πŸ”οΈ 5-Day Mount Kenya Burguret–Chogoria Traverse β€” The Ultimate West to East Mountain Crossing 2026

Wild Springs Adventures Β· Nairobi-Based Mount Kenya Trekking Specialists Since 2013

🌍 Overview β€” The Rarest Crossing on Africa's Second-Highest Mountain

The Mount Kenya Burguret Chogoria traverse is the most exclusive and least-traveled full mountain crossing available on Mount Kenya National Park β€” used by fewer than 5% of trekkers annually and delivering a west-to-east mountain experience that no other single itinerary replicates.

The traverse begins on the Burguret Route β€” Mount Kenya's quietest and most pristine western approach, entering the mountain from Nanyuki through the giant bamboo forest of the western slopes. The Burguret is a wild route with no tourist infrastructure beyond the basic campsite, no guaranteed company, and no parallel vehicle track for most of its length. It is the route that guides and porters who know Mount Kenya well describe as the one they most enjoy β€” not because it is the easiest, but because it feels most like a real wilderness.

The crossing peaks at Point Lenana (4,985m) β€” Africa's highest non-technical trekking summit β€” before descending east via the Chogoria route into the most spectacular mountain scenery in East Africa: the Gorges Valley with Lake Michaelson 600 metres below, Hall Tarns, and the Nithi Falls at the forest exit. The Burguret Chogoria traverse is the only Mount Kenya itinerary that uses both a western wilderness approach and the eastern scenic descent in a single continuous crossing β€” entering where almost nobody goes and exiting through one of Africa's finest mountain landscapes.

Wild Springs Adventures has been guiding the Mount Kenya Burguret route since 2013. We know the giant bamboo groves, the buffalo movement patterns in the western forest, and the acclimatisation profile this route demands. We do not run this as a budget product with large crowds. Groups are capped at 8 trekkers. Guide ratio is maintained at 1:6. Every departure is private.

🌿 The Burguret Route β€” What Most Trekkers Never See

The Burguret route enters Mount Kenya from the northwest, ascending through one of the mountain's least-disturbed forest ecosystems before emerging onto the western moorland. Understanding what makes it different from the Sirimon route β€” which begins just 15km away β€” is what makes this traverse worth the extra planning.

The Giant Bamboo Forest (2,000m to 2,600m)

The lower Burguret valley holds one of East Africa's finest stands of indigenous giant bamboo β€” Yushania alpina β€” growing 10 to 15 metres in dense groves that close over the trail completely. Walking through this zone is genuinely immersive: the bamboo rustles in the wind, the light filters through the canopy in shafts, and the sound of the mountain forest replaces all external reference points. Your porters know this forest by sound β€” the alarm call of a colobus colony means something different from the alarm call that indicates buffalo.

Buffalo, Colobus, and Bongo Habitat (2,600m to 3,000m)

The Burguret forest is active wildlife territory. Cape buffalo tracks are common throughout the forest zone β€” actual sightings possible but not guaranteed. The black-and-white colobus colonies in the upper bamboo and podocarpus sections are highly reliable and photogenic. The Mountain Bongo β€” one of Africa's most critically endangered large mammals with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild β€” inhabits the Burguret forest zone specifically. Wild Spring guides are alert to bongo signs throughout Days 1 and 2. You will not be guaranteed a sighting. But this is one of the only places in the world where a bongo sighting is even possible.

Highland Castle Camp (3,700m)

The Highland Castle campsite on Night 2 is the Burguret route's signature feature β€” a dramatic camp on the western ridgeline with panoramic views of Batian and Nelion and the western moorland slopes dropping away below. There is no comparable camp position on the Sirimon route at this altitude. Most trekkers who have stayed at Highland Castle describe it as their favourite night on any Mount Kenya trek.

The Crossing to Shipton's Camp (Day 3)

The traverse joins the main Shipton's Camp zone on Day 3 β€” connecting the remote Burguret western wilderness with the established mountain routes. Arriving at Shipton's Camp after two days on the quiet Burguret route and seeing other trekkers for the first time since the gate is a notable moment. The rock spires of Batian and Nelion dominate the view from Shipton's exactly as they do for every trekker β€” but arriving from the west via a route almost nobody uses gives the same view a completely different quality.

