Catching Trout Within 5km of the Equator โ€” Africa's Most Unusual Fly Fishing Destination

There is a moment on the Ntirimiti access road โ€” the only way in โ€” when even the Defender starts to feel the gradient. You have left the comfortable transfer vehicle behind in Nanyuki. You are climbing Mount Kenya's northeastern flank on a track that most vehicles cannot follow. Then the road ends completely. The Rutundu staff take your gear, and you walk fifteen minutes through the Kizito Gorge to emerge at the edge of a volcanic crater lake at 3,078 metres above sea level, where the water is cold, clear, and full of rainbow trout.

This is Lake Rutundu โ€” one of the finest fly fishing lake destinations in East Africa, sitting on the northeastern slopes of Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Africa's second-highest mountain. You can catch rainbow trout here within 5km of the equator. That sentence does not happen anywhere else on Earth.

Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton at Rutundu Log Cabins in October 2010. His entry is in the cabin guest book. We mention it not as a gimmick, but because it explains something true about this place โ€” it is the kind of destination that makes people want to mark a permanent moment. The lake, the silence, the peaks above, the trout in the water, the log fire in the cedar cabin at night. You will understand when you arrive.

Wild Springs Adventures brings mountain expertise and complete logistics management to an experience most Nairobi operators cannot properly execute. We handle both vehicles, all park fees, fishing licences, and the mountain guide for the Lake Alice hike. One company, the entire journey.

The Four Fishing Waters of the Mount Kenya Fly Fishing Safari

Lake Rutundu (3,078m) โ€” The Main Event

A self-contained volcanic crater lake covering 0.4 square kilometres on the northeastern face of Mount Kenya. The spring water at Rutundu is safe to drink directly from the tap. The lake holds a self-sustaining rainbow trout population with the musculature and deep colouring of fish that have genuinely had to work for their size in cold, UV-intense, oxygen-rich equatorial highland water.

Average catch: 2 to 3 lbs ยท Exceptional fish: 6 to 10 lbs ยท Equipment provided: Rowing boat and 3 casting platforms ยท Previous fishing experience: Not required โ€” though serious fly anglers will find the clear-water sight fishing a genuine technical challenge.

The boat at Rutundu is the key advantage over Lake Alice โ€” steep banks make shore casting difficult on the deeper sections, and working the lake from the boat at dawn is the most productive approach. Lake Rutundu also holds the odd brown trout alongside the dominant rainbow population.

Lake Alice (3,550m) โ€” Africa's High-Altitude Fly Fishing Secret

Among the highest fishing destinations accessible on foot anywhere in Africa. Lake Alice holds fewer fish than Rutundu but larger ones โ€” records above 12 lbs have been documented at this lake. The casting at Lake Alice is of a different character from Rutundu: the shallow northwestern edge of the lake offers the finest sight fishing in the Kenya highland circuit, using dry flies on crystal clear water where you can see the fish before you cast to them. The deeper eastern sections reward a stripped streamer โ€” a Viva or leech pattern worked through the deep water regularly produces the biggest fish of the day.

Park line fee: KES 1,550 per line per day โ€” paid at the national park boundary on the hike up ยท Hike from Rutundu: 6km โ€” 1.5 to 2 hours ascending, approximately 1 hour descending ยท KWS ranger accompaniment: Required and arranged by Wild Springs โ€” included in Options B and C.

Kizito/Kathita River Gorge โ€” Wild Technical Stream Fishing

The Kizito River runs immediately beside the Rutundu cabins and through the gorge you crossed on arrival. It holds smaller brown trout in tight technical runs โ€” this is the water for anglers who prefer reading moving water over still-lake fishing. The gorge is enclosed, with branches and bushes pressing close to the banks. Small weighted nymphs in black and roll casts are the technique, or the true technical challenge of the bow-and-arrow cast in the tightest runs. No boat, no platform, just a river and a fly rod and the sound of water echoing off the gorge walls.

The Nithi River โ€” Advanced Day Extension

For serious fly anglers who want a fourth water, the Nithi River on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kenya is accessible via a day's drive to the Chogoria Gate. The Nithi holds exclusively wild brown trout โ€” not stocked, genuinely wild fish โ€” and is one of the finest wild brown trout rivers in East Africa. Open banks, easy wading, and trout that respond to Adams and Tungsten Hare's Ear fished in the current. Zebra, buffalo, and eland watch from the moorland as you fish. Ask Wild Springs to add a Nithi River day to your itinerary on request.

The Logistics - How This Journey Actually Works

Rutundu logistics are real, specific, and non-negotiable. Understanding them before you book means you arrive prepared.

