β‘ 5 Things That Make This Safari Different From Everything Else Near Nairobi
1. In February 1952, Princess Elizabeth was staying at Treetops Lodge inside this park when King George VI died in London. She went up the treehouse steps a princess. She came down a Queen. No other safari destination on Earth carries that specific weight of history.
2. Karuru Falls drops 273 metres in three tiers β it is the tallest waterfall in Kenya. For context, that is taller than the Eiffel Tower. Most visitors to Kenya never see it. It is 150km from Nairobi.
3. The mountain bongo antelope β a forest giant with white vertical stripes and spiral horns β is one of Africa's most endangered large mammals. The Aberdare bamboo zone at 2,800 to 3,000m is one of the last places on Earth where wild bongo remain.
4. Mount Satima at 4,001m is the highest peak in the Aberdare Range. Its name in Maasai is Oldoinyo Lesatima β "mountain of the young bull." The volcanic cones on its flanks are called The Dragon's Teeth. The summit panorama on a clear day takes in Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, and the full floor of the Great Rift Valley simultaneously.
5. The Aberdares are one of Kenya's five designated water towers β the range feeds the rivers supplying Nairobi's water. A 400km electric fence, completed in 2009, encircles the park β one of the longest wildlife fences in the world. It changed everything for the large mammal population inside.
πΏ The Park β Why Aberdare Is Unlike Any Other Kenya Safari
Aberdare National Park covers 767 square kilometres of Kenya's central highlands. Its elevation ranges from 2,000m at the forest gates to 4,001m at the Mount Satima summit. Within that vertical range sits one of the most compressed ecosystems in East Africa β montane forest, bamboo belt, open moorland, and alpine peaks β all within a single park.
The eastern slopes catch Indian Ocean rainfall and remain lush year-round. The western side faces the Rift Valley and is drier. The deep gorges carved by the Chania, Karuru, Gura, and Magura rivers hold the waterfalls. The bamboo belt at 2,800 to 3,000m holds the bongo. The moorland above 3,000m holds giant lobelias, heather, and the rocky approaches to the summits.
This is not a safari park built for vehicle circuits and high animal densities. It is a mountain wilderness with wildlife. The experience is quieter, colder, more atmospheric, and more intimate than anything on the open plains.
π Full 3-Day Aberdare Itinerary
Available as a 2-day, 3-day, or 5-day format. This is the recommended 3-day itinerary. Contact us for the other formats.
π Day 1 β Nairobi to Aberdare: Forest Entry and First Game Drive
Departure: 07:00 AM from Nairobi
The Aberdares are 150km north-west of Nairobi. The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic and route.
Arrival at Aberdare Gate β KWS registration completed by your guide. An armed KWS ranger joins the group at this point and accompanies every activity inside the park. This is mandatory and non-negotiable inside Aberdare β the elephant and buffalo population is dense in the forest sections.
12:30 PM β Picnic Lunch at a Scenic Spot
Your cook team sets up lunch at a designated area inside the park. The forest atmosphere at 2,200 to 2,500m elevation β cool, misty, and quiet β is immediately different from any other Kenya park experience.
03:00 PM β Game Drive: Lower Forest Zones
The lower forest sections of Aberdare hold the densest wildlife. Elephants move between the forest margin and the bamboo belt. Cape buffalo graze in the forest clearings. Giant forest hog β one of Africa's largest pig species β are resident and surprisingly visible here compared to other parks. Black-and-white colobus monkeys are in the upper canopy.
Your guide drives slowly. Aberdare game drives are not about covering distance β they are about reading the forest.
Wildlife your guide is looking for on Day 1: Elephant Β· Buffalo Β· Giant forest hog Β· Black-and-white colobus monkey Β· Sykes monkey Β· Bushbuck Β· Reedbuck Β· Leopard (present but shy)
06:00 PM β Camp Arrival
Your guide team sets up camp at the designated campsite. Dinner prepared by the cook team. Temperature at 2,500m drops significantly after sunset β warm layers are essential every evening and morning.
The stargazing from inside Aberdare's highland position, with no nearby town light pollution, is excellent on clear nights.
π½οΈ Meals: Packed Lunch Β· Dinner Β· ποΈ Overnight: Aberdare campsite (~2,500m)
β°οΈ Day 2 β Mount Satima Summit Day (4,001m): The Dragon's Teeth
06:00 AM β Early Breakfast
Summit day. Eat well. The weather on the Aberdare moorland can change rapidly β clear and cold in the morning, cloud rolling in by midday. Your guide monitors conditions.
07:00 AM β Drive to Trailhead. Choose Your Route:
Shamata Route (Recommended for most groups): The beginner-friendly approach to Mount Satima. Longer but more gradual. Panoramic moorland views throughout. Suitable for visitors without technical trekking experience. Shamata Route details.
Wandare Route (Experienced hikers): Steeper and more direct. Higher physical demand. Better for those with prior multi-day trekking experience. Wandare Route details.
Your guide advises which is appropriate for your group on the morning of Day 2 based on observed fitness and conditions.
07:30 AM β Ascent Begins
The trail from the trailhead climbs through the transition from bamboo forest to open moorland. Giant lobelias β plants found only in equatorial high-altitude Africa β appear from approximately 3,200m upward. They can reach 3 to 4 metres. The landscape becomes increasingly alien at altitude.
The Dragon's Teeth β Mount Satima's volcanic cones are visible on the northern flank from the upper ascent route. These ancient volcanic plugs rise from the moorland as jagged spires β they give the Satima massif its dramatic skyline profile.