πŸ—“οΈ Full 5-Day Burguret Chogoria Traverse Itinerary

🌿 Day 1 β€” Nairobi to Giant Bamboo Camp (2,800m) via Burguret Gate

Drive: 190km Nairobi to Nanyuki β€” approximately 3.5 hours Β· Trek: 4 to 5 hours through Burguret forest Β· Altitude: 1,950m to 2,800m

07:00 β€” Nairobi departure. Your private 4Γ—4 drives north via Thika, Karatina, and Nyeri before arriving in Nanyuki β€” the gateway to Mount Kenya's northern and western approaches. The snowline of Batian and Nelion is visible from the Nanyuki-Timau road on clear mornings, directly above you as you enter the park administration area.

KWS Registration. Formalities at the Nanyuki or Sirimon administrative office. The Burguret route requires specific ranger coordination β€” your guide handles this. The Burguret Gate (1,950m) is accessed via a rough 4Γ—4 track from the Nanyuki direction.

Trek begins. The Burguret forest zone is immediate β€” dense bamboo closing over the trail within the first 30 minutes. Your guide leads through the bamboo with an environmental briefing: the ecology of the western slope forest, the wildlife species this habitat supports, and the acclimatisation plan for the next four days.

The trail climbs steadily through bamboo groves and mixed podocarpus forest, crossing several small streams flowing west from the highland sources above. Colobus monkey colonies are usually encountered within the first 2 hours. Buffalo signs β€” fresh tracks, dung, disturbed vegetation β€” are common throughout.

16:00 β€” Giant Bamboo Camp (2,800m). A wild camp in the bamboo zone. No infrastructure. Your porters have set up the full camp β€” tents, mess tent, cooking equipment. The guide checks oxygen saturation for the first time. Hot dinner. Early sleep.

🍽️ Meals: Lunch and Dinner Β· πŸ•οΈ Camp: Giant Bamboo Camp β€” full camping equipment provided

πŸ”οΈ Day 2 β€” Giant Bamboo Camp to Highland Castle Camp (3,700m)

Trek: 5 to 6 hours Β· Altitude gain: 900m Β· Highlight: Western panorama and Highland Castle ridge views

07:00 β€” Departure. The trail ascends out of the bamboo zone into heath and moorland β€” the transition marked by the appearance of giant heather, tree groundsel, and the first giant lobelias. The vegetation opens progressively as altitude increases and the western panorama behind you begins to show: Nanyuki town in the valley, the Laikipia plateau extending northwest, and on exceptionally clear mornings, the outline of the Aberdares to the west.

The moorland terrain above 3,000m on the Burguret route is characterised by open ridgelines with long sight lines across the western face β€” completely different from the enclosed valley feel of the Sirimon's Mackinder's Valley or the Chogoria's gorge approach. You are on the exposed western shoulder of Africa's second-highest mountain with nothing between you and the summit zone ahead.

Highland Castle Camp (3,700m). The Burguret route's signature overnight location. The camp sits on a western ridge with direct line-of-sight to Batian and Nelion β€” the rock towers filling the eastern sky above camp. On clear evenings, the setting sun lights the western face of the mountain while the summit towers go gold above. Most trekkers consider this the finest camp view on any Mount Kenya route.

Oxygen saturation check. Hot dinner. The temperature at Highland Castle drops to -5Β°C to -8Β°C after sunset β€” your -15Β°C sleeping bag is correct equipment for tonight.

🍽️ Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Β· πŸ•οΈ Camp: Highland Castle Camp

πŸ”οΈ Day 3 β€” Highland Castle to Shipton's Camp (4,200m)

Trek: 6 to 7 hours Β· Altitude gain: 500m Β· The traverse meets the main mountain

07:00 β€” Departure. The final Burguret ascent section climbs toward the 4,000m zone β€” entering the high-alpine terrain where giant groundsel stands in isolated clumps across the open scree and the rock spires of Batian and Nelion grow larger with every hour of progress.

