π£ The Mountain Range They Called Scotland With Lions
The early British settlers who came to Kenya's Central Highlands in the early 20th century looked up at the mist-covered Aberdare Range, at the heather moorland and the cold rushing rivers, and they called it Scotland. Then a lion walked past. And the name stuck: Scotland with Lions.
In 1905, Lord Delamere and Colonel Grogan arranged the first consignment of trout ova from the Howietown Fisheries in Dumfries, Scotland, and transported them to British East Africa. Then came one of the most extraordinary logistics operations in colonial Kenya's history β the ova were carried on the heads of porters over the Kinangop Plateau and up into the Aberdare mountains to the Gura River at 11,000 feet. The first attempt failed. The ova perished on the journey. A second attempt used canvas buckets, four trout to a bucket, swung gently to keep the water aerated. 380 young fish survived and were installed in the Gura. They multiplied. Their descendants moved to the lower reaches. The rivers of the Aberdares were stocked further in the following decades β brown trout in the 1940s, rainbow trout thereafter β until these highland rivers became among the finest wild trout fisheries in Africa.
Today, the Chania, Gura, and Karuru rivers still carry both Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout in their cold, clear, peat-coloured highland water. They are best fished above the tree line in the open moorland β where the casting is unobstructed, the water runs fast over volcanic rock, and elephants and buffalo occasionally appear on the opposite bank to investigate what you are doing.
There is no other fishing experience in Kenya quite like this. Almost no other commercial operator offers it as a packaged product. Wild Springs Adventures does.

π The Rivers- Aberdare Fly Fishing Safari
π Chania River β The Most Accessible Trout River in Kenya
The Chania rises in the high moorland of the Aberdare Range and descends through open grassland and heather before plunging dramatically over the Chania Falls β one of the waterfalls the Wild Springs safari visits β and into the forest below. Above the falls, the river flows through the open moorland where casting is unobstructed and the fish are visible in the clear water. This is the most accessible trout river in the park and the best starting point for the fishing day.
Best access: 4Γ4 to the Chania River moorland section via the internal park road. Fish above the tree line in sizes 14β16 dry flies (Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator) or tungsten nymph patterns below the surface.
Typical catch: Brown and Rainbow Trout of 500gβ1.5kg. A catch of 3β5 fish is considered an excellent day.
π Gura River β The Historical River
The Gura was the first river to receive trout in Kenya β the original 380 fingerlings from Scotland, installed in 1905 after the failed first attempt. The Gura flows parallel to Karuru before both rivers cascade into the same spectacular gorge visible from the Karuru Falls viewing platform. The fishing is accessed via a walking section from the vehicle β the moorland above the falls is the productive zone.
Cave fishing is possible below one of the Gura's upper sections β a uniquely atmospheric experience of fly-casting in a mossy gorge with the sound of the falls echoing.
Typical catch: Slightly larger fish than the Chania on average β Brown Trout up to 2kg have been recorded.
π Karuru / Amboni River β The Wilderness Option
The least-fished of the three rivers. The Amboni is found in the northern section of the Aberdare moorland, not far from the Chania, and requires a 4Γ4 to access the bank. Best fished high in the moorland for the same casting access reasons as the Chania. The same fly patterns apply. Rarely encountered by other visitors, retaining a wilderness character that the more accessible rivers occasionally lose.
ποΈ See the Two Aberdare Trout Fishing Safari options
π£ Option A β Day Fishing Trip (Nairobi Return)
06:00 Β· Nairobi Departure Drive north to Mutubio Gate (~3 hours). Park fees and fishing licence paid at the gate. Armed ranger collected. 4Γ4 to the moorland section of the Chania River.
09:30 Β· Fishing Begins β Chania River Moorland The guide positions the group along the river above the tree line. Rods provided (own tackle warmly welcomed β personal preference for experienced anglers). The fishing is done from the bank β waders are not necessary, but long trousers are recommended for protection against the moorland vegetation and the cold water splash.
The Aberdare moorland in the morning: clean, cold air, the sound of running water over volcanic rock, the possibility of an elephant or buffalo appearing across the river while you hold a fly rod. This is what the settlers meant by Scotland with Lions.
