πŸ”οΈ Where the Road Ends and the Trout Begin

There is a moment on the Ntirimiti access road β€” the only way in β€” when even the Defender starts to feel the gradient. You have left the comfortable transfer vehicle behind in Nanyuki. You are now climbing Mount Kenya's northeastern flank on a track that most vehicles cannot follow. Then the road ends completely. You get out, the Rutundu staff take your gear, and you walk fifteen minutes through the Kizito Gorge to emerge at the edge of a volcanic crater lake at 3,078 metres above sea level, where the water is cold, clear, and full of rainbow trout.

This is Lake Rutundu β€” one of Kenya's most remote fishing destinations, sitting in the shadow of Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Africa's second-highest mountain.

Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton here in October 2010. His entry is in the cabin guest book. We mention it not as a gimmick, but because it explains something true about this place β€” it is the kind of destination that makes people want to mark a permanent moment. The lake, the silence, the peaks above, the trout in the water below, the log fire in the cedar cabin at night. You will understand when you arrive.

Wild Springs Adventures brings mountain expertise and full logistics management to an experience that most operators in Kenya cannot properly execute. We handle both the transfer vehicle from Nairobi and the specialist Defender from Kisima, the park fees and fishing licences, and your mountain guide for the Lake Alice hike. One company, the entire journey.

πŸ›£οΈ The Logistics - How This Journey Actually Works

Rutundu logistics are real, specific, and non-negotiable. Understanding them before you book means you arrive prepared.

🚐 Leg 1 β€” Nairobi to Nanyuki (Sirimon Side)

Your journey begins in Nairobi in a comfortable transfer vehicle β€” sufficient for the paved highway north. The standard route follows the A2 through Nyeri and Nanyuki, approximately 3.5 to 4 hours depending on morning traffic. This vehicle does not go up the mountain. It is not built for what comes next, and attempting it wastes your time, risks a breakdown at altitude, and gets your vehicle stuck in a gorge no recovery truck can reach.

The transfer vehicle parks in Nanyuki or at the Sirimon Gate area. Your luggage transfers to the Defender.

πŸ’‘ Cost-saving tip: Sharing the Nairobi transfer across a group of 4–6 substantially reduces the per-person cost. Solo travellers and pairs pay the most per head for this leg. Consider travelling as a group or joining a scheduled Wild Springs departure.

πŸš™ Leg 2 β€” Kisima to Lake Rutundu via the Defender

The access road to Rutundu begins in the Kisima area, in the Ntirimiti locality on the northeastern slopes of Mount Kenya. The landmark reference point near the access area is the Kenya School of Adventure and Leadership (KESAL), located 9km off the Nanyuki-Meru road. The Ntirimiti entrance is not an official KWS gate β€” it is the only functional access road to the Rutundu cabins, and it requires a proper Defender or equivalent heavy-duty 4x4. Nothing else consistently makes this road.

The Defender is sourced from Kisima and covers approximately 1.5 hours of progressively difficult mountain track. As the track climbs, the road narrows, the gradient steepens, and the views of Laikipia and the northern frontier open behind you. The road ends definitively at the Kizito Gorge.

From the Kizito Gorge, the Rutundu staff meet you. Your luggage is transferred to the cabins by the team. You walk 15 minutes through the gorge to reach the lake. That 15-minute walk is the transition from the world you left to the one you came for.

πŸ”‘ Key logistics fact: The Defender operates at $150 per day from Kisima. For a 2-day/1-night trip, the Defender cost is $300 total. For a day trip, it is $150. This cost is fixed per vehicle, not per person β€” meaning larger groups share it more efficiently.

πŸ”οΈ Leg 3 β€” Lake Alice (The Hike from Rutundu)

Lake Alice sits at 3,500 metres above sea level, 6 kilometres from Rutundu Log Cabins via a hiking trail across open moorland and through giant groundsel forest. The hike takes 1.5 to 2 hours ascending and approximately 1 hour descending. It requires a Mount Kenya National Park line fee (KES 1,550 per line per day) and a Wild Springs mountain guide accompaniment.

This is not a casual stroll. At 3,500m, altitude effects are real. The open moorland above Rutundu offers no shelter. The Wild Springs guide on this hike is mountain-trained β€” not a fishing guide hired for the day. This distinction matters.

πŸ” Alternative access to Lake Alice only: Clients who want to visit Lake Alice without staying at Rutundu can approach via Chogoria Gate on the eastern side of the mountain, drive 5km into the park, and hike the remaining distance to Lake Alice. This is a valid day-trip option for Lake Alice as a standalone destination. Chogoria Route information β†’

🌊 The Waters β€” Three Fishing Destinations at Altitude

πŸ”΅ Lake Rutundu (3,078m) β€” The Main Event

A self-contained volcanic crater lake covering 0.4 square kilometres on the northeastern face of Mount Kenya. The water is sourced from a spring β€” tap water at the cabins is safe to drink directly. The lake is stocked with Rainbow Trout that have adapted over generations to the cold, UV-intense, oxygen-rich equatorial high-altitude environment. The Rutundu trout are not seasonally released hatchery fish. They are a self-sustaining population with the musculature and colouring of fish that have genuinely had to work for their size.

Average catch: 2–3 lbs | Exceptional fish: 6–10 lbs Equipment provided: Rowing boat + 3 casting platforms Previous experience required: None β€” though serious fly anglers will find the clear-water sight fishing a proper technical challenge

πŸ”΅ Lake Alice (3,500m) β€” Africa's High Altitude Fishing Secret

Among the highest fishing destinations accessible on foot in Africa. Lake Alice holds fewer fish than Rutundu but larger ones β€” records above 6 lbs have been documented. The lake is reached by a 6km hike from the cabins across moorland dominated by giant lobelia, tussock grass, and the otherworldly forms of Dendrosenecio groundsels. Mount Kenya's peaks are visible from the lake shore throughout the hike. The casting is done at altitude with the mountain above you and the Laikipia plateau falling away in the distance.