The trail joins the main mountain route network in the Shipton's Camp zone β€” a moment that most trekkers on the Burguret Chogoria traverse notice with a mix of satisfaction and slight reluctance. For two days you have had the mountain almost entirely to yourself. At Shipton's Camp there are other trekkers, a mess hut, and the organised infrastructure of the main mountain route. But the camp's position β€” directly below the East Face of Batian and Nelion with the Lewis Glacier visible above β€” is extraordinary from any approach direction.

Afternoon: Rest, hydration, full gear check for summit day. Your guide conducts the summit day briefing β€” timing, route line, weather assessment, emergency protocols. Oxygen saturation check. Lights out at 19:00.

Wake-up set: 02:00 AM.

🍽️ Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Β· πŸ•οΈ Camp: Shipton's Camp β€” hut available or tent

πŸŒ„ Day 4 β€” Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) and Descent to Mintos Hut (4,200m)

Trek: 8 to 10 hours Β· Altitude: 4,200m β†’ 4,985m β†’ 4,200m Β· Wake-up: 02:00 AM Β· The pivot day of the traverse

02:00 β€” Wake up. Temperatures at Shipton's: -5Β°C to -10Β°C. Full thermal layers. Headlamp check. Hot tea.

02:30 β€” Departure for Point Lenana. The pre-dawn ascent from Shipton's Camp follows the standard Lenana route β€” well-cairned, steep in sections, and increasingly spectacular as the first light begins to touch the summit above. Harris Tarn at approximately 4,750m reflects the dawn light over the ridge in one of the mountain's finest pre-dawn photographic moments.

Point Lenana (4,985m) at sunrise. Africa's highest non-technical trekking summit. Looking west from Lenana, you can trace the entire Burguret approach below β€” the western ridgelines you walked over on Days 1 and 2, the bamboo forest hidden below the moorland boundary, Nanyuki town visible as a cluster of buildings far below on the Laikipia plateau. You have crossed the mountain on foot from that place to here.

The Chogoria descent begins. From Point Lenana, the traverse turns east for the first time β€” beginning the Chogoria descent that delivers the route's most dramatic scenery. The Gorges Valley appears as you drop below 4,500m β€” sheer cliffs falling 600 metres to the valley floor, Lake Michaelson sitting in its glacier-carved cirque far below. This view, arriving after the austerity of the Burguret western approach, hits with full force.

Mintos Hut (4,200m) β€” Hall Tarns. The Chogoria route's signature high camp, surrounded by interconnected tarns. The afternoon view from the Observation Point above camp shows the full Gorges Valley panorama extending east toward Chogoria Town.

🍽️ Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Β· πŸ•οΈ Overnight: Mintos Hut / Hall Tarns

🌿 Day 5 β€” Mintos Hut to Chogoria Gate and Return to Nairobi

Trek: 15km to Chogoria Gate Β· Altitude loss: approximately 1,500m Β· Trekking time: 5 to 6 hours

07:00 β€” Departure. The Chogoria descent in morning light is the Burguret Chogoria traverse's most rewarding final act. The trail descends east through the moorland, passing Lake Ellis at 3,455m β€” a tranquil crater lake camp that serves as the Night 1 camp on the standalone Chogoria route trek β€” before dropping into the bamboo and podocarpus forest above Chogoria Gate.

Nithi Falls. As you approach the Chogoria forest exit, the Nithi Falls appears β€” thundering water audible before it is visible, plunging into the forested gorge below. The contrast with the quiet bamboo of the Burguret entry five days ago is the traverse's final narrative point: you entered through silence and you exit through one of the most dramatic waterfalls accessible on any Kenya mountain route.

Chogoria Gate. Park exit. Certificate signing. Your private vehicle collects the group here for the return to Nairobi via Chogoria Town, Embu, and Thika.

Nairobi arrival: Approximately 17:00 to 18:00.

