Our Summit Success Rates

Most Mount Kenya operators don't publish summit success figures. We do.

On our 5-day traverse, over 85% of trekkers reach Point Lenana. On the 4-day traverse, approximately 75%. On the 3-day option, around 60 to 65% for fit, experienced trekkers.

The single variable that explains those differences is not fitness. It is time at altitude.

More days above 3,500m mean more successful summits. That is why we recommend the 5-day. The acclimatisation day at Shipton's Camp makes a measurable difference. No sea-level training replicates it.

What a Mount Kenya Group Trek Actually Means

A group joining a trek means you book a single spot. You pay the group rate. You climb alongside other adventurers from around the world.

Your departure is guaranteed β€” even if you are the only one who books.

Pay your $100 deposit. The crew will be there. The mountain will be there. You will go.

Who This Trek Is For

🧍 Solo travelers β€” guaranteed departures without private rates. Nairobi to Lenana from $650.

πŸ‘© Solo female travelers β€” all-female groups available on request. Ask when booking.

πŸ‘« Pairs and small groups β€” share costs and meet fellow climbers from across the world.

🌍 International visitors β€” combining Mount Kenya with a Masai Mara safari or Kilimanjaro climb.

πŸƒ Kilimanjaro preparation trekkers β€” Point Lenana at 4,985m sits above Mont Blanc (4,808m). It is the best altitude preparation available for Kilimanjaro. Read our comparison guide.

🎯 Fit first-time high-altitude trekkers β€” ready for a serious but non-technical challenge.

πŸ“Œ Deposit: $100 per person. Confirmed. Guaranteed. The crew will be there.

Mount Kenya Climb Route Descriptions

πŸ”΅ 3-Day Sirimon Route - The Fast Option

For: Experienced trekkers with prior high-altitude exposure above 3,500m. Not for sea-level first-timers.

Summit probability: Moderate. The compressed acclimatisation window demands good baseline fitness.

The Sirimon Route enters Mount Kenya National Park from the northwest at Sirimon Gate (2,650m). It is the driest and most gradual approach. Two nights on the mountain precede the summit day. The night at Shipton's Camp (4,200m) serves as the only acclimatisation before the pre-dawn summit push.

Day 1: Nairobi β†’ Sirimon Gate (2,650m) β†’ Old Moses Camp (3,300m) | 9km | +650m | 4 hours on trail

Day 2: Old Moses β†’ Shipton's Camp (4,200m) via Mackinder's Valley viewpoint | 14km | +900m | 6 hours

Day 3: Summit push 03:00 from Shipton's β†’ Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise β†’ full descent β†’ Sirimon Gate β†’ Nairobi

🧭 This route is not recommended for trekkers arriving from sea level within the past 10 days. If this is your first time above 3,500m, choose the 5-day option. Read more in our best months to climb Mount Kenya guide.

🟀 3-Day Naro Moru Route - The Direct Approach

For: Trekkers based in or near Nairobi wanting the fastest route to Point Lenana.

Summit probability: Moderate. Steeper terrain than Sirimon. Shorter drive from Nairobi.

The Naro Moru Route is Kenya's oldest and most direct path to Point Lenana. It ascends from Naro Moru town on the western slopes. It is steep β€” particularly the "Vertical Bog" between 3,800m and 4,200m. It rewards with a fast, direct experience that suits experienced high-altitude hikers.

Day 1: Nairobi β†’ Naro Moru Gate (2,400m) β†’ Met Station (3,050m) | 4km | +650m

Day 2: Met Station β†’ Mackinder's Camp (4,200m) via the Vertical Bog | 9km | +1,150m | 6 hours

Day 3: Summit push 03:00 β†’ Point Lenana (4,985m) β†’ descend all day β†’ Naro Moru Gate β†’ Nairobi

🟒 4-Day Sirimon Up - Chogoria Down - The Most Booked Traverse

For: Fit first-timers and experienced trekkers who want the best value for time.

Summit probability: High. One extra night of altitude exposure makes a measurable difference over the 3-day.