12:00 Β· Karuru Falls Viewpoint β The Angler's Bonus After the morning Chania session, the vehicle drives to the Karuru Falls viewpoint β Kenya's tallest waterfall at 273 metres. Anglers who have fished the Gura can see both rivers meeting far below in the same gorge. Picnic lunch at the viewpoint.
13:00 Β· Gura River / Magura Cave Fishing The afternoon session moves to the Gura River or the cave fishing section near Magura Falls. A different character from the Chania β enclosed, green, and with the sound of the falls echoing around the casting pool.
15:30 Β· Exit Park Β· 18:30 Β· Nairobi
π£ Option B β Fishing + Waterfall Safari (Overnight)
Day 1: Nairobi β Karuru Falls β Chania Falls β Queen's Cave β Afternoon game drive β Lodge check-in (The Ark or Treetops). Night watch at the waterhole.
Day 2: Dawn game drive β Checkout β Full morning fishing session on the Chania and Gura β Picnic lunch at the river β Exit park β Nairobi.
This option combines the full Wild Springs Aberdare Waterfall Safari with the fishing experience β the best way to experience both the waterfalls and the rivers in a single trip, with the lodge night between them.
π The Fish β Brown Trout & Rainbow Trout in Kenya
The trout in the Aberdare rivers are not indigenous to Kenya. Their journey from Scotland's Howietown Fisheries to the Gura River at 11,000 feet in the Kenyan Central Highlands is one of the most remarkable acclimatisation stories in angling history. They have been in these rivers for over a century and have adapted completely to the high-altitude equatorial environment β finding food in the same insect populations that fill the moorland air, spawning in the gravel runs between the volcanic rock, and growing in the same cold, clear water that eventually becomes Kenya's tallest waterfall.
Brown Trout (Salmo trutta): The more elusive of the two species. Found primarily in deeper pools below the faster runs. Best targeted with tungsten nymph patterns (hare's ear, pheasant tail) or small dark wet flies. Up to 2kg in the Gura.
Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): More numerous and more aggressive in their take. Excellent dry fly fish β they will rise confidently to a well-placed Adams or Caddis pattern on the Chania. The bag limit of 6 per day is achievable on a good morning.
Recommended fly patterns for Aberdare rivers:
- Dry: Parachute Adams (14β16), Elk Hair Caddis (12β16), Stimulator (12β16), Hopper (14)
- Nymph: Tungsten Hare's Ear (14β16), Pheasant Tail Nymph (14), Gold-Head Zebra Midge
- Wet: Small dark wet flies in sizes 12β14
Own tackle always welcome. Basic rods and flies are provided for guests who do not have equipment. For serious fly anglers, bringing your own 4β5 weight rod, floating line, and a selection of Kenyan-pattern flies (Kenya Bug, Mrs. Simpson β both developed for these specific waters) is strongly recommended.
π¦ Wildlife Beside the River
The Aberdare rivers run through the most active wildlife zones of the park. Fishing here is never done in isolation from the broader ecosystem β it is done with a ranger for good reason.
| πΎ Species | ποΈ Likelihood at River | π Where |
|---|---|---|
| π Forest Elephant | β β β ββ | River banks and crossings β they use the same water |
| 𦬠Buffalo | β β β β β | Moorland sections above the tree line |
| π¦ Mountain Reedbuck | β β β β β | River margins and open moorland |
| π Black-and-White Colobus | β β β ββ | Forest sections near the waterfall approaches |
| π Giant Forest Hog | β β β ββ | Forest margin near the rivers |
| π¦ African Fish Eagle | β β β β β | Every river β the most vocal bird on the water |
| π¦ Malachite Kingfisher | β β β β β | Low over the river β always present |
| π¦ African Darter | β β β ββ | River sections near standing water |
The rule: The KWS ranger walks ahead of the group when moving between fishing spots. At the river, the ranger watches the opposite bank and the vegetation above. The guide manages the fishing logistics. This arrangement is required by park regulation and is genuinely necessary β the rivers pass through elephant country, and the vegetation on the banks can be dense enough to conceal a buffalo at close range. The ranger earns every shilling of the fee.