Leg 1 โ€” Nairobi to Nanyuki (Comfortable Transfer Vehicle)

Your journey begins in Nairobi in a comfortable transfer vehicle appropriate for the A2 highway. The standard route runs through Nyeri and Nanyuki โ€” approximately 3.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic. This vehicle does not go up the mountain. Attempting the full journey in a standard SUV is a false economy that frequently results in a stuck vehicle at altitude with no recovery option.

The transfer vehicle parks in Nanyuki or the Sirimon Gate area. Luggage transfers to the Defender.

Air alternative: For international visitors or those with limited time, Air Kenya operates scheduled flights from Wilson Airport, Nairobi to Nanyuki airstrip โ€” approximately 45 minutes. Charter flights to the Kisima area can be arranged on request. Contact Wild Springs to include flight logistics in your package.

๐Ÿ’ก Sharing the Nairobi transfer across a group of 4 to 6 substantially reduces the per-person cost. Solo travelers and pairs pay the most per head for this leg.

Leg 2 โ€” Kisima to Lake Rutundu via the Defender

The access road begins in the Kisima area, in the Ntirimiti locality on the northeastern slopes of Mount Kenya โ€” the Kenya School of Adventure and Leadership (KESAL) is the landmark reference point near the access area, 9km off the Nanyuki-Meru road. The Ntirimiti entrance is not an official KWS gate โ€” it is the only functional access road to the Rutundu cabins, and it requires a proper Defender or equivalent heavy-duty 4ร—4. Nothing else consistently makes this road.

The Defender covers approximately 1.5 hours of progressively challenging mountain track. As the track climbs, the road narrows, the gradient steepens, and the views of Laikipia and the northern frontier open behind you. The road ends definitively at the Kizito Gorge.

The Rutundu staff will meet you at the gorge. Your luggage transfers to the cabins. You walk 15 minutes through the gorge to reach the lake. That walk is the transition.

Defender cost note: The Defender operates at $150 per day from Kisima. For a 2-day / 1-night trip, the Defender cost is $300 whole group. For a day trip, it is $150. This is a fixed cost per vehicle โ€” larger groups share it more efficiently.

Helicopter alternative: River Valley House near Nanyuki offers helicopter access to Lake Rutundu, Lake Alice, and Lake Michaelson. This is a genuine option for guests who prioritise access speed over the overland experience. Wild Springs offers the ground route, which delivers more of the mountain.

Leg 3 โ€” Lake Alice (The Hike from Rutundu)

Lake Alice sits at 3,550m, 6km from Rutundu Log Cabins via a hiking trail across open moorland and through giant groundsel and lobelia forest. The hike takes 1.5 to 2 hours ascending and approximately 1 hour descending. It requires a KWS line fee (KES 1,550 per line per day) paid at the national park boundary, and a Wild Springs mountain guide accompaniment throughout.

A KWS ranger accompanies all Lake Alice visits โ€” this is a KWS requirement and is arranged by Wild Springs. The ranger accompaniment is included in the Options B and C packages.

At 3,550m, altitude effects at Lake Alice are real even for guests acclimatised to Rutundu's 3,078m. The Wild Springs guide on this hike is mountain-trained โ€” not a fishing guide hired for the day.

The Fish โ€” Rainbow Trout at Altitude on the Equator

The rainbow trout of Lake Rutundu are not from a hatchery truck. They are a self-sustaining population adapted over generations to the cold, UV-intense, oxygen-rich conditions of equatorial high altitude โ€” deeply coloured, strongly built, and frequently larger than trout found at similar altitudes elsewhere in East Africa.

Not many people in the world can say they have caught a trout within 5km of the equator. At Lake Rutundu and Lake Alice on Mount Kenya, you can.

Recommended Fly Patterns

These patterns are calibrated to Lake Rutundu and Lake Alice's specific water chemistry, insect life, and altitude conditions. Kenya Bug and Mrs. Simpson are locally developed patterns available at the Wild Springs Outdoor Store.

What Our Guests Say

โญโญโญโญโญ "The Most Atmospheric Fly Fishing I Have Done Anywhere."