This is Wild Springs Adventures' most popular group joining route. The gradual Sirimon ascent. The dramatic Chogoria descent. Lake Michaelson at 3,950m in a glacier-carved cirque. The Gorges Valley below. Four days that cover the best of both sides of the mountain.

Day 1: Nairobi β†’ Sirimon Gate β†’ Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

Day 2: Old Moses β†’ Shipton's Camp (4,200m) | Mackinder's Valley views, giant groundsel fields

Day 3: 03:00 summit push β†’ Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise β†’ descend east to Mintos Hut (4,300m) via Chogoria route

Day 4: Mintos β†’ Chogoria Gate via Lake Michaelson (3,950m), Gorges Valley, Nithi Falls β†’ transfer to Nairobi

Lake Michaelson sits inside the Gorges Valley with vertical walls dropping on three sides. There is no landscape quite like it on any other trekking route in East Africa.

🟑 4-Day Chogoria Up - Sirimon Down - The Most Scenic Traverse

For: Trekkers who prioritise scenery above all. Photographers. Return climbers.

Summit probability: High. The Chogoria ascent through alpine lakes builds excellent acclimatisation.

You enter the most dramatic side of the mountain first. Nithi Falls. Lake Ellis (3,490m). Lake Michaelson at 3,950m. The Gorges Valley. Then you summit from the east face of Point Lenana and descend the gentler Sirimon side. Every major scenic landmark arrives on the ascent. You have full energy to appreciate each one.

Day 1: Nairobi β†’ Chogoria Gate (2,960m) β†’ Lake Ellis Camp (3,490m)

Day 2: Lake Ellis β†’ Lake Michaelson (3,950m) via Gorges Valley

Day 3: 03:00 summit β†’ Point Lenana β†’ descend to Shipton's Camp via Sirimon route

Day 4: Shipton's β†’ Old Moses β†’ Sirimon Gate β†’ Nairobi

🟠 5-Day Sirimon Up β€” Chogoria Down β€” β˜… Most Recommended for First-Timers

For: All fitness levels, including first-time high-altitude trekkers.

Summit probability: Highest of all routes β€” over 85%.

This is the route Wild Springs Adventures recommends for anyone coming from sea level within the past two weeks. It is for anyone attempting their first trek above 4,000m. It is for anyone preparing for Kilimanjaro.

The additional night at Shipton's Camp (4,200m) is not passive rest. It is an active acclimatisation day. Your guide leads a hike to 4,700m and back. This measurably raises your oxygen saturation before the summit push. It is the single most effective summit preparation available on the mountain.

Day 1: Nairobi β†’ Sirimon Gate β†’ Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

Day 2: Old Moses β†’ Shipton's Camp (4,200m) via Mackinder's Valley

Day 3 β€” Acclimatisation: Guided hike above 4,500m from Shipton's β€” Harris Tarn area or Tooth Col approach β€” return to Shipton's. This day makes the difference.

Day 4: 03:00 summit push β†’ Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise β†’ descend to Mintos Hut via Chogoria

Day 5: Mintos β†’ Chogoria Gate via Lake Michaelson (3,950m), Gorges Valley, Nithi Falls β†’ Nairobi

Read our full hydration and nutrition guide to prepare your body for this itinerary.

πŸ”΄ 5-Day Chogoria Up β€” Sirimon Down β€” β˜… Maximum Scenery and Maximum Success

For: Experienced trekkers and photographers wanting every scenic highlight with the highest possible summit rate.

Summit probability: Highest. Three nights progressively above 3,400m before summit day.

You begin on Mount Kenya's most beautiful side. Every major scenic landmark β€” Nithi Falls, Lake Ellis, Lake Michaelson at 3,950m, the Gorges Valley, the Hall Tarns β€” arrives on the ascent when you have the energy to stop, look, and photograph.

Day 1: Nairobi β†’ Chogoria Gate β†’ Lake Ellis Camp (3,490m)

Day 2: Lake Ellis β†’ Lake Michaelson (3,950m) via Nithi Gorge viewpoints

Day 3 β€” Acclimatisation: Hall Tarns exploration (4,300m), optional Tooth Col approach to 4,700m β€” return to camp above Gorges Valley

Day 4: 03:00 summit push β†’ Point Lenana via Tooth Col β†’ descend to Shipton's Camp via Sirimon

Day 5: Shipton's β†’ Old Moses β†’ Sirimon Gate β†’ Nairobi

⚫ 6-Day Burguret–Chogoria β€” The Wilderness Route

For: Experienced, fit trekkers seeking genuine solitude. Not for beginners.

