๐ŸŒพ The Northern Aberdares in One Concentrated Push

The northern Aberdare moorland is the most dramatic section of the entire range โ€” open, vast, boulder-strewn, and home to the highest peaks. The Dragon's Teeth. Ol Donyo Lesatima at 4,001m. Rhino Hill above Seven Ponds. Table Mountain's flat walkable plateau. Seven Ponds glacial tarns. Rurimeria's strenuous ridge. All within a 38km arc of connected moorland above 3,400m.

The Full North-South Traverse crosses all of this and continues south for two more days. This traverse takes the northern section and walks it as a focused, intense, 2-to-3-day objective โ€” entering at Twin Rocks, summiting the full northern ridge, camping on Table Mountain's plateau, then pushing south through Seven Ponds and over Rurimeria before descending.

It is Kenya's most concentrated high-altitude multi-day moorland experience. For very fit hikers only. The daily distances and elevation changes are serious even by Aberdare expedition standards. There is no gentle day.

๐ŸŽฏ Who this traverse is for:

Hikers who have completed at least two serious Aberdare day hikes above 3,500m, are confident with altitude, and want a compressed, high-intensity northern moorland experience without the 5-day commitment of the full traverse. This is the fast line through the best section of the range.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Itinerary

โ›บ Day 1 ยท Twin Rocks โ†’ Dragon's Teeth โ†’ Satima โ†’ Rhino Hill โ†’ Table Mountain Camp

Distance: ~21km ยท High: 4,001m ยท Camp: 3,817m ยท Time: 9โ€“10 hours

05:00 ยท Nairobi Departure

Drive to Shamata or Rhino Gate (~3 hours) then the 11km park road to Twin Rocks. Entry by 08:30. Porters loaded. Trail begins.

06:00 ยท Twin Rocks Trailhead (3,387m)

Already at altitude. Open moorland from the first step. The trail heads south.

08:00 ยท ๐Ÿ‰ Dragon's Teeth ยท ~3,750m

The volcanic trachyte corridor โ€” the most dramatic geological feature on any Kenyan hiking trail. On this traverse it is the opening section, not the summit destination. Pass through Dragon's Pass, photograph the spires, keep moving south.

10:30 ยท ๐Ÿ… Satima ยท 4,001m โ€” Kenya's 3rd Highest Mountain

The traverse's highest point and its most significant summit. Summit lunch here โ€” thirty minutes minimum. The full northern ridge visible to the north (Dragon's Teeth, the approach moorland) and the remaining traverse visible to the south (Rhino Hill, Table Mountain, Seven Ponds, Rurimeria).

12:30 ยท ๐Ÿฆ Rhino Hill ยท ~3,890m โ€” The Hidden Summit

The guide-named peak between Satima and Table Mountain, visible as a rhinoceros-shaped rocky silhouette from the moorland below. No formal trail, no markers โ€” guide-led across open bog. Named by local guides who cross this section repeatedly. Combining Satima and Rhino Hill in a single day is what separates this traverse from any existing day-hike package.

15:30 ยท ๐Ÿ—ป Table Mountain Plateau ยท 3,817m โ€” Camp 1

The flat walkable summit plateau where cliff edges on three sides reveal plunging valleys that were invisible during the ascent. The porter team has the camp set. Hot dinner cooked by the field chef. The group sleeps on a named Aberdare peak.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Camp 1 ยท Table Mountain Plateau ยท 3,817m ยท 5โ€“8ยฐC overnight

โ›บ Day 2 (Standard) / Day 2โ€“3 (Extended) ยท Table Mountain โ†’ Seven Ponds โ†’ Rurimeria โ†’ Descent

Option A โ€” Standard (2-Day): Full Day to Descent โ€” ~17km โ€” 7โ€“9 hours

06:00 ยท Table Mountain โ†’ Seven Ponds (09:00) โ†’ Rurimeria Ascent โ†’ Summit (13:00) โ†’ Descent

From the Table Mountain plateau, the traverse crosses east to the Seven Ponds glacial tarn field โ€” seven ancient tarn lakes reflecting the morning sky at 3,826m. Rest here. Then the ascent to Rurimeria (3,860m) โ€” the traverse's hardest single section, a steep moorland ridge climb with 1,030m of gain from the morning's start point. Summit by 13:00. Descend south to the Kwa Matu gate via the established Rurimeria or Table Mountain trail. Back in Nairobi by 21:00.

โš ๏ธ This is an extremely demanding second day. Covering Seven Ponds, Rurimeria, and the full descent in one push โ€” after a demanding Day 1 โ€” is reserved for hikers with exceptional fitness and strong altitude tolerance.

Option B โ€” Extended (3-Day) โ€” RECOMMENDED

Day 2 ยท Table Mountain โ†’ Seven Ponds โ†’ Camp 2 ยท ~10km ยท 5โ€“6 hours

A more considered second day. After breakfast on the plateau, cross to Seven Ponds (3,826m) โ€” rest among the glacial tarns, eat lunch, explore the plateau. Then establish Camp 2 near Seven Ponds or at a sheltered moorland location below Rurimeria's ridge.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Camp 2 ยท Seven Ponds area or below Rurimeria ยท ~3,400โ€“3,600m

Day 3 ยท Rurimeria Ascent โ†’ Summit โ†’ Descent โ†’ Nairobi ยท ~10km ยท 6โ€“7 hours

Fresh legs for the Rurimeria section. Early start, summit by 11:00 from the Seven Ponds camp. Then the descent south via the Geta Bush or Kwa Matu trail to the electric fence gate and the vehicle. Nairobi by 19:00.

โœ… We recommend Option B for almost all groups. The extra night at altitude makes the Rurimeria section achievable at a proper pace and turns a survival march into an extraordinary final summit day.

๐ŸŒฟ Flora & Wildlife

The northern Aberdare moorland is pure Afro-alpine terrain โ€” no bamboo, no dense forest, just open tussock grassland, Giant Lobelia, Giant Senecio (Dendrosenecio battiscombei), Helichrysum everlasting flowers, and the ancient volcanic formations of the Dragon's Teeth. Mountain Reedbuck graze the moorland plateau. Eland appear on the Table Mountain edges. Aberdare Cisticola โ€” Kenya's true highland endemic โ€” is heard throughout the tussock zone. Serval cats are possible on any high moorland night. The camp at Table Mountain plateau at 3,817m is one of the highest sleeping points available to any trekker on a Kenya highland route.
