Aberdare National Park is mist, forest, and altitude. Kenya's tallest waterfall. Ancient cedar trees draped in lichen. A wooden lodge on stilts above a floodlit waterhole where elephants come every evening. Bamboo thick enough to shelter a freedom fighter. A mountain range that runs 160 kilometres and contains its own weather systems.

Lake Nakuru National Park is the opposite of all of this — open savanna, alkaline water, the pink of a million flamingos at the shoreline in full East African sun. One of Kenya's best rhino sanctuaries. Lions spotted in the trees above Flamingo Hill. Rothschild's giraffe — one of the rarest in the world — grazing the acacia woodland. 07:00 · Nairobi Departure The drive north through Thika, Karatina, and the tea country above Nyeri. Temperature drops. The Aberdare escarpment appears. Kiandogoro Gate by 10:00.

10:00 · Enter Aberdare National Park · Kiandogoro Gate Park fees paid. Armed KWS ranger collected for the waterfall day.

10:30 · 🏆 Karuru Falls — Kenya's Tallest Waterfall · 273 Metres Three tiers. 117m, 26m, 130m. Simultaneously visible on the opposite gorge wall: Gura Falls (~240m). Two of Kenya's most powerful waterfalls in the same frame from the same viewing platform. Minimum 30 minutes. Walk to both platforms.

12:30 · 🪜 Chania Falls — Pack Lunch at the Plunge Pool Staircase descent into the gorge. The plunge pool. Ice-cold peat-coloured water. The walls of moss and fern. Enclosed and extraordinary.

14:00 · 🦁 Magura Falls & Queen's Cave The Mau Mau hideout and the spot where Princess Elizabeth became Queen of England. Both stories in the same 500 metres of forest.

15:30 · Afternoon Game Drive to Lodge Forest elephants toward the waterhole. Buffalo in the clearings. Giant forest hog in the undergrowth.

17:00 · Lodge Check-In — The Ark or Treetops Floodlit waterhole at dusk. Get to the deck before dinner. Something arrives before the light goes.

🦩 Day 2 · Morning Game Drive → Aberdare → Lake Nakuru

06:00 · Dawn Game Drive — Aberdare Salient The forest at first light. Mist in the cedar canopy. Bongo antelope in the bamboo margins at dawn if the forest has been quiet. A second visit to the waterhole before checkout.

10:00 · Lodge Checkout · Depart Aberdare

12:00 · Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park. The road descends from the highland forest toward the Rift Valley. The landscape shifts completely — open acacia savanna, the alkaline lake spreading across the valley floor, and if the conditions are right, a pink border of flamingos visible from the approach road.

Lanet Gate entry · Afternoon game drive Lake Nakuru in the afternoon: lions in the acacia trees above Flamingo Hill (the lions of Nakuru are famous for climbing trees — a behaviour unusual enough to photograph at every opportunity). Rothschild's giraffe on the acacia grassland — an endangered subspecies, relocated here for protection, now one of the most reliable populations in Kenya. Rhinos at the waterhole edges. The lake shore at golden hour with flamingos and pelicans.

🦏 Day 3 · Full Day — Lake Nakuru National Park

06:00 · Full Morning Game Drive Baboon Cliff — the park's most famous viewpoint — gives a complete aerial panorama of the lake and the pink flamingo border. On a clear morning, this view is one of the finest in Kenya. Then the full loop: southern shore for flamingo photography, the rhino sanctuary tracks, the tree lion search in the acacia woodland, Makalia Falls at the park's southern end — a smaller waterfall than the Aberdare circuit but positioned in a beautiful picnic spot.

13:00 · Picnic Lunch — Makalia Falls or Baboon Cliff The park's picnic sites are among the finest in Kenya — shaded, with wildlife visible, and without the vehicle pressure of the main viewing circuits.

15:00 · Final Game Drive Loop The afternoon light over the lake, particularly from Out of Africa Hill, produces the finest photography of the trip. The flamingo border in afternoon sun, with the Rift Valley escarpment behind it, is an image worth the entire four days.

17:00 · Return to Lodge

Overnight: Lake Nakuru lodge — second night

🚐 Day 4 · Morning Drive → Exit → Nairobi

06:00 · Final Dawn Drive · 10:00 · Exit · 13:00 · Nairobi Final loop through the rhino sanctuary and lake shore before the gate. The drive back to Nairobi takes approximately 2.5 hours.
