Safari at a Glance

Safari Highlight

Climb Mount Kenya by its most beautiful trail. This private 6-day expedition ascends the legendary Chogoria route - past Nithi Falls, Lake Ellis, the Gorges Valley, and the jewel-like Lake Michaelson - then descends the gentler Sirimon route, summiting Point Lenana (4,985 m / 16,355 ft) at sunrise. It is designed for adventurers who want time to acclimatize properly, the privacy of their own departure, and the space to slow down and soak in the finest mountain scenery in East Africa.

⭐ Key takeaways

  • Route: Chogoria (ascent) β†’ Point Lenana β†’ Sirimon (descent) - a full traverse, never retracing your steps.
  • Why it's special: Widely regarded as the most scenic route on Mount Kenya, climbed slowly over 6 days for the highest comfort and summit success.
  • Best for: Independent adventurers, couples, photographers and small private groups who value acclimatization, scenery and a private experience.

✨ Why choose the 6-day Chogoria-Sirimon traverse?

Most operators rush the Chogoria route as a quick descent. We do the opposite - we climb it slowly, so you experience its waterfalls, alpine lakes and the dramatic Gorges Valley at a relaxed pace, while your body adjusts gently to the altitude.

  • πŸ† The most scenic route on Mount Kenya. The Chogoria trail is consistently rated the mountain's most beautiful approach, threading the Gorges Valley past Lake Michaelson and the towering cliff known as The Temple.
  • 🫁 Maximum acclimatization. Six unhurried days, plus a deliberate "climb high, sleep low" profile (a higher-altitude test on Day 2, a high camp at the Austrian Hut before summit) markedly improve how you feel - and your odds of standing on Point Lenana at sunrise.
  • πŸ”’ A private experience. This is your own departure: your own guide, your own pace, no fixed group. Set off when you like, linger where you wish, and pause for photographs without compromise.
  • 🦡 A kinder descent. Finishing down the gradual Sirimon route is far easier on the knees than descending the steep Chogoria side.
  • πŸŒ… A short, high-success summit push. Camping high at the Austrian Hut (4,790 m) leaves only a short climb to the summit for sunrise.

🎯 Is this trek right for you?

This private Chogoria expedition is ideal if you:

  • Want more time to acclimatize and a higher chance of summiting comfortably.
  • Value a private, flexible trip over a fixed group schedule.
  • Are a scenery lover or photographer who wants the mountain's finest landscapes - and time to enjoy them.
  • Are reasonably fit and willing to prepare (the route is non-technical, but the days are long and the air is thin).

No previous high-altitude experience is required - our six-day profile and professional crew do the heavy lifting. You simply need to arrive fit and ready to walk.

πŸ—“οΈ Day-by-day itinerary

πŸš— Day 1 - Nairobi β†’ Chogoria Gate β†’ Meru Bandas (~3,000 m)

Drive from Nairobi through Kenya's lush central highlands to Chogoria town, then up to the Chogoria park gate. After registration, settle in at the Meru Bandas - the only built accommodation on this side of the mountain - and take a gentle walk to enjoy the scenery and begin acclimatizing.

Drive ~5–6 hrs, short walk Β· Overnight: Meru Bandas.

πŸ’§ Day 2 - Chogoria Gate β†’ Nithi Falls β†’ Mugi Hill β†’ Lake Ellis (3,455 m)

A spectacular day. Detour to the roaring Nithi Waterfalls and their caves, reach the viewpoint that opens up the Gorges Valley, then climb Mugi Hill - a deliberate higher-altitude test, with views of the curious flat-topped Giant's Billiard Table. Descend to camp on the shore of beautiful Lake Ellis, one of the finest campsites on the mountain, beneath a sky thick with stars.

Trek ~4–5 hrs Β· Overnight: Lake Ellis (camping).

🏞️ Day 3 - Lake Ellis β†’ Lake Michaelson or Mintos Camp

Cross the Nithi River with Lake Ellis and Mugi Hill behind you, and the peaks now close ahead.

  • Option A (recommended): Lake Michaelson (3,950 m). Descend into the Gorges Valley to Lake Michaelson - locally known as Lake Kamau - a jewel of a lake set in a glacial amphitheatre beneath the sheer cliff called The Temple. The descent is steep and unhurried, so we allow plenty of time. Arrive early, and you can visit the Temple itself.

  • Option B: Mintos Camp (4,200 m). If time or energy doesn't favour going to Lake Michaelson, finish at Mintos Camp beside the Hall Tarns, with an evening walk to the Gorges Valley viewpoint for a dramatic aerial view of Lake Michaelson.

Trek ~5–6 hrs Β· Overnight: Lake Michaelson or Mintos (camping). Read more about the mountain's lakes in our Mount Kenya Lakes & Tarns Guide.

⛰️ Day 4 - To the Austrian Hut (4,790 m), the high camp

Ascend past the Hall Tarns and traverse beneath huge rock walls - via Square Tarn and the Tooth Col - to the Austrian Hut, the highest camp on the mountain, on the Naro Moru side.

This day both acclimatizes you and takes you part-way around the peaks, with views toward Mackinder's Camp and the dramatic western face of Batian and Nelion.

Trek ~4–5 hrs, +~500 m Β· Overnight: Austrian Hut (camping).

