet found. They know the leopard's fig tree. They use the day.

Price from: $2,200 per person (2 sharing, mid-range camp) ยท See full pricing table below.

Route 3 โ€” Mombasa / Diani to Mara to Nairobi (3 Days / 2 Nights)

For: Beach-and-bush travelers. The Diani Beach to Masai Mara to Nairobi arc is one of the most efficient Kenya itineraries available.

You do not fly back to Nairobi first. You fly directly from Ukunda Airstrip โ€” serving Diani Beach โ€” to the Masai Mara. Two nights in the reserve. Then a return flight to Nairobi's Wilson Airport where we collect you for JKIA or your Nairobi hotel.

Direct flights operate daily from July to October and December to March. During the quieter months, flights may route through Wilson Airport. Wild Springs confirms the direct routing at the time of booking based on current schedules.

Price from: $2,390 per person (2 sharing, mid-range camp) ยท See full pricing table below.

Route 4 โ€” Amboseli to Mara All-Fly (6 Days / 5 Nights)

For: First-timers who want Kenya's two greatest parks without a single long road transfer.

Day 1 to 3 at Amboseli โ€” elephant photography against Kilimanjaro. Then a scheduled flight from Amboseli's Oltukai Airstrip to the Masai Mara. Days 4 to 6 in the Mara for Big Five and migration. Return flight from the Mara to Wilson Airport on Day 6.

No overland leg. No wasted morning recovering from a road. Two of Africa's finest parks, entirely by air.

Price from: $3,800 per person (2 sharing, mid-range camps) ยท See full pricing table below.

The Wilson Airport โ€” What to Expect

Wilson Airport sits on Langata Road in Nairobi's southern suburbs. It is 20 minutes from the CBD with no traffic and 45 minutes in morning rush hour.

It is a small airport. That is the point. Check-in is fast. Security is straightforward. The departure lounge has seating and a cafรฉ. Arrive 45 minutes before your scheduled departure โ€” this is firm for domestic Kenya flights.

Luggage storage: Safarilink offers secure storage at Wilson Airport at approximately $5 per day. Most Nairobi hotels will hold bags for free if you are returning to them after the Mara. Do not bring a hard-shell suitcase to Wilson Airport. The baggage hold of a Cessna Caravan will not accept it, and you will be asked to leave it behind. One soft duffel or bag per person, maximum 15kg. Wild Springs sends this reminder with every booking confirmation.

The hop-stop system: Flights from Wilson to the Mara land at multiple airstrips. Your aircraft might stop at Keekorok first, then Ol Kiombo, then Musiara. You get a colour-coded card at check-in that tells you which stop is yours. The whole sequence from Wilson to your airstrip adds 15 to 30 minutes but is completely normal. You are watching the Mara landscape from the window the entire time.

The Mara Airstrips โ€” Where You Land

Your airstrip depends entirely on where your camp is located. Wild Springs books the correct flight routing to match your accommodation.

AirstripLocationBest Camps Served
KeekorokSouth-east of main reserveKeekorok Lodge, Siana Conservancy camps
Ol KiomboCentral-east main reserveAshnil Mara, Fig Tree Camp, Sarova Mara
Mara SerenaWest โ€” Mara TriangleMara Serena Safari Lodge โ€” on Mara River
MusiaraNorth-west โ€” Mara TriangleGovernors' Camp, Bateleur Camp โ€” hippo country
Mara NorthNorthern conservancyLaikipia Plateau transition camps โ€” lowest vehicle density
SianaEast โ€” Siana ConservancyBudget to mid-range camps near Sekenani Gate

The Mara Triangle: The western section of the Masai Mara, managed by the Mara Conservancy rather than Narok County. Stricter vehicle controls, better-maintained roads, fewer vehicles at sightings, and the best Mara River hippo viewing. The Musiara and Serena airstrips serve this zone. Wild Springs recommends the Triangle for photographers and serious wildlife observers.

The Camps Inside the Reserve

Road safaris stay outside the boundary to control costs. Fly-in safaris stay inside โ€” and the difference matters at dawn.

When your camp is on the Mara River, you hear the hippos at 03:00. When you are on the open plain inside the Triangle, you wake up and lions are 400 metres from your tent. There is no 20-minute drive to the gate before the game viewing starts. You walk out of your tent and you are in it.

