Why the Chogoria Route for your Mount Kenya Climb?
Fewer than 20% of Mount Kenya trekkers use the Chogoria route. That number is not a sign of inferior quality — it is a sign that the people who have done both routes consistently choose this one on return.
The three main non-technical routes on Mount Kenya are Sirimon (north-west), Naro Moru (west), and Chogoria (south-east). The Sirimon route is the most popular, well-graded, efficient, and reliable. The Naro Moru is the fastest but crosses the Vertical Bog, a saturated moorland section that becomes difficult in wet conditions. The Chogoria route is the most scenic trail in Mount Kenya, with waterfalls and lakes, and lots of valleys and views beyond.
What Chogoria delivers that neither of the other routes can: Nithi Falls in a forested gorge on Day 1. Lake Ellis in an open moorland basin at 3,500m on Day 2. The Gorges Valley and Lake Michaelson — a glacier-carved cirque with 600-metre cliff walls — on Day 3. The highest tarn field on the mountain, including Harris Tarn at 4,750m, on the pre-dawn summit push on Day 4. Then the Sirimon descent through Mackinder's Valley on the way down.
Six completely distinct environments. One 5-day climb. No other route comes close to this variety.

📋 Full 5-Day Chogoria Route Itinerary
🚐 Day 1 — Nairobi to Chogoria Gate to Meru Bandas (2,950m)
Departure: 06:30 from Nairobi
Your private 4×4 vehicle collects you from your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The drive heads east through Murang'a and Embu — approximately 4 to 4.5 hours — arriving in Chogoria Town (1,600m) in Tharaka-Nithi County. This is the mountain's eastern side: quieter, less visited, and approached through landscape that changes character with every 200 metres of altitude.
Your mountain team — lead guide, cook, and porters — are assembled here. Equipment check. The 4×4 continues up the 22km forest track from Chogoria Town to the gate, through forest so dense that the road disappears under canopy. Elephant and buffalo tracks on the red soil are common. The bamboo closes in.
Chogoria Gate (2,950m) — KWS registration. Park entry fees processed. Your certified guide briefs the group on the mountain, the route, the altitude protocol, and what the next four days will ask of you.
Nithi Falls — within the first trekking hour, the falls announce themselves as a low continuous thunder before the gorge appears. Nithi Falls plunges into the forested gorge in a cascade visible from the trail above. This is the Chogoria route's first signature moment. Allow 20 minutes here.
Meru Bandas (2,950m) — mountain hut accommodation in the forest zone. Hot dinner. Altitude check. First night at 2,950m — your body has already begun its acclimatisation response.
🍽️ Meals: Lunch (Chogoria Town) · Dinner · 🏕️ Overnight: Meru Bandas 2,950m
💧 Day 2 — Meru Bandas to Lake Ellis (3,500m): The Moorland Opens
Trekking: 9km · Gain: +550m · Time: 4–5 hours
07:00 departure. The trail climbs through the transition from forest to moorland — the vegetation changing in distinct bands as you gain altitude. By 3,200m, giant lobelias (Lobelia deckenii) appear at the trail edge — 2 to 3 metres tall, found only on East Africa's equatorial highland peaks.
Acclimatisation note: Sleeping at 2,950m last night and hiking to 3,500m today is the correct physiological pacing. Your blood is already producing more red blood cells to carry oxygen. Drink 4 to 5 litres of water today. Tell your guide if you feel headache, nausea, or unusual fatigue — these are normal warning signs and we respond to them.
Lake Ellis (3,500m · 28 acres)
The lake was first documented by Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis in 1927. Named after him. It sits in an open moorland basin at 3,500m, surrounded by heather and tussock, with Mugi Hill rising behind it. On still days the water is completely flat, reflecting the ridgeline above it.
The campsite is on the lake shore. This is one of the finest first mountain-camp locations in Kenya — calm enough to genuinely rest, elevated enough to feel the altitude working, beautiful enough to spend the afternoon exploring rather than sleeping.
