πΏ Kenya's Two Great Highland Parks in One Journey
They are 80 kilometres apart β separated by the Central Highlands farmland and the Nyeri-Naro Moru road β but they occupy completely different ecological universes. Aberdare National Park is a forest park: mist, cedar canopy, bamboo jungle, ancient volcanic moorland, and the lodges on stilts above waterholes where elephants arrive at dusk. Mount Kenya National Park is the mountain park: Africa's second-highest peak, glaciers that are retreating decade by decade, tarns at 4,500m, Afro-alpine vegetation that looks like no other landscape on earth, and a summit β Point Lenana at 4,985m β that is the highest point reachable without technical climbing on the continent.
Most operators offer them separately. Wild Springs offers them as one journey, because they are geographically and logically connected β and because the Aberdare experience is the finest acclimatisation and preparation for a Mount Kenya summit attempt available within the same country.
The sequence is deliberate:
Days 1β2 in the Aberdares: Waterfalls, tree lodge overnight, forest game drive. The body arrives at altitude gradually β the Aberdare safari operates at 2,000β3,000m. The Treetops or Ark overnight at 2,000m is a gentle introduction to highland altitude.
Days 3β4 at Mount Kenya: The approach to Sirimon or Naro Moru Gate at 2,500m, the hike to camp at 3,300m, the summit push to Point Lenana at 4,985m, and descent.
You see the two most important highland ecosystems in East Africa. You experience a genuine high-altitude summit. You return to Nairobi with the full sequence of what Kenya's central highlands contain.

06:00 Β· Dawn Game Drive β Aberdare Salient Final waterhole visit. Colobus monkeys in the morning light. Bongo in the bamboo margins. Game drives in the Aberdare Salient produce some of the finest forest wildlife encounters in Kenya.
10:00 Β· Checkout Β· Drive to Mount Kenya The drive from Aberdare to the Mount Kenya access points (Sirimon Gate or Naro Moru Gate) takes 2β3 hours through Nyeri and Naro Moru / Timau. The mountain reveals itself above the clouds as the road approaches β if the sky is clear. Africa's second-highest mountain. You are going up there tomorrow.
Afternoon Β· Mount Kenya arrival Β· Naro Moru or Sirimon area Check in at the base camp or support hotel. Briefing from the mountain guide. Equipment check. Final gear preparation.
Overnight: Naro Moru River Lodge, Sirimon bandas, or similar β half board
βΊ Day 3 Β· Mount Kenya Ascent β Gate to First High Camp

The porters carry the camping loads. The guide briefs the group on pace and altitude management. The first day on Mount Kenya is through montane forest and bamboo β the same vegetation zones as the Aberdare traverse, at the same altitude, but on a different mountain.
By afternoon: above the bamboo. The Afro-alpine moorland of Mount Kenya in its upper reaches is a different world β Giant Groundsel trees (Dendrosenecio keniodendron) standing like something from a prehistoric landscape, Giant Lobelia (Lobelia telekii) spiking from the moorland floor, and Mount Kenya's twin glaciated peaks β Batian and Nelion β visible above on clear evenings.
Overnight: Judmaier Camp or Meteorological Station β camping (tent, sleeping bag, mat provided)
ποΈ Day 4 Β· Summit Push β Point Lenana (4,985m) Β· Descent
02:00 Β· Pre-Dawn Summit Departure The summit push to Point Lenana begins at 02:00 to reach the summit by sunrise. The final approach is rocky, cold, and thin-air β 4,500m to 4,985m across scree, glacial moraine, and the Lewis Glacier approach. Trekking poles and headlamps essential.
06:00 Β· ποΈ Point Lenana Summit Β· 4,985m Africa's second-highest mountain's accessible summit. Glaciers visible above. The Indian Ocean is visible on a clear morning to the east. The Rift Valley to the west. Mount Kilimanjaro's outline on the clearest days to the south. The full sweep of the Kenyan highlands β including the Aberdare Range, visible as a dark ridge to the southwest, the range the group walked through two days ago β in one frame.
This is what the combo produces. You stand on Point Lenana, and you can see the Aberdares.
07:30 Β· Descent Begins Down from the summit via the same route, or via the alternate descent path to the camp. Collect gear. Continue descent to the gate by afternoon.
15:00 Β· Gate Arrival Β· Drive to Nairobi, Nairobi by evening or overnight near Naro Moru if the descent is late.
Overnight (if extended): Naro Moru River Lodge or Nairobi hotel
π Day 5 Β· Return to Nairobi (or Extended Programme)
Drive from the mountain base to Nairobi. Approximately 2β2.5 hours. Drop-offs at CBD, Westlands, or JKIA.