I have fished Scotland, New Zealand, and Montana. Lake Rutundu at dawn โ€” mist on the water, Mount Kenya's peaks above in silhouette, the Malachite Sunbirds starting to move at the cabin veranda โ€” is the finest early morning fishing environment I have experienced. The trout on the boat session in the first two hours were extraordinary. Wild Springs handled every logistic without a single problem from first WhatsApp to the drop-off in Nairobi. This is a properly run safari operation.- Verified International Angler, Scotland ยท TripAdvisor โœ…

โญโญโญโญโญ "Lake Alice Sight Fishing Was the Technical Challenge I Needed"

We did both the Rutundu boat sessions and the Lake Alice day hike. The Rutundu dawn session was extraordinary โ€” but Lake Alice was the fishing of the trip. Crystal clear water, fish visible in the shallows, sight casting to them on the surface in the shadow of Mount Kenya's peaks. Wild Springs arranged the KWS ranger, the licence, and the guide without any effort on our side. Perfectly executed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are two vehicles required for the Lake Rutundu safari?

The Ntirimiti/Kisima access road to Rutundu requires a Land Rover Defender or equivalent. Standard minibuses and SUVs regularly fail on this track in wet conditions. The comfortable Nairobi transfer vehicle covers the paved highway efficiently and economically. The Defender covers the mountain section safely and reliably. Attempting the full journey in one standard vehicle frequently results in a breakdown at altitude with no recovery option. Wild Springs operates both vehicles as a managed package โ€” no coordination is required from your side.

Can I drive my own vehicle to Lake Rutundu?

If you own a proper Defender or equivalent expedition 4ร—4 in good condition, yes โ€” with significant caveats. The track is harsh, altitude accelerates mechanical stress, and recovery in the event of a breakdown is a serious logistical problem at these altitudes. Wild Springs strongly recommends using the dedicated Defender from Kisima. We have a working relationship with the Kisima Defender operator precisely because reliability on this road is non-negotiable.

Is fly fishing experience required?

No previous experience is required. The Rutundu Log Cabins team assists beginners on the boat, and the fish at Rutundu respond readily to well-presented flies even from novice casters. Serious fly anglers will find Lake Alice's sight fishing โ€” dry flies to visible fish in crystal clear water โ€” a proper technical challenge. Wild Springs can gear the experience toward the novice or the expert in the same group.

How far is the hike to Lake Alice?

6 kilometres from Rutundu Log Cabins, crossing open moorland and giant groundsel forest. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours ascending and approximately 1 hour descending. The altitude at Lake Alice is 3,550m โ€” notable even for guests acclimatised to Rutundu's 3,078m. A Wild Springs KWS-certified mountain guide accompanies all Lake Alice hikes. A KWS ranger accompaniment is required at the lake and is arranged by Wild Springs.

Is this experience suitable for non-anglers in the group?

Absolutely. The Rutundu experience rewards non-anglers as much as fishing rewards anglers. The birdwatching is exceptional. The walks around the lake and gorge are beautiful at any pace. The Lake Alice hike is a rewarding mountain experience regardless of fishing. The cabin environment โ€” log fire, mountain air, no signal, the lake outside the window โ€” is genuinely restorative for people with no interest in fishing whatsoever.

Can I combine this with a Mount Kenya summit climb?

Yes. Wild Springs guides all major Mount Kenya trekking routes โ€” Sirimon, Chogoria, Naro Moru, and the Kamweti Route. A Rutundu fishing expedition followed by a summit attempt via the Sirimon route is a genuinely extraordinary 6 to 7 day itinerary. Contact us to design it.

Is the Prince William proposal story accurate?

Yes. Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton at Rutundu Log Cabins in October 2010 during a private safari on Mount Kenya's northern slopes. His entry is in the cabin guest book. We mention it because it captures something true about what kind of place Rutundu is โ€” not as a marketing hook.

What do I provision for the cabin stay?

Everything. Rutundu is self-catering. The cabin has a gas oven and hob, an outdoor fridge with no freezer, and all crockery and cutlery. The spring tap water at Rutundu is safe to drink directly. Provision your Nanyuki stop carefully โ€” Wild Springs provides a detailed provisions list on booking. Recommended essentials: pre-cooked proteins, pasta, rice, eggs, good coffee, warm drinks, wine for the fire, and high-energy snacks for fishing sessions. Do not forget fire starters.

How do I book?

WhatsApp us at +254 729 257 317 or email [email protected] with your preferred option (A, B, or C), dates, group size, and whether you are staying in the log cabin or camping. We confirm availability and send a full personalised quote within 2 hours. A 30% deposit confirms your booking. Fishing permits are arranged from Nanyuki on the day โ€” no advance action required from your side.

The team at Rutundu โ€” Peter Kandie, Cosmas Cheseram, Jackson Sirma, James Chepkonga, and others โ€” maintain the cabins, manage the gorge logistics, and ensure the lake stays productive. When you tip generously, you are directly supporting the people who hold this place together.