Summit probability: High for physically prepared trekkers with wilderness experience.

The Burguret Route ascends the western slopes through dense bamboo forest, montane cedar, and giant heather. This terrain is more used by elephants than humans. There are no huts on this side. No other operators. No mobile signal. Just the mountain, your crew, and the forest.

The Mountain Club of Kenya notes the western wilderness routes require genuine stamina and navigation awareness. We run this route only twice per month. That scarcity is part of what makes it special.

Day 1: Nairobi β†’ Nanyuki β†’ Gathiuru Forest Station β†’ Giant Bamboo Camp (2,600m). A 4-hour forest approach. Buffalo and elephant tracks are common here.

Day 2: Bamboo Camp β†’ podocarpus and cedar forest β†’ hagenia zone β†’ Highland Castle Camp (3,400m). The mountain opens dramatically at this point.

Day 3: Highland Castle β†’ Shipton's Camp (4,200m) via the summit circuit. Spectacular glacial tarn scenery. First views of Batian and Nelion's rock towers.

Day 4 β€” Acclimatisation: Explore above Shipton's β€” Harris Tarn, Austrian Hut area β€” return for early rest.

Day 5: 03:00 β†’ Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise β†’ descend via Chogoria to Hall Tarns (4,300m). Gorges Valley views.

Day 6: Hall Tarns β†’ Lake Michaelson (3,950m) β†’ Nithi Falls β†’ Chogoria Gate β†’ Nairobi.

⚠️ The Burguret Route requires proper expedition camping gear. Our Nairobi gear store and Mount Kenya gear checklist will ensure you are equipped before departure.

Our Ethical Mountain Crew - What Fair Tourism Looks Like

Every group trek supports:

βš–οΈ Above-market wages for every guide, porter, cook, and mountain crew member β€” paid on time, every trek

πŸŽ’ KWS-compliant load limits β€” no porter carries beyond the regulated maximum weight

β›Ί Proper crew shelter at every camp β€” crew sleep in quality tents, not exposed under plastic

🍲 Hot meals for crew at every camp β€” guides and porters eat properly. An exhausted crew cannot keep climbers safe.

πŸŽ“ Youth guide development β€” we actively train the next generation of Mount Kenya guides from Nanyuki and Chogoria communities

♻️ Leave No Trace principles β€” all waste carried off the mountain, reusable water bottles provided, single-use plastics eliminated

🌿 Aligned with KWS conservation goals β€” park fees paid promptly, regulations followed without exception

When you book a group trek with Wild Springs Adventures, the guides leading you are not freelancers hired for your trip. They are part of a permanent team with career paths and fair wages. That is not standard in Kenya's mountain guiding industry. It is how we operate.

Not Ready Yet? Build Up With Our Training Programme

Wild Springs Adventures operates the Mount Kenya Fitness Training Programme β€” the only guided pre-summit training programme offered by any Kenyan tour operator.

The programme uses the Aberdares, Ngong Hills, and Rurimeria Peak to progressively build your aerobic capacity, leg strength, and altitude tolerance. Participants who could not hike for more than two hours have gone on to summit Point Lenana β€” and then Kilimanjaro.

Gear - Equip Yourself Properly in Nairobi

Mandatory gear that most trekkers underestimate:

Sleeping bag rated to -15Β°C β€” below this, summit night becomes genuinely miserable.

Down or synthetic insulated jacket β€” a fleece alone is not enough above 4,500m in the dark.

Waterproof boots β€” ankle support and waterproofed material. Not trail runners.

Waterproof outer layer β€” jacket and trousers both.

Trekking poles β€” strongly recommended, especially for the descent.

Wild Springs Adventures Outdoor Gear Store in Nairobi's Parklands stocks all of the above β€” new, gently used, and rental. If your luggage is delayed or lost in transit, we have kitted trekkers from scratch on departure morning. Do not cancel your climb over missing luggage. Call us first.