🍽️ Meals: Breakfast and Lunch · 🚐 Transfer: Chogoria Gate to Nairobi via Embu

🐾 Wildlife on the Burguret Chogoria Traverse

The Mount Kenya Burguret Chogoria traverse covers more ecological zones than any other standard Mount Kenya route β€” from the western bamboo forest through the high-alpine summit zone to the eastern Chogoria forest and moorland. Each zone has its own distinct wildlife community.

πŸ›‘οΈ Personal travel insurance β€” mandatory, must cover trekking above 4,000m

🌑️ Sleeping bag rated to -15Β°C minimum β€” personal gear, not provided (critical: do not bring a bag rated above -10Β°C)

πŸŽ’ Personal trekking gear β€” full list provided at booking

πŸ™ Gratuities β€” suggested: porters KES 1,000 per day, cook KES 1,200 per day, guide KES 2,000 per day

πŸŽ’ Gear List β€” Burguret Chogoria Traverse

Critical β€” Burguret-Specific Requirements

🌑️ Sleeping bag rated to -15Β°C β€” the western slopes at 3,700m reach -8Β°C to -12Β°C at night. A bag rated to -5Β°C is insufficient for Highland Castle Camp. This is non-negotiable.

πŸ₯Ύ Waterproof mountain boots with ankle support β€” the Burguret forest trail is wet and uneven. Trail runners are not suitable above 3,000m on this traverse.

πŸ§₯ Down or synthetic insulated jacket rated to -15Β°C β€” both approaches are colder than the Sirimon due to the western exposure

🌧️ Waterproof hardshell jacket and trousers β€” the Burguret forest zone is wet year-round and rain is possible on any day above 3,500m

Standard Requirements

🧀 Warm gloves β€” inner thermal plus waterproof outer shell

🧒 Warm hat and buff

πŸ•ΆοΈ Sunglasses β€” UV severity at altitude is extreme even on cloudy days

πŸ₯’ Trekking poles β€” strongly recommended for the long descent from Lenana to Mintos on Day 4

πŸ’‘ Headlamp with fresh batteries and spare set

🧴 Sunscreen SPF 50+

πŸ“· Camera with extra battery β€” the bamboo forest and Highland Castle light are extremely photogenic

🌦️ Best Time for the Burguret Chogoria Traverse

June to October β€” Peak Dry Season (Best Overall): The finest conditions on both the Burguret approach (firm forest trails) and the Chogoria descent (clear Gorges Valley views). The bamboo forest is at its most photogenic in the dry season morning light. Book 3 months in advance for July and August.

December to March β€” First Dry Season (Excellent): Clear summit mornings at Lenana. The Nithi Falls runs strongly from the December short rains β€” the most dramatic the falls can be. January and February are the most reliable months for summit success on this traverse.

April to May β€” Long Rains (Not Recommended): The Burguret forest trail becomes extremely wet and slippery with high buffalo activity. The Gorges Valley on the Chogoria descent is frequently cloud-bound. We do not recommend this traverse in April or May.

November β€” Variable: Real-time mountain reports from our guides available. Contact us for current conditions.

⭐ What Our Trekkers Say

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Two Days of Bamboo Forest Before Any Other Trekker in Sight"

I have done the Sirimon twice. The Burguret Chogoria traverse was a completely different mountain. Two days through the western bamboo with our guide, one other trekker, and a forest that felt genuinely wild. The colobus at camp on Night 1. The Highland Castle view at sunset. Then arriving at Lenana and looking back west at where we had come from. Wild Springs ran everything perfectly β€” the logistics on the Burguret side are genuinely complex and they handled every detail.- Verified Repeat Trekker, Switzerland Β· TripAdvisor βœ…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "The Bongo Signs on Day 2 Were Unforgettable"

Our guide stopped us on the Day 2 morning climb and pointed out fresh bongo hoof prints in the mud β€” the most endangered large mammal in Africa, fewer than 100 wild individuals, and we were walking in its home. We never saw the animal itself but knowing it was there, in that forest, that morning β€” that changed the entire trek for me. This is what Wild Springs delivers on the Burguret route that nobody else does.- Verified Wildlife Researcher, United Kingdom Β· TripAdvisor βœ…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Professional, Well-Organized, Outstanding"

Wild Springs Adventures is the company for Mount Kenya. The Burguret Chogoria traverse was the finest mountain experience I have had in East Africa. Every detail from first WhatsApp to final drop-off was handled professionally.- Verified International Trekker Β· TripAdvisor βœ…

❓ Frequently Asked Questions β€” Burguret Chogoria Traverse

🌿 What is the Burguret route on Mount Kenya and why is it so rarely used?