Park line fee: KES 1,550 per line per day (paid at the national park boundary) Hike from Rutundu: 6km Β· 1.5–2 hours ascending

πŸ”΅ Kizito/Kathita River Gorge β€” Wild Stream Fishing

The river runs immediately beside the Rutundu cabins, and through the gorge you crossed on arrival. It holds smaller trout than the lake β€” ideal for the angler who prefers the technical challenge of reading moving water, placing a fly in a narrow run, and holding a fish on a short line in an enclosed gorge with the sound of falls echoing around you. No boat, no platform. Just a river and a fly rod.

🐟 The Fish β€” Rainbow Trout at 3,078 Metres

The rainbow trout of Lake Rutundu are not from a hatchery truck. They are a self-sustaining population that has lived in this volcanic crater lake for decades, adapted to the cold, UV-intense, oxygen-rich conditions of equatorial high altitude. They feed on the same moorland insect hatches that fill the air above the heather. They are deeply coloured, strongly built, and frequently larger than trout you will find at similar altitudes elsewhere in East Africa.

🌿 Leave No Trace β€” Our Commitment at Rutundu

Lake Rutundu feels undiscovered precisely because the people who use it have historically treated it with respect. Wild Springs Adventures applies strict Leave No Trace principles on every guided experience:

  • πŸ›οΈ All waste is carried out by every member of the group β€” nothing left at the lake, gorge, or cabin surrounds
  • 🐟 Catch and release is encouraged on all waters to preserve the self-sustaining trout population
  • 🦬 Wildlife is observed from a distance β€” no deliberate approach or feeding
  • πŸ₯Ύ Lake Alice hike follows established moorland paths to protect the alpine vegetation
  • 🌍 Rutundu maintains radio communication with Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Kenya Wildlife Service β€” our presence contributes to anti-poaching awareness in this active elephant corridor

🀝 Fair Pay to Guide & Crew β€” The People Behind the Experience

The Rutundu experience works because of a small, dedicated team at the cabins: Peter Kandie, Cosmas Cheseram, Jackson Sirma, and James Chepkonga, among others, who maintain the cabins, manage the gorge logistics, and ensure the lake stays productive. Wild Springs Adventures pays above-industry rates for every guide and driver involved in this package. The Defender operator, the Wild Springs mountain guide, the transfer driver β€” every member of the team is fairly compensated.

When you tip generously (KES 1,500–3,000 ), you are directly supporting the people who hold this wild and remote place together. We are transparent about that and always will be.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there two vehicles required?

The Ntirimiti/Kisima access road to Rutundu requires a Land Rover Defender or equivalent. Standard minibuses and SUVs regularly fail on this track, particularly in wet conditions. The standard transfer vehicle from Nairobi covers the highway efficiently and economically. The Defender covers the mountain section safely and reliably. Attempting the full journey in one standard vehicle is a false economy that frequently results in a vehicle stuck at altitude with no recovery option.

Can I drive my own vehicle to Rutundu?

If you own a proper Defender or equivalent expedition 4x4 in good condition, yes β€” with significant caveats. The track is harsh, the altitude accelerates mechanical stress, and recovery in the event of a breakdown is a serious logistical problem. Wild Springs strongly recommends using the dedicated Defender from Kisima. We have a working relationship with the Kisima Defender operator precisely because reliability on this road matters.

How far is the hike to Lake Alice from the cabins?

6 kilometres from Rutundu Log Cabins to Lake Alice, crossing open moorland and giant groundsel forest. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours ascending and approximately 1 hour descending. The altitude at Lake Alice is 3,500 metres β€” notable even for guests acclimatised to Rutundu's 3,078m. A Wild Springs mountain guide accompanies all Lake Alice hikes.

Is this suitable for non-anglers in the group?

Absolutely. The Rutundu experience rewards non-anglers as much as the fishing rewards anglers. The birdwatching at the lake is exceptional. The walks around the lake and the gorge are beautiful at any pace. The Lake Alice hike is a rewarding mountain experience regardless of fishing. The cabin environment β€” log fire, mountain air, no signal, the lake outside the window β€” is genuinely restorative for people who have no interest in fishing whatsoever.

Can I combine this with a Mount Kenya climb?

Yes. Wild Springs Adventures guides all major Mount Kenya trekking routes β€” Sirimon, Chogoria, Naro Moru, and the Kamweti Route. A fishing expedition at Rutundu followed by a summit attempt via Sirimon is a genuinely extraordinary 6–7 day itinerary. Contact us to design it.

What do I provision for the cabin stay?

Everything. Rutundu is self-catering. The cabin has a gas oven and hob, an outdoor fridge (no freezer), and all crockery and cutlery. The tap water at Rutundu comes from a mountain spring and is safe to drink. Provision your Nanyuki stop carefully β€” Wild Springs provides a detailed provisions list on booking. Recommended: pre-cooked proteins, pasta, rice, eggs, coffee, warm drinks, good wine for the fire, and high-energy snacks for fishing. Do not forget fire starters.

Is the Prince William story accurate?

Yes. Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton at Rutundu Log Cabins in October 2010 during a private safari on Mount Kenya's northern slopes. His entry is in the cabin guest book. We mention it because it captures something true about what kind of place this is β€” not because it is a marketing hook.