Read the complete Mount Kenya gear checklist and mental preparation guide before your trek.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mount Kenya safe for beginners?

Yes β€” with the right route, correct gear, and realistic fitness preparation. Point Lenana (4,985m) requires no technical climbing. You need cardiovascular fitness, the right equipment, and enough days on the mountain to acclimatise. The 5-day traverse consistently delivers the highest success rates for first-time high-altitude trekkers. Minimum 3 months of consistent cardio training before your summit attempt. If you need help, our Mount Kenya Fitness Training Programme takes you from beginner to summit-ready.

Will my departure run if I am the only person who books?

Yes. Your confirmed deposit guarantees your departure regardless of how many others join. You will not be bumped, rescheduled, or refunded. The crew will be there. The trek will run.

What is the summit success rate?

On our 5-day treks, summit success consistently exceeds 85%. On 4-day treks, approximately 75%. On 3-day treks, around 60 to 65% for fit, experienced trekkers. The single most important factor in reaching Point Lenana is not fitness β€” it is sufficient time at altitude. Read our acclimatisation strategy guide to understand what happens to your body above 3,500m.

Will I have the same quality of crew on a group trek as on a private one?

Yes. The same KWS-certified guides, the same experienced porters, the same mountain chef lead both private and group departures. The only difference is that you share logistics costs with other climbers. Crew quality, equipment standard, and guide-to-trekker ratio are identical. We do not operate a "budget crew" for groups and a "premium crew" for private trips. That is not how we work.

Can I climb Mount Kenya on a full moon?

Yes β€” and it changes the summit experience completely. Summiting Point Lenana on a full moon night means climbing the final 685m in near-daylight. No headlamp glare. The Lewis Glacier is visible below you. The Nanyuki plains extend to the west. In July and August, Kilimanjaro sometimes appears on the southern horizon at dawn. Tell us your preferred travel window and we align your summit night with the lunar calendar. See the full moon dates table above.

What is altitude sickness, and how do you manage it?

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is caused by reduced oxygen pressure at altitude. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fatigue, and disrupted sleep. Our guides carry pulse oximeters and conduct oxygen saturation checks at every camp morning and evening. The acclimatisation day on 5-day treks is the most effective prevention tool. Any trekker showing serious AMS signs descends immediately β€” no exceptions, no debates.

What are the best months to climb Mount Kenya?

The two dry seasons β€” January to March and June to October β€” offer the clearest skies, most stable trails, and best summit visibility. These are our busiest periods. November and April to May are climbable with proper waterproofs and carry lower crowds and more open rates. The mountain is never fully closed. Read the full seasonal guide.

How do I get to the trailheads?

Your group trek price includes return road transport from Nairobi. We collect you from your hotel or a central Nairobi meeting point. The drive to Sirimon Gate takes 3.5 hours. Chogoria Gate takes 4.5 hours. For independent arrangements, see our guide to getting to Mount Kenya.

Can I upgrade to a private trek?

Yes β€” every date in the calendar is available as a private departure. For solo travelers, couples, families, or groups wanting a dedicated crew and flexible pace. Private trek prices are in the comparison table above. Contact us for a custom quote.

What equipment is provided?

We provide camping tents (2 per tent sharing), sleeping mats, a mess tent, cooking equipment, and all crew equipment. You bring your personal sleeping bag (-15Β°C rated), clothing, and daypack. All required gear is available to rent or purchase at our Nairobi outdoor store. Lost or delayed luggage is not a reason to cancel β€” call us first.

Can I combine Mount Kenya with a Kilimanjaro climb?

Yes. Mount Kenya is the best Kilimanjaro preparation available β€” same altitude range, shorter duration, lower cost. Our recommended itinerary: Mount Kenya 5-day group trek β†’ 2 rest days in Nairobi β†’ 7-day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route. Contact us to plan both in one booking.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes β€” mandatory. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking to at least 5,000m and emergency helicopter evacuation. Standard travel insurance often excludes mountain trekking. Read your policy carefully before booking.
