π£Lake Michaelson Fly Fishing Mountain Safari
Safari at a Glance
Wild Springs Adventures Β· Nairobi-Based Mount Kenya Fly Fishing Safari Specialists Since 2013
Africa's Most Dramatic Fly Fishing Destination
Lake Michaelson is not simply a high-altitude trout lake. It is a glacially carved amphitheatre β a 30-acre body of impossibly blue water enclosed on three sides by 200-metre vertical cliff walls called The Temple, sitting at 3,950 metres above sea level inside the Gorges Valley on Mount Kenya's eastern slopes.
The lake feeds the Nithi River and was named during Halford Mackinder's 1899 expedition β the same expedition that made the first recorded ascent of Batian, Mount Kenya's highest peak. The trout arrived later: rainbow trout were introduced to Mount Kenya's highland lakes and streams by British settlers in the early 20th century, and since then, a handful of custom local fly patterns β the Kenya Bug and the Mrs. Simpson β have been specifically developed for these mountain waters.
The trout at Lake Michaelson are a wild, self-sustaining population. They breed naturally in the glacial water, fed by the chironomid midges, caddisflies, and mayflies that emerge in the warm midday windows of the high Gorges Valley. Specialist fly fishing guides describe them as aggressive feeders that will take almost any well-presented fly β but they live at 3,950 metres, accessible only by a demanding multi-hour trek through one of Africa's most spectacular mountain landscapes.
Wild Springs Adventures is one of the very few Nairobi-based operators offering the Lake Michaelson fly fishing safari as a structured, properly guided package β combining mountain expedition expertise refined across six Mount Kenya trekking routes with specialist fly fishing knowledge. No competitor currently packages this experience with the same depth, honesty, and logistics precision.

The Route to Lake Michaelson
The Lake Michaelson fly fishing safari is a genuine alpine expedition. The journey itself β through the Gorges Valley, past Vivienne Falls, alongside the Nithi River β is as extraordinary as the lake. Here is the exact route with altitudes.
| Stage | Altitude | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ποΈ Nairobi departure | 1,661m | 5 to 6-hour drive east via Embu and Chogoria Town |
| πͺ Chogoria Gate | 2,950m | KWS fees, permits, and guide β all managed by Wild Springs |
| π 4x4 to Lake Ellis roadhead | 3,470m | Highest point accessible by vehicle β 1 hour from gate |
| π§ Lake Ellis acclimatisation stop | 3,470m | Mandatory 45 to 60 minute stop β optional fishing |
| π Gorges Valley ridge traverse | 3,700m to 4,000m | Vivienne Falls visible below β peak views of Batian, Nelion, Lenana |
| π£ Lake Michaelson β CAMP | 3,950m | The Temple cliff walls β wild rainbow trout |
Wild Springs strongly recommends overnighting in Chogoria town (approximately 1,700m) the evening before Day 1. This pre-acclimatisation reduces altitude sickness risk significantly on the lake approach. Ask us to arrange this when booking.
Full Itinerary β 2 Days, 1 Night
Day 1 β The Long Drive, the Gorges Valley, and the First Evening Cast
04:00 β Nairobi Departure
An early start is essential. Your Wild Springs guide and driver collect you from your Nairobi hotel. The drive east and north takes 5 to 6 hours, passing through Embu and Chogoria Town β where a brief provisioning stop is made β before ascending to the Chogoria Gate entrance of Mount Kenya National Park.
If you did not overnight in Chogoria town the evening before, the 04:00 departure gets you to the lake by late afternoon with time for the most important fishing session of the day.
10:00 β Chogoria Gate (2,950m) β Park Entry
All KWS park fees, camping fees, fishing line fees, and Department of Fisheries fishing licences are handled by your Wild Springs guide at the gate. No surprises. The gate sits at approximately 2,950m β already 1,300m above Nairobi. Take it slowly, drink water.