πŸŒ„ Day 5 - Summit Point Lenana (4,985 m) β†’ descend to Old Moses (3,300 m)

An early start for the short summit push to Point Lenana, timed for sunrise over the peaks and equatorial glaciers - the highest point trekkers reach on Mount Kenya.

After your summit photos, descend the Sirimon side to Shipton's Camp for a hearty breakfast, then continue gently down to Old Moses Camp

An optional hut upgrade is available here at your own cost.

Summit + descent ~7–9 hrs Β· Overnight: Old Moses (tent; hut upgrade optional).

🏁 Day 6 - Old Moses β†’ Sirimon Gate (2,650 m) β†’ Nairobi

A final, gentle forest walk down to the Sirimon Gate, where you thank and tip your mountain crew before connecting with your transport back to Nairobi.

Feeling tired? You can be collected by vehicle at Old Moses rather than walking to the gate - just let your guide know.

Trek ~9 km, 2–3 hrs (or vehicle from Old Moses), then drive Β· Trip ends in Nairobi.

🫁 Acclimatization & summit success

Altitude - not fitness alone - is what turns trekkers back on Mount Kenya. Our 6-day Chogoria itinerary is built around the principle that slow is fast:

  • A gradual ascent profile from ~3,000 m to the 4,985 m summit over five nights.
  • A built-in "climb high, sleep low" rhythm (the Mugi Hill test on Day 2; the high camp at the Austrian Hut before summit night).
  • A short final summit push from 4,790 m, so you reach the top fresher and in time for sunrise.

On the mountain, drink plenty of water, eat well even when appetite fades, walk pole pole (slowly), and tell your guide about any headache or nausea early. Your KWS-certified guide monitors the group throughout and carries first-aid and safety equipment.

🌦️ Best time to climb Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya has two dry-season windows, both excellent for this trek:

  • January–February - the first dry window of the year: clear, dry, with superb visibility and fewer crowds.
  • July–October - the long dry season and the busiest, most reliable climbing period.

The mountain "makes its own weather": mornings are usually clear with mist building from around 10 a.m., which is exactly why summit and scenic days start early. For a month-by-month breakdown, see our guide to the best months to climb Mount Kenya.

πŸŽ’ Fitness & preparation - start early

Good preparation is the single biggest factor (after acclimatization) in enjoying this trek and reaching the summit. We recommend starting two to three months ahead:

  • πŸƒ Build an aerobic base: 3–4 sessions a week of brisk walking, jogging, cycling, or swimming.
  • πŸ₯Ύ Train with a loaded daypack on hills and stairs - the closest simulation of mountain days.
  • 🦡 Strengthen legs and core (squats, lunges, step-ups) to protect your knees on the long descents.
  • πŸ” Practise back-to-back days - a long walk two days running teaches your body to recover and keep going.
  • πŸ‘’ Break in your boots and test your warm layers in cold, wet conditions before you travel.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Chogoria route on Mount Kenya?

It is a moderate, non-technical trek - no ropes or climbing skills are needed to reach Point Lenana. The challenge comes from long walking days and high altitude. With our 6-day acclimatization profile and reasonable fitness, most healthy trekkers reach the summit.

Why is Chogoria considered the most scenic route on Mount Kenya?

Because it passes the mountain's finest features in a single trail: Nithi Falls, Lake Ellis, the Gorges Valley, Lake Michaelson and The Temple, and the Hall Tarns. No other route on Mount Kenya offers this concentration of waterfalls, alpine lakes, and dramatic valley scenery.

How high is Point Lenana, and is it the true summit?

Point Lenana stands at 4,985 m (16,355 ft) and is the trekking summit of Mount Kenya. The two higher peaks - Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m) - are technical rock climbs requiring mountaineering skills, so trekkers aim for Point Lenana.

When is the best time to climb?

The two dry seasons: January-February and July-October. Both offer clearer skies, safer trails, and better summit views. January-February is warmer and quieter; July-October is the busiest, most reliable window.

Do I need a guide to climb Mount Kenya?

Yes. Kenya Wildlife Service requires all trekkers to register and climb with a certified guide. Independent/solo trekking is not permitted. All Wild Springs treks include a KWS-certified guide and full crew.

Where do we sleep, and is it camping or huts?

The Chogoria side has no huts, so you camp in quality 4-season tents (with mats, mess tent, and full crew support). The first night is at the Meru Bandas at the gate, and on the Sirimon descent, you may upgrade to a hut at Old Moses at your own cost.

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?

Yes - a warm 4-season sleeping bag is the one item not included. Bring your own, or hire a quality bag from our Nairobi gear store.

How fit do I need to be, and do I need altitude experience?

You should be able to walk for several hours on consecutive days. No prior altitude experience is required β€” our six-day itinerary is built to acclimatize you. Start training two to three months before your climb.

Can residents and citizens of Kenya book this trek?

Absolutely. Kenya Wildlife Service park fees differ by residency, so we offer dedicated citizen and resident rates alongside the international rate. Please carry valid ID for the park gate.

What happens if the weather is bad on summit day?

Mount Kenya makes its own weather, and your guide makes the final summit call based on conditions for your safety. Summit pushes start before dawn to reach the top while skies are clearest.
