⚡ 5 Key Facts - Read First
1. Point Lenana at 4,985m is a non-technical trek. No ropes or climbing experience needed. But altitude is the challenge — and 3 days is aggressive. Read the honest fitness section below before you book.
2. Chogoria is the most scenic ascent route on Mount Kenya. Sirimon is the gentler descent. This combination gives you the best visual experience going up and the most comfortable exit coming down.
3. The summit push starts at 02:30 AM on Day 3. You arrive at Point Lenana for the African sunrise. This is the moment the whole climb is built toward.
4. All prices include KWS park fees, KWS-certified guide, porters, all camping equipment, all meals on the mountain, and AMREF Flying Doctors emergency cover.
5. We run weekly departures. A solo booking guarantees your spot. We confirm your guide team and send a pre-climb briefing 7 days before departure.
The Route Logic - Why Chogoria Up and Sirimon Down
Mount Kenya has three main routes. Most trekkers use one route for both ascent and descent.
This combination uses two.
Chogoria ascent approaches from the south-east. It is the longest and most scenic approach — waterfalls, glacial valleys, alpine lakes, and the dramatic Gorges Valley viewpoint. It is also the driest route on the mountain, which matters in the rainy months.
Sirimon descent exits from the north-west. The trail follows the glacial Mackinder's Valley down through open moorland and then forest to the Old Moses Gate. The descent is gradual and manageable after the summit push.
Together they form a traverse — you cross the mountain rather than retrace your steps. This means you see more of Mount Kenya National Park in three days than most 4-day climbers who use a single route.
🎯 Who This Climb Is For
🏋️ Fit trekkers with prior multi-day hiking experience. You should have done a multi-day trek before and know what 7 to 8 hours of continuous uphill hiking feels like in your body.
⏱️ Time-constrained travelers. Based in Nairobi or transiting Kenya. You have 3 days and you want the summit. This is the route.
🏔️ Altitude acclimatisation training. Climbers building toward Kilimanjaro (5,895m), Rwenzori, or other high-altitude objectives use this 3-day Chogoria-Sirimon combination as structured high-altitude exposure.
📸 Landscape photographers. Chogoria is the most photographed approach on the mountain. The gorge, the lakes, the volcanic formations, and the morning light at Point Lenana are genuinely world-class subjects.
⚠️ Honest Fitness Assessment — Read This Before Booking
Three days is the compressed format. The standard format for this route combination is 4 to 5 days.
On a 3-day itinerary, you gain altitude faster than your body's optimal acclimatisation rate. This creates a higher risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) compared to a 4-day or 5-day version of the same route.
You should only book the 3-day format if:
You have previously hiked above 3,500m without significant altitude sickness symptoms. You exercise regularly — at least 3 to 4 sessions per week including sustained cardio. You can comfortably manage 7 to 8 hours of hiking with a light pack on consecutive days.
If you are unsure about your fitness or altitude experience, we recommend our 5-Day Mount Kenya Chogoria Trek or Mount Kenya Group Treks with guaranteed departures. Both allow more time at altitude and carry a significantly higher summit success rate.
The 3-day format has a strong success rate for appropriately fit and experienced climbers. For the right person, it is genuinely achievable. Our guides assess your fitness and pacing from Day 1 and manage accordingly.

📋 Full 3-Day Chogoria Sirimon Itinerary
🚐 Day 1 — Nairobi to Lake Ellis Camp (3,400m): The Chogoria Approach
Departure: 05:30 AM from Nairobi
Your Wild Springs transport collects you from your Nairobi hotel. The drive heads north-east, passing through Embu and into the agricultural highlands surrounding the mountain's lower slopes — coffee, tea, and maize all the way to the forest margin.
Chogoria Town (2,100m) — breakfast stop, approximately 4 hours from Nairobi. Final supplies. Last phone signal for most networks.
Chogoria Gate (2,990m) — enter Mount Kenya National Park. Meet your guide team. Brief and equipment check. The trail begins.
The forest section (2,990m to 3,200m) — the first 2 to 3 hours are inside old-growth montane forest. Colobus monkeys are common. African green pigeons. The canopy is dense and the trail is well-defined. This is the same forest that forms part of the mountain's water tower function for the surrounding region.
Roadhead and the Moorland Transition (3,300m) — the forest gives way abruptly to the giant heather and giant groundsel moorland. The vegetation here — plants that exist nowhere else at this scale — is one of the visual signatures of equatorial high-altitude Africa.
Mugi Hill viewpoint — an acclimatisation walk of approximately 2km from Roadhead. Your guide takes you here deliberately. The views over the Chogoria valley and back toward the lowlands calibrate your sense of the mountain's scale. The Giant's Billiards Table rock formation is visible from this position.