Mid-Range Camps (Inside Reserve)

Ashnil Mara Camp โ€” sits directly on the Mara River. Watch hippos from the breakfast terrace. Served by Ol Kiombo airstrip. En-suite tents, hot water, generator power, reliable Wi-Fi. Full board. Our most booked mid-range camp for fly-in packages.

Sarova Mara Game Camp โ€” large camp, reliably operated, with a pool and good service. Central reserve location. Served by Ol Kiombo airstrip. Consistent standards year-round.

Fig Tree Camp โ€” riverine setting on the Talek River. Dense forest, resident leopard in the fig trees at the camp boundary. Well-run, good food.

Upper Mid-Range (Inside Reserve)

Mara Serena Safari Lodge โ€” the finest upper mid-range lodge in the Mara Triangle. Hilltop position with panoramic plains view. Musiara airstrip (15 minutes by vehicle). Good wine list. Reliable big cat guiding from their in-house guide team.

Governors' Il Moran Camp โ€” 10 tents on the Mara River in the Triangle. Exclusive, intimate, and positioned next to the best hippo concentration in the reserve. Musiara airstrip.

Luxury (Inside Reserve)

Angama Mara โ€” two camps on the Great Rift Valley escarpment rim above the Mara, at 1,950m. The dining room view covers the entire reserve. One of the most photographed lodges in Africa. Flight to Keekorok airstrip.

Mahali Mzuri โ€” Sir Richard Branson's Kenyan camp in the Mara North Conservancy. 12 tents, private conservancy, very low vehicle density. Best for photographers who need exclusivity at sightings. Mara North airstrip.

Mara Bushtops โ€” private plunge pools, butler service, open-air shower. The only luxury camp with its own dedicated staff ratio above 3:1 per guest. Ol Kiombo airstrip.

What Is Not Included

โœ— International flights to Nairobi

โœ— Travel insurance โ€” mandatory, must cover wildlife safari activities and emergency air evacuation

โœ— Conservancy fees where applicable (Mara North, Olare Motorogi, Naboisho) โ€” if your camp is in a conservancy rather than the national reserve, conservancy fees of $80 to $120 per person per day apply in addition to or instead of national reserve fees. Wild Springs specifies this clearly in your personalised quote.

โœ— Hot air balloon safari โ€” optional, $450 to $505 per person. This is worth every cent. The Mara from 200 metres at dawn โ€” the shadow of the balloon on the grass, the wildebeest herds below, the silence broken only by the burner โ€” is the photograph of a Kenya trip. Book the balloon night before, depart before dawn from camp. Champagne breakfast in the bush follows landing.

โœ— Tips and gratuities โ€” driver-guide $15 to $20 per day ยท camp staff $5 to $8 per day ยท cash, envelope, last day of safari

The Great Migration โ€” Fly-In Timing Guide

Flying to the Mara does not change the migration calendar. But it changes what you can do with a short window.

If you have 3 days and the crossings are active, a fly-in means you spend 2 full days in the reserve rather than 1.5 days after a road journey. For migration season specifically, that extra half-day is the difference between seeing a crossing and missing one.

MonthMigration StatusPark Fee Non-ResidentFly-In Recommendation
January to FebruaryCalving in Serengeti โ€” herds in Tanzania$100/dayโœ… Green Mara, excellent predators, short grass, no crowds
March to MayHerds moving north through Serengeti$100/dayโœ… Lush landscape โ€” excellent bird life and general game
JuneFirst crossings possible โ€” late month$100/dayโญโญโญ Early migration โ€” lower cost, first crossings
JulyActive crossings โ€” Mara Triangle$200/dayโญโญโญโญโญ Book minimum 3 months ahead
AugustPeak crossings โ€” highest frequency$200/dayโญโญโญโญโญ Most dramatic month โ€” limited lodge availability
SeptemberActive crossings โ€” herds dispersed$200/dayโญโญโญโญโญ Slightly less crowded than August
OctoberFinal crossings โ€” herds returning south$200/dayโญโญโญโญ Last chance โ€” still excellent
NovemberHerds in southern Serengeti$200/dayโญโญโญ Resident game excellent โ€” migration finished
DecemberFresh grass, returning herds$200/dayโญโญโญ Festive season โ€” book early for Christmas and New Year

The honest truth about river crossings: No guide, no matter how good, can guarantee a crossing on a specific day. The herds decide. What a fly-in gives you is more days in position. Two full game days, positioned at Lookout Hill or the Mara River at Musiara, gives you a significantly better probability than 1.5 road-travel-reduced days.