The Burguret route is Mount Kenya's quietest western approach, entering the mountain from Nanyuki through the giant bamboo forest of the western slopes. It is rarely used because it has no tourist infrastructure in its lower sections, no established huts until the mountain joins the main network at the 4,200m zone, and requires ranger coordination due to wildlife activity including buffalo and critically endangered Mountain Bongo in the forest zone. Fewer than 5% of Mount Kenya trekkers use the Burguret route annually. For experienced trekkers specifically seeking solitude and genuine wilderness, this is precisely why it is the right choice.

🦌 Is it possible to see the Mountain Bongo on this traverse?

The Mountain Bongo β€” one of Africa's most critically endangered large mammals with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild β€” inhabits the Burguret forest zone on Mount Kenya's western slopes. Your guide is alert to bongo signs throughout Days 1 and 2. Fresh tracks, hoof prints, and disturbed vegetation are possible. An actual sighting of the animal itself is rare and cannot be expected. But the Burguret route is one of the only places in Africa where walking in confirmed bongo territory is part of the trekking experience.

πŸ§— What fitness level is required for the Burguret Chogoria traverse?

Challenging fitness is required β€” this is the most demanding of the standard Mount Kenya trekking itineraries in terms of navigation difficulty and the remoteness of the first two days. You need to trek 5 to 8 hours per day for 4 consecutive trekking days with significant altitude gain, including a summit day from 4,200m to 4,985m. No technical climbing is required. Prior trekking experience above 3,000m is strongly recommended. This is not an itinerary for first-time mountain trekkers β€” it is designed for experienced trekkers who have already done a standard route and want a more demanding and more remote experience.

🌑️ What sleeping bag do I need for the Burguret Chogoria traverse?

A sleeping bag rated to -15Β°C minimum is required. This is a hard requirement β€” not a suggestion. Night temperatures at Highland Castle Camp (3,700m) on Night 2 regularly reach -8Β°C to -12Β°C on the exposed western ridge. A bag rated to -5Β°C or -10Β°C is insufficient for this specific camp and could cause cold injury. If you do not have a -15Β°C bag, our Parklands Nairobi outdoor store has rental options available β€” contact us before your departure date.

πŸ“… How does this traverse compare to the standard Chogoria route trek?

The 5-day Chogoria route trek uses the Chogoria Gate for both ascent and descent orientation β€” ascending via the scenic Chogoria approach and descending via the Sirimon Valley. The Burguret Chogoria traverse uses the Burguret Gate for a completely different western approach β€” trading the Chogoria ascent scenery for the giant bamboo forest wilderness of the western slopes, before joining the main mountain network and descending via the Chogoria east side. Choose the standard Chogoria route for the best scenic ascent. Choose the Burguret Chogoria traverse for the best combination of wilderness approach and scenic descent in a single crossing.

πŸŒ„ What are the most photographically memorable moments on this traverse?

In order of photographic impact: 1) The Highland Castle Camp sunset with Batian and Nelion above (Night 2), 2) Harris Tarn pre-dawn reflection before the Lenana summit (Day 4 morning), 3) The Gorges Valley and Lake Michaelson panorama from above 4,500m on the Chogoria descent (Day 4 afternoon), 4) Giant bamboo grove morning light in the Burguret forest (Day 1), and 5) The Nithi Falls on the Chogoria exit (Day 5). Bring more battery than you think you need.

πŸ“‹ How do I book the Burguret Chogoria traverse?