Fishing: Lake Ellis holds rainbow and brown trout. KWS permit required — KES 500 per rod per day. Advise at booking if you want to fish here. Your guide will position you at the right bank section.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast · Packed Lunch · Dinner · 🏕️ Overnight: Lake Ellis camp 3,500m
🏞️ Day 3 — Lake Ellis to Mintos Camp / Hall Tarns (4,200m): The Gorges Valley
Trekking: 12km · Gain: +700m · Time: 5–6 hours · The finest hiking day in Kenya
07:00 departure. The most visually striking day of the entire traverse begins from the moment the trail leaves camp.
The Gorges Valley ridge — the trail climbs to the ridge above the Gorges Valley. The valley below was carved by Pleistocene glaciers. The walls drop approximately 600 metres in near-vertical sections. The scale is genuinely difficult to process from above.
Lake Michaelson (3,950m · 30 acres) sits in the base of the valley — a glacier-carved cirque lake shielded by The Temple, a 300-metre vertical cliff on its western wall. Halford Mackinder named it after a friend during his 1899 expedition that produced the first ascent of Batian. He said the view of Michaelson from above was the finest landscape he encountered on the entire mountain — after having climbed Africa's second-highest peak.
On still mornings before 09:00, the lake reflects Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) in conditions that produce photographs that appear to have been manipulated. They are not. This is what the lake looks like before the wind rises.
Fishing: Lake Michaelson holds rainbow and brown trout at 3,950m. KWS permit required. Your guide knows the correct bank position.
📖 More on Lake Michaelson and all 31 Mount Kenya water bodies: Mount Kenya Lakes and Tarns — Complete 2026 Guide
Vivienne Falls — the waterfall feeding Lake Michaelson from the plateau above, visible from the ridge before the descent line to the lake.
Hall Tarns and Mintos Hut (4,200m) — named after F.G. Hall, District Commissioner who administered Fort Hall (now Murang'a). The interconnected tarns at Mintos reflect the peaks on still afternoons. Point Lenana is visible ahead — the summit you will reach before dawn. Summit briefing by your guide. Early sleep essential.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast · Packed Lunch at the ridge above Gorges Valley · Dinner · 🏕️ Overnight: Mintos Hut or camp 4,200m
🌄 Day 4 — Summit Point Lenana (4,985m) and Descent to Old Moses (3,300m)
Distance: 20km · Gain/Loss: +785m / -1,685m · Total time: 10–12 hours · Wake-up: 02:00 AM
02:00 AM — Wake-up. Temperature at Mintos: -5°C to -12°C depending on season. Full thermal layers. Hot tea from the cook. Headtorch. Your guide checks every trekker's readiness before departure.
02:30 — Summit departure. The pre-dawn ascent follows a cairned trail under a sky that at 4,200m with no light pollution delivers one of the clearest starfield views accessible from any African mountain. Your guide leads by headlamp. The pace is slow and deliberate — altitude at 4,200m makes this non-negotiable regardless of fitness.
Simba Tarn (4,390m) — named after porters who reported a lion sighting in this area in 1924. Passed in the dark.
Harris Tarn (4,750m) — the highest tarn on Mount Kenya. Named after P. Wyn Harris who made the first ascent of Nelion with Eric Shipton in 1929. In pre-dawn stillness the water is completely flat. Point Lenana's reflection appears in the tarn surface in the first grey light before sunrise. Your guide knows the exact north-bank position that captures this image. Allow 15 minutes here if conditions allow — this photograph is the one that stays with people.
Point Lenana (4,985m) — sunrise
Mount Kenya's highest trekking summit. Arrival: approximately 05:30 to 06:00 AM depending on group pace. Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) rise directly overhead — Africa's second and third highest peaks by the same measure. On clear mornings, Kilimanjaro's profile is visible 330km south on the Tanzanian horizon — the only vantage point in Kenya from which both great summits are simultaneously visible.