What You Will See

The Masai Mara holds approximately 1.5 million wildebeest during peak migration. It holds Africa's highest density of lions year-round. The Mara Triangle, in particular, is managed with lower vehicle density โ€” meaning your sightings are less likely to be shared with 12 other vehicles.

What Our Guests Say

โญโญโญโญโญ "The Flight Changed Everything"

I had done the road safari twice before. The flight was the right decision. We were in a Land Cruiser watching a cheetah hunt by 09:15 on Day 1. The camp on the Mara River was extraordinary โ€” hippos at dinner, lions audible at night. Wild Springs handled every transfer, every flight connection, every detail. Nothing was left to sort out by us.

โญโญโญโญโญ "Best Kenya Decision I Made"

The Diani-to-Mara route was seamless. Beach in the morning, lion sighting by 14:00, Mara River hippos at sundowners. Wild Springs arranged the Ukunda airstrip connection, the camp transfer, and the return to Nairobi without a single issue. I came back to Kenya for this exact trip two years later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the flight from Wilson Airport to the Masai Mara?

The scheduled flight time is 45 minutes. In practice, the flight hops between multiple airstrips in the Mara and you may be on board for 60 to 75 minutes depending on whether your airstrip is the second or fourth stop. You receive a colour-coded card at Wilson Airport check-in that identifies your stop. The additional time means additional views of the landscape and reserve from the aircraft โ€” not an inconvenience.

Which airlines fly from Wilson Airport to the Masai Mara?

Safarilink, Air Kenya, Governors' Aviation, and Fly ALS all operate scheduled daily flights from Wilson Airport to various Mara airstrips. Seasonal frequency varies โ€” July to October and December to March have daily direct flights on all routes. Wild Springs books the specific airline and airstrip routing to match your accommodation.

What is the baggage limit for Masai Mara flights?

15kg per person, soft bags only. This is a firm limit set by the airlines operating light aircraft on this route. Hard-shell suitcases cannot fit in the cargo holds of Cessna Caravan or similar aircraft used on these routes. Safarilink offers secure storage at Wilson Airport for approximately $5 per day. Most Nairobi hotels hold bags for free if you are returning to them.

Is flying to the Masai Mara safe?

Yes. Safarilink, Air Kenya, and Governors' Aviation are established Kenya carriers with strong safety records operating this route daily. The aircraft used are Cessna Caravan, Pilatus PC-12, and similar small turboprops certified for this route. Kenya Civil Aviation Authority regulates all operators.

What is the difference between the Mara Triangle and the main reserve?

The Masai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 square kilometres and is administered by Narok County Government. The Mara Triangle is the western section of the reserve, separated by the Mara River, and managed by the Mara Conservancy โ€” a non-profit organisation. The Triangle has stricter vehicle rules, better-maintained roads, lower vehicle density at sightings, and the best Mara River hippo viewing. The Musiara and Mara Serena airstrips serve the Triangle. Wild Springs recommends Triangle camps for photographers and small group fly-in safaris.

Can I combine the Masai Mara fly-in with Amboseli?

Yes โ€” Route 4 in this package does exactly this. You fly from Nairobi to Amboseli, spend 3 days photographing elephants against Kilimanjaro, then fly from Amboseli's Oltukai Airstrip directly to the Masai Mara for 3 days of Big Five and migration. No road between the two parks. Return from the Mara to Wilson Airport by scheduled flight. Wild Springs coordinates all bookings in one package.

Is the hot air balloon worth the additional cost?

For photographers and once-in-a-lifetime seekers, yes. The balloon departs before dawn from inside the reserve. You rise above the plains as the sun comes up. The herds below are visible from horizon to horizon. The flight lasts approximately 1 hour at $450 to $505 per person, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. It is significantly more expensive than your other game drives. It is also the photograph your Kenya friends will ask about for years. Book it the night before through Wild Springs โ€” we coordinate with the balloon operators.

How do I book the Masai Mara fly-in safari?

WhatsApp us at +254 729 257 317 with your preferred route (1, 2, 3, or 4), travel dates, group size, and accommodation preference (mid-range, upper mid-range, or luxury). We confirm availability, provide specific camp options for your dates, and send a full personalised quote within 2 hours. A 30% deposit confirms your booking. Balance due 21 days before departure.