ποΈ The History β Scotland With Lions: Aberdare Trout Fishing Safari
The story of trout in Kenya is a colonial-era logistical adventure that belongs in the category of extraordinary human determination. The first consignment from Dumfries failed entirely. The ova perished before they could be installed. The second attempt succeeded by the most improbable means β canvas buckets swung rhythmically during transport to keep the water aerated, 380 young fish surviving the 7,000-mile journey from Scotland to a highland river in equatorial Africa.
The Aberdare rivers were then stocked further over the following decades. In 1926, 700 fry were carried across the Aberdare hills in tanks to the Mathioya River, but none survived. A new system β paths cut through dense forest, small groups of fish carried in oxygenated containers β eventually worked. The trout multiplied and migrated to the lower reaches. By the mid-20th century, the Aberdare rivers were well established as some of the finest highland trout fisheries in East Africa.
The Kenya Angling Association, formed in 1919, standardised the stocking programme. The Game Department took over in 1921. Both the Brown Trout (from Scotland's Loch Leven strain) and Rainbow Trout (from American stock via Europe) were eventually established in the same rivers. Their descendants fish today in the Chania and Gura, a century after the first surviving introduction.
The KWS Fishing Lodge, managed inside Aberdare National Park near the Chania area, was established specifically for anglers β evidence that the park administration has always understood the fishing heritage of these rivers.

β Frequently Asked Questions β Aberdare Trout Fishing
Do I need a fishing licence for Aberdare National Park?
Yes. A non-transferable fishing licence is required and is obtained at the park gate. Wild Springs handles this as part of the package β the fee is included in the price.
What type of fishing is allowed in Aberdare National Park?
Fly fishing only. Spin fishing, bait fishing, and lure fishing are not permitted in Kenyan national parks. Only fly fishing with artificial flies is allowed on the Chania, Gura, and Karuru rivers.
What is the trout bag limit in Aberdare National Park?
6 Rainbow Trout and 4 Brown Trout per fishing licence per day. These are the official KWS limits for public rivers. No closed season applies to the main Aberdare rivers, but individual sections may be rested periodically.
Do I need to bring my own fishing equipment?
No β basic rods and flies are provided. Experienced fly anglers are strongly encouraged to bring their own 4β5 weight rod and their own flies, particularly Parachute Adams (14β16), Elk Hair Caddis (12β16), and tungsten nymph patterns. The fishing is specific enough that personal tackle produces better results.
Is trout fishing in Kenya catch and release?
Wild Springs encourages catch and release to preserve the wild populations, but it is not legally required. Anglers may keep fish within the bag limit. If you wish to cook your catch on the river, our guide can prepare a riverside lunch with the fresh trout β an extraordinary experience.
Is it safe to fish in Aberdare National Park?
Yes, with a KWS ranger escort, which is mandatory. The rivers pass through active elephant and buffalo country. The ranger walks ahead between fishing positions and monitors the opposite bank while you fish. The safety record is excellent precisely because the ranger requirement is enforced consistently.
When is the best time for trout fishing in Aberdare?
Year-round β there is no closed season. The dry season (JanuaryβFebruary and JuneβSeptember) gives the clearest water and the firmest river bank access. The wet season (AprilβMay, November) raises the river levels and can make some sections unfishable, but others become more productive. Year-round fishing is possible with appropriate seasonal adjustments to the day's programme.
π£ The Chania River Is Waiting
The Brown Trout in the Chania River are descended from fish that made a 7,000-mile journey from Scotland to the Kenyan Central Highlands in 1905. They have been in this water for over a century. The river has been running over the same volcanic rock since before the roads, before the gates, before the waterfall viewing platforms were built above the gorge they eventually fall into.
A fly rod. A cold, clear highland river. A mounted KWS ranger on the opposite bank in case a buffalo appears. Somewhere below you, the same water becomes Kenya's tallest waterfall.
Scotland with Lions. There is nowhere else in the world quite like it.