Summit certificate signed by your guide. Record your saturation reading. Take the photograph. Then the descent begins.
Descent via Sirimon: From Point Lenana the traverse turns west. Route descends through the Hausberg Valley — Hausberg Tarn (4,370m) and Oblong Tarn (4,370m) both visible from the descent path — to Shipton's Camp (4,200m) for breakfast. The route then follows Mackinder's Valley south — the Sirimon route's signature moorland section, U-shaped and open, with the technical peaks behind you and rock hyrax on every boulder.
Old Moses Camp (3,300m) — arrival approximately 15:00 to 17:00. Hot dinner. Final night on the mountain.
🍽️ Meals: Pre-dawn hot drink · Breakfast at Shipton's · Packed Lunch · Dinner · 🏕️ Overnight: Old Moses Hut 3,300m
🌿 Day 5 — Sirimon Descent to Nairobi
Trek: 9km · Loss: -650m · Time: 2.5–3 hours
06:00 — Departure. The 9km descent from Old Moses to Sirimon Gate follows the Sirimon route through Hagenia forest — denser and darker on this side of the mountain than Chogoria. Colobus monkey colonies in the forest canopy above the trail.
Sirimon Gate (2,650m) — KWS exit registration. This is the moment to tip your guide and porter team. Ask us in advance for appropriate amounts — they made the summit possible.
Nanyuki — the equator is 5km south of the town centre. The mountain you summited is visible from the road. Lunch here before the drive south.
Nairobi arrival: 13:00 to 14:00.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast · Lunch in Nanyuki

🚌 Budget Option — Public Transport to Chogoria Town
If you are comfortable with Kenyan public transport, this option brings the per-person cost down meaningfully:
Take a matatu or bus from Nairobi's Machakos Country Bus Station to Chogoria Town (approximately KES 500–800, 4–5 hours). Your guide meets you at the designated point in Chogoria Town. From there, the private 4×4 vehicle takes you up the forest road to the gate — the section that requires 4×4 and local knowledge.
This option works well for solo travelers joining a group, or budget-conscious trekkers comfortable with Kenyan long-distance transport. Let us know at booking, and we will adjust the package price accordingly.
📅 Custom and Private Departures
The standard schedule is weekly. If your dates do not fit a group departure, we run private departures on any date, subject to guide and porter availability.
Private departure benefits: Your pace. Your photography stops. Your time at Harris Tarn without coordinating with another group's schedule. The Gorges Valley panorama with the full silence of a mountain that nobody else on your section of trail is occupying.
Custom departures require a minimum of 7 days notice. Contact us with your preferred dates and we confirm within 24 hours.

🏔️ Mount Kenya vs Kilimanjaro Comparison
| Feature | 🏔️ Mount Kenya Chogoria | 🌋 Kilimanjaro Machame |
|---|---|---|
| Summit | Point Lenana 4,985m | Uhuru Peak 5,895m |
| Technical? | No | No |
| Terrain | Steeper, more varied | More gradual |
| Alpine lakes | 8+ on this route | Minimal |
| Crowds | Low - 20% of Kilimanjaro traffic | Very high |
| Duration | 5 days | 7–8 days recommended |
| Price | From $750 pp | $1,500–$3,000+ pp |
| Best for | Scenery · lakes · value · first 5,000m prep | Africa's highest summit |
The honest recommendation: if you have done Kilimanjaro and want something more scenic and less crowded, the Chogoria route is what experienced East African mountain travelers consistently describe as the better mountain experience. If you want Africa's highest point, Kilimanjaro is the route. Many serious trekkers do both — this climb first, Kilimanjaro as the sequel.
🎒 Gear List - What to Bring for Chogoria Climb
Critical — do not arrive without these:
- 🌡️ Sleeping bag rated to -15°C — Mintos at 4,200m reaches -8°C to -12°C at night. A -5°C bag is not sufficient. Rental available at our Parklands store.
- 🥾 Waterproof mountain boots with ankle support — the forest and moorland trail requires proper grip and ankle stability. Trail runners are not appropriate above 3,500m.