Lake Ellis Camp (3,400m) — a flat camping area on the shores of the lake. The water is clear and cold. The moorland stretches in every direction. Tonight the sky, if clear, will show the Milky Way from horizon to horizon with no light interference.
Dinner at camp. Briefing on tomorrow's altitude gain and pacing strategy.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast in Chogoria · Lunch at Roadhead · Dinner at Lake Ellis · 🏕️ Overnight: Lake Ellis Camp 3,400m
⛰️ Day 2 — Lake Ellis to Mintos Camp (4,200m): The Gorges Valley and The Temple
Departure: 07:00 AM
This is the most visually rewarding day on the mountain.
From Lake Ellis the trail climbs above the lake and follows the ridge north-west. The views open progressively — Lake Michaelson in the valley below, the Gorges Valley cutting deep between the ridges, and the first clear sightlines toward the jagged peaks of Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) — the technical summits that require ropes and experience. Your objective, Point Lenana, is the third peak visible behind them.
Lake Michaelson (3,950m) — visible from the trail above. A glacially-formed tarn in a natural amphitheatre. The reflection of the peaks in still morning conditions is a primary photograph of the Chogoria route.
Gorges Valley viewpoint — the trail traverses the lip of the valley. The drop into the gorge is dramatic. The far wall shows exposed volcanic rock. Your guide will stop here for the view and photographs.
The Temple — a 150-metre vertical cliff face near the Mintos area. It gets its name from the reaction of visitors standing at the edge. The position adopted involuntarily — leaning back, catching breath — looks, from behind, like someone praying. It is one of the most striking geological features accessible on foot on Mount Kenya.
Mintos Camp (4,200m) — your highest overnight before the summit. The camp is exposed and cold — temperatures drop to 0°C or below at this altitude. Your guide team prepares a hot dinner. Early rest is not optional. You are waking at 02:30 AM.
Summit briefing — your guide walks through the overnight push route, hydration requirements, pacing, and turnaround protocol. Ask any questions before dark.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner at camp · 🏕️ Overnight: Mintos Camp 4,200m
🌅 Day 3 — Summit Push, Point Lenana (4,985m), and Sirimon Descent to Nairobi
Wake-up: 02:00 AM · Departure: 02:30 AM
This is the day.
The pre-dawn departure serves two functions. It takes advantage of the frozen ground — terrain that becomes loose and difficult once the sun thaws it — and it positions you at the summit for the sunrise. The East African sunrise from Point Lenana, looking out over the cloud layer below with the full Indian Ocean horizon visible on a clear morning, is a specific visual experience that other climbers who came down the night before do not get.
The climb from Mintos to the summit takes 3 to 4 hours depending on pacing. Your guide sets the rhythm. Slow and steady. The altitude at this stage means every extra effort costs significantly more energy than it would at sea level.
Simba Tarn and Harris Tarn (4,450m to 4,600m) — the approach route passes these glacial tarns. At 03:00 AM they are frozen at the edges. Headtorch light reflects on the ice.
Lewis Glacier approach — the final section before the summit plateau crosses terrain that is sometimes snow-covered and sometimes exposed scree. Your guide determines the current condition and routes accordingly.
Point Lenana — 4,985m (16,355 ft) — Africa's third highest trekking peak. The summit register sits here. Sign it. The view takes in Batian and Nelion directly above you, the cloud layer far below, and on very clear mornings, Kilimanjaro visible on the southern horizon approximately 340km away.
Descent — Sirimon Route via Shipton's Camp (4,200m) → Mackinder's Valley → Old Moses Camp (3,300m).
The descent follows the glacial Mackinder's Valley — a long U-shaped corridor with the rock faces of Batian and Nelion visible above you for most of the upper descent. The moorland gives way to alpine forest. Your legs will notice the 1,685m of descent by the time you reach Old Moses.
Breakfast at Shipton's Camp — hot food and rest after the summit.
Transfer from Old Moses Gate (Sirimon side) — Wild Springs vehicle is waiting. Drive back to Nairobi, arriving late afternoon.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast at Shipton's · Packed lunch on descent · 🚐 Nairobi arrival: late afternoon

🌿 Leave No Trace — Mountain Ethics on Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We operate under strict Leave No Trace principles adapted for alpine environments.
- 🗑️ All waste exits with your team. Nothing is buried, burned, or left at camp.
- 💧 Water sources are protected. No soap, toothpaste, or cooking waste within 60 metres of any lake or stream.
- 🌿 Stay on designated trails. Off-trail movement damages fragile alpine vegetation — giant groundsel and giant lobelia grow centimetres per year.
- 🔥 No open fires above the forest line. Camp stoves only. Firewood is not collected on the mountain.