10:30 β 4x4 to Lake Ellis Roadhead (3,470m)
The 4x4 climbs the Chogoria track through montane forest, bamboo zones, and open heather moorland β one of the finest approach roads on the mountain. The track ends near Lake Ellis at 3,470m, the highest point accessible by vehicle on the eastern side of Mount Kenya. Mount Kenya holds over 30 crater lakes and tarns β Lake Ellis is the gateway to the finest of them.
11:30 β Lake Ellis Acclimatisation and Optional Fishing (3,470m)
Lake Ellis is a 28-acre moorland lake in its own right β rainbow trout up to 8 lbs have been recorded here. Wild Springs builds a mandatory 45-minute to 1-hour Lake Ellis stop into every Lake Michaelson fly fishing safari as acclimatisation and, for those who choose to, a first fishing session before the main push.
This stop is not optional. At 3,470m, your body needs time to begin adjusting to the altitude before you add another 480 vertical metres on foot. The trout at Lake Ellis are a bonus.
13:00 β The Gorges Valley Trek to Lake Michaelson (4 to 6 hours)
The hike from Lake Ellis to Lake Michaelson is widely described by those who have done it as the finest single day's walk on Mount Kenya. The route rises along the sweep of the Gorges Valley. Vivienne Falls appears in the distance, cascading into the gorge below. The ridgeline above 4,000m offers views across to Batian (5,199m), Nelion (5,188m), and Lenana (4,985m) β three of Africa's most dramatic peaks visible simultaneously.
Giant lobelia and groundsel colonies line the trail above 3,800m. The path descends sharply into the crater-like basin where Lake Michaelson lies hidden until the final ridge β and then, suddenly, 200 metres below you, the jade-turquoise lake appears inside its cliff amphitheatre.
17:00 β Arrive Lake Michaelson (3,950m) β Camp Setup and First Evening Cast
The KWS campsite sits beside the lake shore at the base of The Temple cliff walls. While camp is being established by the porter team, evening fishing begins. This is the prime trout feeding window β as the light drops below the cliff walls, the surface comes alive. Wild rainbow trout at Lake Michaelson are at their most active in the last two hours of light.
A well-placed dry fly or emerger on the surface at this hour is the most rewarding cast of the entire safari.
Altitude note: Lake Michaelson at 3,950m requires respect. Rest for 20 to 30 minutes on arrival before fishing. Mild headache or shortness of breath is normal at this altitude. Your guide monitors all participants, carries altitude medication, and holds supplemental oxygen.
19:30 β Dinner at the Lake
Camp dinner prepared by the Wild Springs guide. If you caught fish in the evening session, the guide prepares a lake-to-plate trout dinner β simple, extraordinary, remembered for years. The campfire is prohibited above the forest zone per KWS regulation. Bring warm layers and a thermos. The temperature at 3,950m after sunset is between -2Β°C and +5Β°C. The stars above The Temple cliffs are extraordinary.
Day 2 β Dawn Fishing, Sunrise on The Temple Walls, and Return to Nairobi
05:30 β Pre-Dawn Coffee and the First Cast
This is why you came. The 06:00 to 08:30 window is the finest fly fishing of the entire Lake Michaelson fly fishing mountain safari β cold, still water, feeding trout, and The Temple cliffs transitioning from shadow to gold as the dawn light reaches the valley floor. Your guide identifies fish feeding on the surface. Dry fly fishing in this light, at this altitude, in this landscape, is genuinely unlike anything available elsewhere in East Africa.
08:30 β Breakfast at the Lake
Hot breakfast. Take photographs. Look at what you have earned by getting here.
10:00 β Final Fishing Session or Summit Extension
For trekkers with energy remaining, the trail continues from Lake Michaelson toward Simba Tarn and the summit approach for Point Lenana. Ask Wild Springs about the Fish and Summit extension β two days at Lake Michaelson followed by the full Chogoria Route summit climb.