- 🧥 Insulated jacket — down or quality synthetic — warm enough for -12°C at 02:00 AM on summit day.
- 🌧️ Waterproof hardshell jacket and trousers — rain is possible above 3,000m on any day of the year.
Strongly recommended:
- 🥢 Trekking poles — Day 4 descent (-1,685m in one afternoon) with poles is significantly kinder on knees without
- 📷 Camera with multiple batteries — cold at 4,200m discharges standard lithium batteries in under 2 hours
- 🔭 Binoculars — the Gorges Valley and the Hall Tarns bird activity require them
- 💊 Altitude medication — speak to your doctor about Acetazolamide before departure

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Chogoria route the best 5-day Mount Kenya climb?
The Chogoria route ascends the mountain's south-east face — the only approach that passes Nithi Falls, Lake Ellis, the Gorges Valley panorama with Lake Michaelson below, and the high tarn field including Harris Tarn at 4,750m. No other route delivers this range of scenery in 5 days. The Chogoria-Sirimon traverse then adds the western moorland descent through Mackinder's Valley. Fewer than 20% of Mount Kenya trekkers use this route, meaning significantly less traffic and a more personal mountain experience.
Is this suitable for a first-time high-altitude trekker?
Yes. This is among the most popular introductions to high-altitude trekking in East Africa. No technical climbing is required. The 5-day itinerary provides the best acclimatisation pacing of any Mount Kenya format. What it requires is moderate-to-good fitness, the ability to hike 6 to 12 hours per day at altitude, and the willingness to follow your guide's pace. Our guides have the experience to assess trekker fitness and adjust accordingly.
Can you climb Mount Kenya without a guide?
No. KWS regulations require all trekkers inside Mount Kenya National Park to be accompanied by a KWS-certified guide. This is a legal requirement — not a commercial preference. Independent trekking without a certified guide is not permitted.
How many days does it take to climb Mount Kenya?
The minimum responsible format is 3 days. The 5-day Chogoria route is the optimal balance of acclimatisation, scenery, and summit success rate. A 7-day format is available for the full lake expedition. Rushing to 2 days carries a significantly higher altitude illness risk.
How difficult is the Mount Kenya climb?
The 5-day Chogoria route is rated Moderate to Challenging. The terrain is non-technical — no ropes, harnesses, or climbing equipment. The difficulty comes from altitude (you reach 4,985m), sustained daily hiking (6 to 12 hours), and the physical demands of the pre-dawn summit push on Day 4. Trekkers who regularly hike and exercise at lower altitude handle this climb well with proper pacing.
What is the summit success rate on this route?
On Wild Springs' 5-day Chogoria-Sirimon itinerary, the summit success rate for trekkers who follow the guide's acclimatisation protocol is consistently above 85%. The primary reason trekkers do not summit is altitude illness, which our pulse oximeter protocol catches early enough to manage in most cases.
How much does it cost to climb Mount Kenya from Nairobi?
The 5-day Chogoria route climb from Nairobi starts from KES 88,000 per person for groups of 4 to 6, and $750 per person for non-residents. This is an all-inclusive price covering all KWS fees, transport, guide, porter, cook, camping equipment, and AMREF evacuation cover. Solo travelers and pairs are priced at KES 100,000–118,000 / $840–$980.
Can I fish in the lakes on this route?
Yes. Lake Ellis (3,500m) and Lake Michaelson (3,950m) are stocked with rainbow and brown trout. A KWS fishing permit is required — KES 500 per lake per rod per day. Advise us at booking if you want to include fishing time. Your guide adjusts the daily timing accordingly.
How do I book the Mount Kenya Trek?
WhatsApp +254 729 257 317 with your preferred dates, group size, any specific requirements (fishing, photography priority, budget option with public transport), and your experience level. We confirm availability within 24 hours and send a full pre-climb briefing document. A 30% deposit confirms your team and dates.