- 📢 Noise is kept minimal. The moorland and peak zones are wildlife habitats — eland, rock hyrax, and sunbirds all use the high-altitude sections.
- 🧑🤝🧑 Our porters are fairly compensated. Read our porter pay policy on Mount Kenya.
📅 Best Time to Climb - Month by Month
Mount Kenya has two dry seasons. Both are excellent for climbing.
| Month | Conditions | Summit Probability | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| January to March | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Very High | Dry, clear, cold nights — peak climbing season |
| April to May | ⭐⭐ | Lower | Long rains — trails muddy, cloud on summit |
| June | ⭐⭐⭐ | Moderate | Transition — improving through month |
| July to October | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Very High | Second dry season — excellent conditions |
| November | ⭐⭐⭐ | Moderate | Short rains beginning |
| December | ⭐⭐⭐ | Moderate | Short rains ending — improving from mid-month |
The Chogoria advantage in wet season: Chogoria is the driest approach route on the mountain. It is the preferred route for the April-May and November shoulder periods because the eastern approach receives less precipitation than the Sirimon and Naro Moru western routes.

🏔️ About Mount Kenya — Facts for Climbers
Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest mountain at 5,199m (Batian summit) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an extinct stratovolcano dating back approximately 2.5 million years. Erosion over millions of years reduced the original estimated height from around 6,500m to the current jagged peaks.
Three main summits:
Batian — 5,199m (17,057ft) · Technical rock climb · Rope and climbing experience required
Nelion — 5,188m (17,021ft) · Technical rock climb · Rope required
Point Lenana — 4,985m (16,355ft) · Trekking summit · This is your objective on this climb
Three main trekking routes:
Chogoria (south-east) — most scenic, longest, driest · Your ascent route
Sirimon (north-west) — gentler gradient, beautiful moorland · Your descent route
Naro Moru (west) — fastest, most direct, most popular · Not used on this package
🌍 Why This Combination Is the Best Short Format
Competitors offer either pure Chogoria (up and back) or pure Sirimon. The combination traverse is the most rewarding 3-day format available because:
You see both major sides of the mountain in a single trip. The Chogoria ascent delivers the alpine scenery — lakes, gorges, waterfalls. The Sirimon descent is more comfortable after a hard summit push — the gradient is gentler and the Mackinder's Valley descent is one of the most beautiful sections of the mountain.
And you only travel each trail once. No retracing steps.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I climb Mount Kenya in 3 days from Nairobi?
Yes — with the right fitness and route strategy. The 3-day Chogoria to Sirimon itinerary allows proper altitude progression while remaining time-efficient. You leave Nairobi early on Day 1, sleep at 3,400m, move to 4,200m on Day 2, and summit at 4,985m before descending on Day 3. It is achievable for fit, experienced trekkers. If you have not hiked above 3,500m before, we recommend extending to 4 or 5 days.
Is this a technical climb?
No. Point Lenana at 4,985m is a non-technical trekking summit. No ropes, crampons, or climbing equipment are required under normal conditions. The summit approach involves some scrambling on rocky terrain and may include snow or ice on the final section depending on season. Your guide assesses conditions and routes accordingly. The technical summits — Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) — require full rock climbing equipment and experience.
Why is Chogoria more expensive than other routes?
Chogoria lacks built-in accommodation facilities along the trail, so we provide fully supported camping with a larger porter and equipment team. The trailhead at Chogoria Gate is also harder to access than the Sirimon and Naro Moru gates, adding logistics cost. The extra cost delivers the most visually rewarding ascent on the mountain.
What is the summit success rate on a 3-day itinerary?
For appropriately fit and experienced climbers, the success rate is high. The main variable is acute mountain sickness — a physiological response to rapid altitude gain that cannot be fully predicted in advance. Our guides carry supplemental oxygen for emergency use and know the turnaround protocol. A climber showing serious AMS symptoms descends — no exceptions. If you are concerned about success probability, the 4-day format increases it significantly.
What temperature should I expect?
Nairobi at departure: approximately 18°C. Chogoria Gate forest: 14 to 16°C. Lake Ellis (3,400m) overnight: 5 to 10°C. Mintos Camp (4,200m) overnight: -3 to 0°C. Point Lenana pre-dawn: -5 to -10°C depending on season. A proper sleeping bag rated to at least -5°C and thermal layers are essential. This is not a warm-weather hike.
Is gear rental available?
Yes. Sleeping bags and some personal equipment are available for rental. Advise us at booking what you need and we confirm availability and cost. We strongly recommend wearing your own broken-in boots — do not wear new footwear on this climb.
How do I book?
WhatsApp +254 729 257 317 with your preferred dates, group size, and any gear rental requirements. We confirm guide and porter availability within 24 hours, send a full pre-climb briefing document, and collect a 30% deposit to secure your team.