For those returning today, a final fishing session runs from 10:00 to 11:00 in the morning midday window β nymph and chironomid patterns work best at this hour.
11:00 β Pack and Begin the Ascent Out
The climb out of the lake basin is the day's physical demand β steep ascent back to the Gorges Valley ridge. Your guide leads at an appropriate pace. The descent from the ridge to Lake Ellis and the 4x4 takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.
Nairobi arrival: Approximately 19:00 to 20:00.
π½οΈ Meals: Day 1 Dinner β Day 2 Breakfast and Midday Lunch
Wild Rainbow Trout at 3,950 Metres β The Fishing
The rainbow trout of Lake Michaelson are not managed fish. They are a self-sustaining wild population that breeds naturally in the glacial water of the Gorges Valley, fed by the unique high-altitude insect life of the moorland above 3,800m β chironomids, caddis, and mayfly that emerge in the warm windows of the alpine day.
Average fish run 1 to 3 lbs. Fish of 5 to 8 lbs are present and catchable. Because the lake receives minimal fishing pressure β only those who complete the demanding approach trek ever cast here β the trout are confident, surface-oriented feeders that respond strongly to a well-placed dry fly, particularly in the dawn and evening windows.
An Into Fly Fishing specialist, Kenya guide describes the lake as: "about as beautiful as it gets β and teaming with fish that will eat almost any fly." This is honest.
Wild Springs strongly encourages catch and release on Lake Michaelson to protect the wild population. If you wish to keep a fish for the campfire dinner, the fishing licence allows this within the bag limit. Your guide advises on handling, dispatch, and preparation.
Recommended Fly Patterns β Lake Michaelson Specific
These patterns are calibrated to Lake Michaelson's specific conditions β the altitude, the insect life, the water temperature, and the way the trout feed inside a natural amphitheatre with limited surface disturbance. Kenya Bug and Mrs. Simpson are locally developed patterns available at the Wild Springs Outdoor Store.

| Evening | Stimulator | 12 to 14 | Dry β large profile, last-light visibility |
| Evening | Viva Streamer | 8 to 10 | Streamer β stripped fast for big fish |
β Kenya Bug and Mrs. Simpson are patterns developed specifically for Kenyan mountain trout. Both are available at the Wild Springs Outdoor Store.

What Our Guests Say
βββββ "The Most Memorable Fishing of My Life β At 3,950 Metres."
I have fished in Patagonia, in Iceland, and on the Test in Hampshire. Lake Michaelson is different from all of them. Not because the fish are bigger β they are not. But because you earn every cast by trekking through one of Africa's most extraordinary mountain landscapes to get there. The evening rise in the shadow of The Temple cliffs, with the lake turning gold and the trout coming up to the surface β there is nothing quite like it. Wild Springs handled every logistical detail, the guide knew exactly where the fish were holding, and the Kenya Bug pattern they recommended from their gear store was the fly of the day. Book this. Do not hesitate.- Verified Fly Fisher, United Kingdom Β· TripAdvisor β
βββββ "The Guide Knew the Lake Better Than the Fish."
Our Wild Springs guide positioned us at the north shore in the evening and told us exactly what pattern to use and where to cast. First fish in 20 minutes. We kept one for dinner β the guide cooked it over the camp stove with a lemon from his pack β and released everything else. Professional, well-organised, outstanding.- Verified Angler, Nairobi Expat Β· TripAdvisor β
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Lake Michaelson different from Lake Ellis, Lake Alice, or Lake Rutundu for fly fishing?
Lake Michaelson is the most remote, most dramatic, and most rewarding of Mount Kenya's four main fishing lakes. The 4 to 6 hour approach trek from Lake Ellis eliminates casual day visitors β only those who commit to the full expedition ever cast here. The result is fishing pressure so low that the trout respond aggressively to almost any well-presented fly. Lake Ellis is accessible by 4Γ4 and therefore receives more pressure. Lake Alice and Lake Rutundu are accessible in under an hour from the car park. Lake Michaelson requires the full wilderness commitment β which is precisely what makes it the finest experience of the four.