12:00 PM β Summit: Mount Satima 4,001m (Oldoinyo Lesatima)
The summit panorama is weather-dependent but when clear, it is comprehensive. Kilimanjaro on the southern horizon. Mount Kenya to the north-east. The full floor of the Great Rift Valley to the west, with Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita visible in the distance.
Picnic lunch at the summit. Take the time. Most guides who work this peak say the summit view on a clear day is the finest 360-degree viewpoint accessible by foot in Kenya's central highlands.
01:00 PM β Descent
Return to the trailhead by the same or alternative route depending on time and guide assessment.
04:00 PM β Return to Camp
Rest. The fire goes on early. Altitude exertion at 4,000m is tiring in ways that feel different from sea-level exercise.

π½οΈ Meals: Breakfast Β· Summit Picnic Lunch Β· Dinner Β· ποΈ Overnight: Aberdare campsite
π§ Day 3 β Karuru Falls, The Mau Mau Story, and Nairobi Return
08:00 AM β Breakfast and Pack-up
09:00 AM β Karuru Falls
Karuru Falls drops 273 metres β Kenya's tallest waterfall β in three dramatic tiers fed by the Karuru River, which rises in the bamboo zone. The first tier drops 117 metres. The second is 26 metres. The third drops 130 metres into a gorge surrounded by endemic ferns and orchids.
KWS viewing platforms provide safe observation of the gorge. Long-exposure photography here β the mist, the ferns, the three-tier cascade β produces results that have appeared in multiple international wildlife publications.
Chania Falls β across the valley, Chania Falls is smaller than Karuru but more accessible and excellent for ground-level photography.
Gura Falls β approximately 240 metres, plunging through dense forest. Not always accessible depending on recent rainfall β your guide advises on the day.
11:00 AM β The Mau Mau Story
The Aberdare Ranges were the primary forest stronghold of the Land and Freedom Army β the Mau Mau movement β during Kenya's independence struggle of the 1940s and 1950s. The dense forest and high-altitude terrain made the Aberdares nearly impenetrable for colonial security forces operating in the lowlands.
Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi, the movement's most prominent military leader, operated extensively from the Aberdare forests until his capture in 1956. The caves, ridges, and river valleys your group has been moving through for two days were his landscape.
Your guide has grown up in this region. The Mau Mau history here is not abstract β it is specific, geographical, and personal. Ask them to tell you their version.
The Queen Elizabeth Connection β in February 1952, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were staying at Treetops Lodge inside the park on a royal tour. On the morning of 6 February, she was told that her father, King George VI, had died during the night in London. She had gone up the treehouse steps a princess. She descended a Queen. Treetops Lodge remains one of the park's iconic accommodations β see accommodation options below.
Wildlife Drive β Bongo Focus
The mountain bongo is Africa's largest forest antelope and one of its most endangered mammals. The bamboo zone at 2,800 to 3,000m creates prime habitat for bongo antelope and forest elephants. Your guide knows the current bongo activity areas and positions for the best sighting probability. A bongo sighting in Aberdare is a genuine rarity. If it happens, it is the photograph of your Kenya trip.
01:00 PM β Final Lunch
02:00 PM β Depart Aberdare
06:00 PM β Nairobi Drop-off β hotel, residence, or JKIA.

β Frequently Asked Questions
Which route is better for Mount Satima β Shamata or Wandare?
The Shamata route is recommended for most groups β it is longer but more gradual, with better panoramic views throughout the ascent. It suits visitors without prior high-altitude trekking experience. The Wandare route is steeper and more direct β appropriate for experienced trekkers who want a more demanding summit day. Your guide assesses your group on the morning of Day 2 and recommends accordingly. Both routes are serviced and led by your KPSGA-certified guide and armed KWS ranger.
Is it true that Queen Elizabeth II became Queen inside this park?
Yes. In February 1952, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were staying at Treetops Lodge inside Aberdare National Park on an official royal tour of Kenya. On the night of 5β6 February, King George VI died in his sleep at Sandringham, England. The Princess was informed the following morning at Treetops. She departed immediately for London. She had walked up the steps to the lodge as a princess. She walked down as Queen Elizabeth II.
Can I see the mountain bongo?
Possibly. The mountain bongo is one of Africa's most endangered large mammals β there are estimated to be fewer than 100 wild individuals remaining in Kenya, concentrated in the Aberdare bamboo belt. Sightings happen regularly with experienced guides who know the current bongo activity areas. They are not guaranteed. A bongo sighting is rare and genuinely significant β it is not the kind of wildlife encounter you describe as a "nice drive." Your guide will tell you how many years they waited between their own sightings.
How does the armed KWS ranger work?
All activities inside Aberdare National Park require an armed KWS ranger accompanying the group. This applies to game drives, the waterfall hikes, the Satima summit, and any walking activity. The ranger is arranged by Wild Springs Adventures and is included in the package price. It is a KWS requirement β not optional β and adds a significant layer of safety in a forest with high elephant and buffalo densities.
How far is Aberdare National Park from Nairobi?
Aberdare National Park is approximately 150km north of Nairobi. The drive takes 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic and gate of entry.
How do I book?
WhatsApp +254 729 257 317 with your preferred dates, group size, and route preference for Mount Satima (Shamata beginner or Wandare experienced). We confirm guide and ranger availability within 24 hours and send a full pre-trip briefing. A 30% deposit confirms your booking.