Is fly fishing experience required?
No previous fly fishing experience is required. The trout at Lake Michaelson are described by specialists as feeding aggressively at almost any fly β which means beginner casters can catch fish with straightforward instruction from your guide. Experienced fly fishers will have access to the specific lake-calibrated patterns and techniques in the fly pattern table above. Wild Springs provides basic rod and fly selection. Experienced anglers should bring their own preferred gear.
How physically demanding is the trek to Lake Michaelson?
Challenging but achievable for fit trekkers. The approach involves 12 to 15km of mountain hiking with approximately 500m of altitude gain from Lake Ellis. The trail includes a steep descent into the lake basin that requires concentration on loose scree. Total trekking time is 4 to 6 hours. Prior hiking experience above 3,000m is strongly recommended. The Lake Ellis acclimatisation stop is mandatory β it is not optional, regardless of how fit you feel.
Is a fishing licence required, and how is it arranged?
Yes. Two permits are required: a Department of Fisheries fishing licence and a KWS fishing line fee (KES 1,550 per line per day). Wild Springs Adventures arranges both permits with 7 days advance notice as part of the package. This is a KWS requirement β fishing without the correct permits risks a significant fine and potential expulsion from the park. Factor the 7-day notice requirement into your booking date.
Can I combine the Lake Michaelson fishing safari with a Mount Kenya summit attempt?
Yes β and this is one of the most rewarding extended itineraries Wild Springs operates. The Fish and Summit combination adds the full Chogoria Route summit climb to Point Lenana (4,985m) after the 2-day Lake Michaelson fishing safari. The extra acclimatisation from the lake camp nights significantly improves summit success probability. Contact us for the combined itinerary quote.
How cold is it at Lake Michaelson overnight?
Night temperatures at Lake Michaelson (3,950m) range from -2Β°C to +5Β°C on clear nights and lower with wind chill. A sleeping bag rated to -15Β°C minimum is required β not recommended, required. A -5Β°C or -10Β°C bag is insufficient for this altitude and wind exposure. Sleeping bag rental is available at the Wild Springs Outdoor Store in Parklands Nairobi β reserve at booking.
Is altitude sickness a concern at Lake Michaelson?
Yes β and it is managed carefully. At 3,950m, mild altitude symptoms, including headache and shortness of breath are normal. The Lake Ellis acclimatisation stop is specifically designed to reduce the severity of symptoms on arrival at the lake. Your guide carries altitude medication and supplemental oxygen. AMREF Flying Doctors' emergency evacuation cover is included for all 2 days. If you have a history of altitude illness, consult your doctor about Diamox before departure.
What is the Fish and Summit combination itinerary?
The Fish and Summit itinerary extends the 2-day Lake Michaelson fishing safari into a full Mount Kenya summit climb via the Chogoria Route. After 2 nights at Lake Michaelson, the route continues to Mintos Hut (Hall Tarns) and then to Point Lenana (4,985m) for sunrise β completing the finest combined fishing and mountaineering itinerary available in East Africa. Contact us for dates, pricing, and the detailed combined itinerary.
Our Commitments at Lake Michaelson
Leave No Trace β Protecting a Wild Trout Lake
Lake Michaelson's wild trout population survives because the lake receives minimal fishing pressure. Wild Springs applies strict Leave No Trace protocols on every safari: all waste is carried out in sealed bags, no fires above the forest zone, catch and release is encouraged, and the campsite is left in pristine condition. The KWS Lake Michaelson campsite regulations are followed exactly. We operate here with the understanding that our presence is a privilege.
Fair Remuneration
Every porter, guide, and driver is paid above the Kenya tourism industry standard. The porters who carry camping equipment across 12km of mountain terrain at altitude are paid fairly for exceptional physical labour in a remote wilderness environment. This is reflected in the package price and is non-negotiable.
